Anyone having trouble installing FireFox 6?

I went to the Mozilla site to download it (to my surprise, it was an ftp URL that ended in .jp, but I assumed it was OK, being on Mozilla). Twice I downloaded it and presumably it was installed, but Help>about Mozilla FireFox still says it is version 3.5.7, even though I closed and restarted the browser.

Earlier today, it brought up a page about how now you can personalize the browser, which I am not interested in, but I found that everything on my Add-on "Inform Enter" list had been deleted. Then this evening, when I opened FF, I got a box with the message that the Plug-in MetaStream 3.2.2.26 was dangerous and I should close FF to get rid of it. I don't know what this plug-in is, and I am wondering how and when and why it got into my computer.

Can it be something to do with the Trojan Hiloti, which infected my PC recently? I am still scanning often with various software, hoping to completely eradicate it.

I don't know what you got but the install file for 3.6 is an exe this is the download page here. I think I would remove what ever you have from add remove and then get this 3.6 setup.exe and run it.
it should be ok to remove that plug in from what I have seen it may belong to View Point media player, have you had that on your pc?
you always want to make sure you are getting the correct version for your opearting system, windows and not linux for example, and your language English(US) the exe I have linked to is the Windows English exe.

However 3.5 will still be supported for a while so if you rather go with it you can do that, but I would also reinstall it.

I had the same pop up about MetaStream 3.2.2.26 causing problems with Firefox this morning and it appears that Firefox just disabled it. I thought that version 3.5.7 was the newest.

Although this question is about red mulch - we feel the need to express our experience with red treated cedar wood, just in case they are similar. We had an unused red wood treated unused swing set in our back yard for at least 6 years that we should have torn down. The wood had fallen apart and all, but we just kept up - not thinking it would impact anything. I noticed recently the changing color of the blades of grass (red splotches) around the playset area - that we believe is due to leaking from the old set. Prior to noticing this grass discoloration we had a tree (10 feet away) die that had brown blotches on its leaves. Also prior to noticing the grass members of our family have had bloody noses, light sensitivity, migraines, runny noses, ringing in the ears, rapid heart beat, & muscle spasms (of and on). Initially, we had the house tested for mold - which returned normal. The investigator described it as an “air quality” issue. I begin to take the swing set down - just in case it was causing our challenges (w/out gloves) & only the rapid heartbeat returned - conforming to me that we might have identified the root cause. We are preparing to call & request for soil testing. Even though a swing set has much more wood & ours had much more time exposed to the environment then typical mulch - we wanted to post just in case someone searched this topic as we did to learn of others experiences. If you have concerns, search for soil testing in your area. Ours will be done by the local university and is free.

The only suggestion I can make is to uninstall the program and upgrade, do a search on your computer for PE Design and delete those folders, shut down your computer, restart, do a search for the program folders and directories again to make sure they are completely gone, and reinstall the program using the disks you received when you bought the program, install the upgrade, and then look at the Brother download site for any fixes, especially if you have service pack 2 on your computer which will do strange things to some programs and accessories such as reader/writer boxes, printers, and cameras. When you reinstall, make sure your virus protection and firewall are off. Also go into control panel and fonts and see if your embroidery fonts installed there. After everything is installed and working correctly, move any designs on the hard drive to cd or disk and keep them there so you have more memory to work with PE design in the future and no risk of losing designs again. You can categorize designs by type on a cd for each design type, flowers, fonts, animals as an example, and then print the design out and keep the notebook categorized by that cd type, --we did this for years for word processing in business numerically or my person's name so we could find files quickly. When you download purchased and free designs, there are "terms of use" written somewhere on the sites or on the purchased card. The copyright issue has caused more than one person on Garden Web, other sewing sites, and E-Bay a lot of grief, time and money...just a friendly, concerned caution so you don't end up a victim. With sewing/embroidery machines, there is a warranty issue. A notebook of designs is a good idea as well as renaming designs that have a descriptive meaning to you. Once you get your PE design going, you should have the ability to bring the design up and then print it along with the color definitions if included. Some free designs have a .jpg file included along with the color changes that makes it easy to print out.

The problem is now solved. Two people at the Computer forum suggested CrapCleaner, so I got that because it really looks useful, but the problem was only with Firefox. Something had gotten corrupted. I finally fixed it--after trying a lot of other things--by deleting the whole Mozilla folder from my Documents & Settings>[user name]>Applications folder. That contains your FireFox profile, Bookmarks and Scrapbook add-on, etc., so I backed those up to a CD prior to the deletion. Everything is now back to normal. If anyone else has a similar problem, I have described the solution in more detail in the thread I started on the Computer forum. Thanks for telling me about it. I can see I am going to become a regular there, too!

Tim, I don't know if this will help, but someone posted a lengthy set of instructions on another forum on to get rid of the ads (see link - scroll to the end). I run Firefox myself, so I've not seen the pop-ups (here or anywhere else) for some time. However, I also paid for a year without them right before that option disappeared, so I may just be on borrowed time. I've also emailed many companies to tell them how obnoxious their internet ads are and that they've lost a customer. I have no idea if they care one bit, but it does make me feel better! Nope 3.6 is the current version which was released 1/22. If there are some problems downloading from Mozilla you can get it from the mirror site below.

When going from Firefox 3.0.17 to 3.6, should I completely uninstall the old version first or can I just install 3.6 over the old one?

Hiloti is a Trojan which downloads to the affected computer the adware detected as Lop.

Additionally, when users access through the Firefox browser certain websites related to search engines, they are redirected to malicious websites from which more malware will be downloaded.

On Windows Server 2008/Vista computers, it reduces the protection level of the computer, as it modifies the level of the Mandatory Integrity Control (MIC), leaving it low.

Hiloti does not spread automatically using its own means. It needs an attacking user's intervention in order to reach the affected computer.

You may consider having a more thorough check done at a Malware forum.

Be careful if you decide to Google Trojan Hiloti, most links are labled malicious. A good way to get in trouble.

I appreciate the information and suggestions. I never had the View Point media player, to my knowledge, but the Add-on was in FF, sure enough, though now disabled. I have been having all kinds of trouble, Spyware Doctor and DoubleAntiVirus installing but giving the message that they failed to initialize...well, I won't bore you with it all. I decided that Ravencajun was right, and I needed help from a specialized forum, so I posted on LandsDown, which I think Zep recommended to someone else here.

Today, I discovered that something (not me!) had changed the location for my downloads in FF to "Downloads," though I had it set up to download to the desktop.

Ulp! Zep: Googling trojan Hiloti was one of the first things I did after Spyware Doctor discovered it in my computer. SD said you had to pay if you wanted to remove the infected files, so I did, but no matter what I did after that, I couldn't even get it to scan again, and the registration number they emailed me, while it sufficed to register for an account at their site, was consistently refused when I tried to register the software.

So far, PCTools has not replied to my emails about SD, but perhaps I haven't given them enough time. Very disappointed. The SD icon in the systray also caused TrendMicro Internet Security to hang and the mouse to freeze, so I removed it from startup, but it came back later. So, thumbs down from me to Spyware Doctor. I hope they return my money!

Don't spend money on things you see advertised when there are so many good, reliable security programs available for free and recommended over and over on this forum. Once you get things cleaned up, follow suggestions from Raven and Zep and others here who are very knowledgeable. Hope you are succesful in getting a refund on SD.
