GE .. glass top stove .. no oven heat .. why?

hello ..

we have a two year old GE glass top stove. usually, when i open the oven door to inspect if things are ready .. the heat has been so amazing that i have to back away for a moment before proceeding. tonight, i began looking at the chicken about 45 minutes into baking .. and it wasnt even done.

i began again .. putting the temp at 350, waited 45 minutes and began to look to see if it was done .. and no heat whatsoever. :-(

what do you recommend we do?? of course, i can call a repair service but .. is there something someone can suggest as my husband is handy but has never dealt with stoves before

please lead us into thinking this one out .. we're hungry!

Examine the oven element. They burn out sometimes. If your husband has a multimeter, he can check to see if the element is getting current, and if it is, the element is the problem. It's an easy DIY fix if that's the issue. If it's not getting current, then it's probably something in a motherboard somewhere that will need a service call.

Melly, I'm remembering the conversation we had last season about that three-piece weight. I got mine nearly 30 years ago from Presto. At that time they specifically listed it in their canner manual as an accessory. It's intriguing that sometime later they quit recommending it, though as far as I know they've always offered the part, and now they're back saying it's OK again. Strangely enough, my All-American canner came with just that set-up, a gauge and a three-piece weight. They state specifically to go by the weight and that the gauge is just a visual reminder, nothing more. I've been fortunate. The Presto weight and the gauge have always been in sync, but if they weren't, like you I'd trust the weight since it's been machined for accuracy. I do like having the gauge, though. Carol

I know this post is old, and I hope you haven't taken the plunge yet. Please stay away from glass top ranges unless you have no interest in cooking and no appreciation for temperature, technique, or control. Also, stay away unless you want to have to bring out Bar Keeper's Friend every time you place a pot on the stove to just boil water. My Mother bought a Maytag glasstop range about 5 years ago after I warned her. Each time I visit I do all of the cooking and the cleaning. If I had my way I would take an ax to it. People get these because they're "easy to clean"??? Oh my gosh, it's a nightmare. The heat goes on and off. It takes FOREVER just to boil water. There is absolutely no control whatsoever. But wait, there's more.....You slip and drop something on it and it cracks,.....it's a huge expense to have it replaced. You ask what you should be looking for? NOT a glass or ceramic top. Stick with gas or electric.

Ditto to Mary's message. Enameled cast iron is the secret, I believe. It is smooth on the outside, gets hot and stays hot; and goes from fridge, to cooktop to oven to tabletop. I have about 10 pieces of Le Creuset enameled cast iron and use them on my glass cooktop every single day and have for the past 6+ years. We have rice nearly every night, and I have found that LC is the BEST for cooking rice (gave away the rice cooker after trying LC), bc once you are done you just take the pot off heat (I put mine on the matching LC trivet), keep the lid on, and it will stay hot for up to 30 minutes. You need to use common sense though, remembering that iron is very heavy (don't drop it on the glass or it will crack it) and just on principle, I do not drag them, or any other pots, across the glass. I always lift them to move them. I think the manufactures state not to use cast iron because they don't want a ton of reqeusts for warranty replacments due to broken glass from cast iron being dropped or dragged across the top and angry consumers blaming them for their own carelessness. We have a plastic "collar" that goes on the top of the open pot. Keeps stuff from boiling over. DH does all the cooking, and he selected a glass top induction stove. Yes, we had to buy new pots and pans, but got them on sale. We love the induction stove, but it is very expensive. When we rebuild the house in four years, we are keeping it. This is what the ring looks like. Everything else (burners, etc) on the unit working ok? Does broil work?

so far everything works (burners, broiler) but there is simply no heat eminating from the oven so no baking. i had played around with trying to put the timer on for the chicken .. i played with the 4 buttons around the 'timer' one. i now realize i probably shouldnt have .. but i thought i was just touching the clock which would have NOTHING to do with the oven .. did i mess things up? it is rather new, and i adored the level of heat it did .. until tonight .. :-(

husband is on the couch .. i wont ask him to get up .. but in the morning!!!

Sometimes the timer can get set to a "cook for 2 hours starting 3 hours ago" mode. Time has expired and it won't come on until it is reset, or changed out of 'timed-cooking' mode.

So sorry about your oven! Not to threadjack, but can you tell me about your glass top gas stove, please?! I am very curious about those and am considering one myself, but know NOTHING about them. Can you post a close-up photo, perhaps? GE's website is dreadfully lacking!!!

thanks to all who tried so nicely to be helpful. my husband spent hours checking over the oven, he reset clocks by unplugging, etc etc and finally brought the element to a repair shop to 'test' it to make sure it was the bake element. we bought a new one and even had baked chicken last night .. yummy.

tiskers, i dont have a photo at this point. however, cooking with it has been just wonderful and kinda fun, too. seeing the heat under one's pots is encouraging, i guess. cleaning the top is astoundingly easy since it is a flat surface. i spray vinegar usually to keep it clean. sometimes when a pot overflows, i might use the scrubbing product the machine came with cause those burned on areas can be difficult to clean away. however, i believe the heat you use the next time you cook burns off that area so again it is clean.
