Another FireFox Question

Hi!

I was directed here from one of the other GW forums I frequent.

I downloaded FF this weekend. It's a highly recommended program, plus I recently became a Moderator for our local Freecycle, and FF has an add-on to make our job easier.

However, my computer has slowed to a crawl. Nothing opens quickly, whether it's my shortcuts or a link inside a site, even my email. Horribly, frustratingly slow. (Cable internet)

I have over 50% memory, and the CPU is anywhere from 14-32%, with 3 windows open currently.

Does anyone have any ideas what happened?

I had some problems with the latest FF and went back to a previous edition. Maybe this thread will help:

Btw, make sure to install the FF add-on called "AdBlock Plus" (via toolbar: Tools, Add-on's...

you will have to do that anyway because they are not supporting version 2. So might as well go ahead and do it. It should be a smooth transition, there are several threads here that I have posted links to some tips and tricks for firefox 3 where you can make it more like version 2 etc so just search for those. some of your add ons or themes may not yet be functional with version 3 is maybe something you may run into.

there is another thread here now that has some good discussion about firefox, at the bottom of that thread I have posted a link to tutorials on firefox. Firefox does the same thing your Internet Explorer does but is much more customizable and is safer, you will not get rid of IE you will just add firefox so you have a choice between the two, both can be run at the same time. here is the link to that thread Here is a link that might be useful: thread

My husband and I use FireFox all the time, but for the rare occasions when some site won't work (a video, for instance) in FF, we just right-click and choose 'View this page in IE," so we don't have to have two browsers open all the time. This function I mentioned is thanks to the FF add-on called IE View. There is a smaller add-on called IE View Lite, by another programmer, but that wouldn't work right for me, so I went back to the original IE View. I had a hard time finding the download for it, though. Using Search kept bringing up IE View Lite. The original is on p.3 or later of the results, so in case you need it, here is a link. Pam: Ah, if only it were! *History* I get by clicking on the cat icon with the clock, and the history menu drops down on the *left* side of the screen. You can see where this one is, and I get this menu by clicking on the thing like double parentheses next to the star in the address window. Besides, as I said, I have had History turned off for a long time and that side bar is empty. The items in this menu happen to be mostly things I have only visited once or twice and are by no means representative of my browsing history. If they were, it might be of some use. Owbist: Thanks. I wasn't looking for speed or accessibility. I just don't like having something whose method of working and management I don't know. It bothers me! It even bothers me that I don't know its name, so I am hampered in looking for a solution. Linesman: Your message just came in. That seemed to do the trick, and I was thinking Yippee! But, alas, the sites didn't stay deleted. They disappeared when I highlighted them and clicked Delete, but the minute I clicked on the "parentheses" mark that brings up that menu, there they all were again. Closing and reopening FF didn't make a speck of difference. I have found that clicking on the star in the URL window adds a new site. So half of the mystery is solved, but the half that most interests me is the deleting part! LOL I think I'm going to have to uninstall and reinstall FF, but even that may not help.

the first thing to check when you encounter a slow down is that it is not one of your add-ons that is causing it, go through and turn off the add-ons and then test to see if it is better if so you know it was an add-on, go through and turn those on one at a time testing so you can tell which one is the culprit.

Also try an uninstall then re-install of firefox itself you could have got a bad install

if all else fails you can try getting the earlier version of firefox, the latest one from the firefox page is 3, you could go back to the latest version of 2.

Hi Raven,
I downloaded 2.0, then I read your post. It's faster,than the 3.0 (but ANYTHING is faster than that was) but not as fast as my IE was which is unusual, according to the person who directed me here (hi sue_va). I only have 2 add-ons; a Yahoo toolbar and a FreeCycle (I'm a moderator, and was advised to download FF)

I'm going to uninstall and re-install 3.0 and see if that fixes it.

one of the problems I have read about did involve having a yahoo toolbar on ff version 3 and it was that it caused major slow downs, so that could possibly be part of it.

Hi, Sherry.

Did you check out the link that Homebound gave? It mentions the problem with Yahoo Toolbar. I chose not to take it, or FFv3.

I have v 2.0.0.16. I never get the newest of anything until I see what others have to say about it!

I am getting education here about the FF add-ons. I added the Flashblock on jane's recommendation and instantly noticed my computer running faster. the big test was on loading pages on the Cooking Forum & Decorating Forum where there are alot of pics.
raven - thanks for the hint to disable all the add-ons to determine which one is affecting the speed. I have DOM Inspector as an add- on. Any experience with this? I don't remember why I added this. do I need this?
I use FF 2.0.0.16 on a Mac PowerPC G4 ( not duel /windows). BTW - FF is so much better then Safari.

this is what it says about dom inspector on the firefox site:
DOM Inspector is a tool that can be used to inspect and edit the live DOM of any web document or XUL application. The DOM hierarchy can be navigated using a two-paned window that allows for a variety of different views on the document and all nodes within.

Note: This add-on depends on binary changes to Firefox, and will not work with Firefox 2.

I do not have it, never used it, so can not comment on it, if you do not use it then you can easily remove it.

In fact I see you have ff 2 and it says that dom inspector does not work with ff 2???

There is a post some pages back that I had started called tips and tricks that thread has a lot of good info on ff ad ons and other useful stuff.

Thanks raven - I see the thread- I have some reading to do. I read what it said about DOM - I honestly have no clue why I have it - I only have a few add-ons , as I am not one to randomly add something unless it is highly recommended. I will get rid of it.
