I have read where lots of people have fire fox and seem to be very happy with it. I would like to know what it does.

If you want one that is even lighter than firefox try seamonkey.

Bookmarks and Scrapbook are different. I can back up Bookmarks easily following the path I gave in my first post. There is a file for Bookmarks inside the next stop after Profiles, which is v20fqq3t.default. I forgot to mention that last one. There is also a folder for Scrapbook inside v20fqq3t.default, but that folder contains a number of files, including "Backup" and several RDF files that appear to be individual backups but are just a meaningless list of figures when I click them, as well as a folder for "Data." "Backup" itself is also full of lines like the following: RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:scrapbook:item20060912103442" NS8:id="20060912103442" NS8:type="" NS8:title="Scappy String Quilt Instructions" NS8:chars="UTF-8" NS8:comment="" NS8:icon="" NS8:source="http://home.pmt.org/~awalter/string.html"/ So I don't see how saving Backup would give me something to use in the event of a crash. Groan. Come to think of it, Roxio appears to insist on individual files rather than folders when I want to burn a disk, so maybe I'll have to export everything to the desktop and then laboriously transfer it to Roxio as a "project" and burn that. What gets me is that previously--maybe a long time ago--there was just one folder that I could transfer to a zip disk and from it open up FF again with all the scrapbook entries. Somewhere along the line that changed. I do find Scrapbook very useful because any Web page saved there is always there, along with its clickable links, even if the original page has been taken down.

I appreciate the information and suggestions. I never had the View Point media player, to my knowledge, but the Add-on was in FF, sure enough, though now disabled. I have been having all kinds of trouble, Spyware Doctor and DoubleAntiVirus installing but giving the message that they failed to initialize...well, I won't bore you with it all. I decided that Ravencajun was right, and I needed help from a specialized forum, so I posted on LandsDown, which I think Zep recommended to someone else here. Today, I discovered that something (not me!) had changed the location for my downloads in FF to "Downloads," though I had it set up to download to the desktop. Ulp! Zep: Googling trojan Hiloti was one of the first things I did after Spyware Doctor discovered it in my computer. SD said you had to pay if you wanted to remove the infected files, so I did, but no matter what I did after that, I couldn't even get it to scan again, and the registration number they emailed me, while it sufficed to register for an account at their site, was consistently refused when I tried to register the software. So far, PCTools has not replied to my emails about SD, but perhaps I haven't given them enough time. Very disappointed. The SD icon in the systray also caused TrendMicro Internet Security to hang and the mouse to freeze, so I removed it from startup, but it came back later. So, thumbs down from me to Spyware Doctor. I hope they return my money!

Ah, it just occurred to me that earlier today, because a folder I had had on my bookmarks toolbar had disappeared (and doesn't seem to have been misplaced somewhere else under another name, as happened once or twice before, my fault), I tried to restore my FF profile from Mozy. Being timid about it, though, I tried to save it to the desktop and have not put the files into my FF folder under Applications, etc. Nevertheless, it is not on the desktop, so it may have gone into my FF folder. If I delete my "profile," would that solve matters? But it would be a disaster for me if I should lose all my bookmarks.

I had megga troubles with IE on my Win 7 computer all of last week. Finally installed Firefox and everything seems to be working better. I'm afraid that old computer might be telling me something. I need to get my computer cousin down here. There are 4 computers in this house. Why do I worry they will all go down at once? I would rather clean the toilet and the oven than get a new computer and operating system. My computers are networked and I save things on each of them especially for back up. I used to use synctoy but I won't any more. It doesn't work like it used to and creates more problems than it fixes so I just save to each computer from which ever one I'm working on. That way I have it 3 times for sure. I've been having download failure at familysearch today. Is it me or is it them?

there is another thread here now that has some good discussion about firefox, at the bottom of that thread I have posted a link to tutorials on firefox.
Firefox does the same thing your Internet Explorer does but is much more customizable and is safer, you will not get rid of IE you will just add firefox so you have a choice between the two, both can be run at the same time.

The reason I use Firefox is that it blocks about 99.9% of the popup ads that are so annoying. You just can't get internet explorer to come anywhere close to doing that.

I also like the tabbed browsing feature in Firefox much better than IE 7.0.

Don't run both IE and Firefox at the same time! Security flaws in Internet Explorer can be exploited when both are run.

Do yourself a favor and dump Internet explorer totally. Make it a non-entity. You can remove it but it is difficult. Just make Firefox your default browser, then remove all shortcuts for IE. Make sure IE is not set to start up with windows.

you do not want to get rid of IE, should you need to go to the windows update site you will need to go using IE!!If you go using firefox it will not work. Any time you need to go to windows update site always go using IE.

There are no conflicts when using both is the point I was making, it will not cause problems. OF course the purpose of getting firefox is to be more secure!
