tricked into FireFox 3

I clicked on update Malwarebyte.. I looked at it & FireFox 3 had downloaded & wanted to know if I wanted to reboot to install it. I DIDN'T click on FF. So now when I reboot I will get FF 3. I know sooner or later I have to get it but wanted to do it when I am ready. Now that I am having to get it now what should I know about installing it?

It also froze my Malwarebyte updates as it stopped moving. What should I do about it? If I cancel it will that mess up my updates. Guess I have no other choice. Seems like every time I think my computer is in good shapes something else happens. :(

Seems like Firefox 3 is already installed, it simply needs you to reboot to replace a few registry keys from FF2 with the newer ones. Been running FF3 with no ill effects for a long time now.

Once you reboot try updating Malwarebytes again, sometimes I need to try twice but only with Malwarebytes. No big deal.

It seems FF3 installed without my OK.. I hope my firewall doesn't cause a problem. I guess I have no but to install it.. I think I will lose the dictionary.. gotta figure out how to get that back..
I'm fixing to leave for about 3 of hours & will do it when I return.. wish me luck..

I appreciate the information and suggestions. I never had the View Point media player, to my knowledge, but the Add-on was in FF, sure enough, though now disabled. I have been having all kinds of trouble, Spyware Doctor and DoubleAntiVirus installing but giving the message that they failed to initialize...well, I won't bore you with it all. I decided that Ravencajun was right, and I needed help from a specialized forum, so I posted on LandsDown, which I think Zep recommended to someone else here. Today, I discovered that something (not me!) had changed the location for my downloads in FF to "Downloads," though I had it set up to download to the desktop. Ulp! Zep: Googling trojan Hiloti was one of the first things I did after Spyware Doctor discovered it in my computer. SD said you had to pay if you wanted to remove the infected files, so I did, but no matter what I did after that, I couldn't even get it to scan again, and the registration number they emailed me, while it sufficed to register for an account at their site, was consistently refused when I tried to register the software. So far, PCTools has not replied to my emails about SD, but perhaps I haven't given them enough time. Very disappointed. The SD icon in the systray also caused TrendMicro Internet Security to hang and the mouse to freeze, so I removed it from startup, but it came back later. So, thumbs down from me to Spyware Doctor. I hope they return my money!

Try this: Type about:config in the address bar. Then, if needed click the "IÂll be careful, I promise!" button. Next, in the filter box Â type in: tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent Right-click that about:config entry, and select "Toggle" This will convert Firefox back to loading opening a new tab from a web page on the far right of the tab bar, rather than right next to the tab you opened it from. When I have uninstalled firefox before installing a newer version the bookmarks, history, etc. have stayed in the Mozilla folder. To be double safe you can export your bookmarks (bookmarks > organize bookmarks > import and backup) to a file in your My Documents folder before uninstalling. That way you can delete the folder after uninstalling if you need to do so to install an older version.

think I'd start with a ccleaner and check mark compact data base.... then by lookin at extensions/plugins/themes, start disabling/re-enabling something all three have in common. probably lots of same slow page loads.... Yes Dar, my Firefox installed without any encouragement from me. Not sure I like that but so far I have been too lazy to find the option to change it.

However I just checked so if you wish to regain control you can do this.......
Open Firefox
click Tools
click Options
click Update and set the check marks to your personal preference.

a note here about malwarebytes their site is having major problems today, it seems they are experiencing down time, as are several other help forums, it is possibly being hit with DDos attacks. If you are not able to connect today wait and try later.

Looks like I was wrong about FF.. it installed the final update for FF 2.

What is this?
Also, the Phishing Protection service will no longer be available for Firefox 2 users. Firefox 3 offers a free Phishing and Malware Protection service, which will continue to protect you from online scams and attacks.
Do I want FF Phishing and Malware Protection service? Maybe I don't have a choice. I have malware protection but don't know what Phishing is.

In the next few days guess I'll have to go ahead & get FF3..

the phishing service was on FF2 but has just recently been removed, there is this type of protection on FF3.

Yes support is ending for FF2 they are urging the move to FF3 now.

As to why here is their quote:
"[Director of firefox Mike] Beltzner said Google asked Mozilla to disable the feature in firefox 2.0.0.19 because the older browser line uses an obsolete protocol.

"The phishing Protection feature in firefox 2 relies on data provided by Google via the first version of the SafeBrowsing protocol," said Beltzner, who explained that Google and Mozilla had worked together to update the protocol, first to SafeBrowsing v2.1 late last year, and more recently, to SafeBrowsing v2.2.

firefox 3.0 has relied on SafeBrowsing v2.1 since its release several months ago, but is transitioning to v2.2 this month for its antiphishing and anti-malware features, both which ping Google's servers for blacklists.

"Now that firefox 2 is reaching the end of its support life span, we have been asked to turn this feature off as Google will no longer be supporting requests using the obsolete SafeBrowsing v1 protocol," said Beltzner.

Users who download firefox 2.0.0.19, or update to that version later this month, will be told that the feature has been switched off, Beltzner said."
