You tried to up date the driver because the cursor was freezing? I thought you updated first then it started freezing. Did the freezing just start today?

I also think you have enough ram for what you are doing but you do have the minimum amount required.

What is the make & model #

It is very unlikely a virus or other malware has anything to do with your mouse problems. Where is the receiver for your mouse? The receiver is the part that plugs into the computer. Ours justs on top of the case and sometimes it gets knocked off and that causes the mouse to act erratically. A slight repositioning can also help. Beyond that, are you sure the batteries are good?

Thanks to each of you for responding! I had a computer tech come to my house & he said that the new mouse I bought did need some software installation (altho the box said it did not). He did that for me & I was right back in business. He also went through my installations & deleted some old & unnecessary ones & my computer is faster now. $37.50 & worth every penny to me! Thnx again...

raven... thanks your continued help with links I should have looked for myself. That said, I do like "looking" on this forum due to the many helpful leaders. On first looking at the link you provided I'd concur that it is the same question/problem. But, it seems to get get complicated quickly. At first try I thought switching off the Firefox "caret browsing" would be my fix. It is not, but at least I know "F7" is how we turn it on and off. I sometimes push "F7" when I want to activate spell check, but it on automatically (or by my choice). I think F7 is the trigger for Outlook spell check on email. The point, if I have one, is I hit F7 a few times when in Firefox and may have done some switching of the caret.

found this info on other forums about a Dell latitude I will list all of the various ways that I saw; you can go to Control Panel > Mouse and select the Dell Touchpad tab. There should be a Device Select icon which will give you the option to turn off the touchpad and/or touchpad buttons. Alternatively, for those who want to turn off the pointing stick and/or pointing stick buttons, there are also options to disable or enable those. *Start-->Settings--Control Panel double-click mouse and there's an option there to disable the touchpad *"For all of you having trouble enabling or disabling the touchpad: Turn on or off the Fast Initialization button under hardware properties for the Touchpad. Fast Initialization = On, then reboot, you are now able to turn the touchpad On or Off from Mouse Properties Hope this helps, it was a PITA to figure out." *Just go to control pannel and double click on 'mouse'. There should then be a tab called 'Touch pad' and click on that. There should then be an option 'Tap off when typing' enable that and your problem should be solved. It also said that if you do not find those options there then it is possible your touchpad drivers are not installed which would allow you to make the changes. "If the control panel only shows things about a "mouse", the touchpad drivers are not installed. You could try www.synaptics.com for drivers." found this on the dell site *Customizing the Touch Pad and Track Stick You can use the Mouse Properties window to disable the touch pad and track stick or adjust their settings. Open the Control Panel, and then click Mouse. For information about the Control Panel, see Windows Help and Support Center. In the Mouse Properties window: * Click the Device Select tab to disable the touch pad and track stick. * Click the Touch Pad tab to adjust touch pad and track stick settings. Click OK to save the settings and close the window. I hope out of those maybe something will work

So many things can cause this problem, lets start with the simple do a disk clean up and a Defrag here's how:

Click Start - Programs - Accessories - System tools do a disk clean up, after that do a defrag,

defrag could take a while if you have not done it and it may appear to get stuck on 10% but just let it sit, if you use a screen saver you should disable it as it could interfere with defrag.

Once you have completed the above exercise and because you have 512mb of ram we want to see what programs are running at start up especially the Anti Virus program, Do you know what Anti Virus program you are using?

Then I will ask for a Hijack this log so we can see what is running this will be the best way and save time I will give you those instructions later as we move along..

Good where ahead of the game,

Then in the link below please download hijackthis program (save it to your desk top), then double click the hijackthis .exe on the desk top a window will open with choices please do a "System scan and save a log file, this log will then automatically open in a program called Note pad, put your mouse in there and copy the entire contents of the log then reply here and paste the log so I can see it. Do use hijackthis to do anything else...

That's fine I only need the log that was created and it's very simple to copy it, put your mouse on top of the log or (The scan) now hold the left button on the mouse down and move the mouse down the scan at the same time everything will turn blue, when all the log is blue (right click mouse) and choose COPY. Then come back here and in the box instead of typing anything simply right click the mouse in the box you would normally type in and choose PASTE and the log will appear just as if you typed it then hit the submit button and I will be able to see it. You can fool around with it until you get help. Don't worry I'm not going anywhere and will help as much as I can.

Please run this program see if it finds anything follow the directions below and post a log please.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here

You also have left over Norton Anti Virus files running at start up, do you know what version of Norton was installed on here?

You also appear to have 2 Anti Spyware programs running:

Service: AOL Spyware Protection Service (AOLService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\AOL Spyware Protection\\aolserv.exe

    AND

    HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe

    Is this the paid version?

Only one spyware program should be running I would remove Aol (Spyware program) from the add remove programs list

It's no wonder the computer is slow and freezing with all the stuff running, Dell Support, 2 Anti Virus programs, 2 left over Norton Anti Virus files and Window Washer.. + Avast and the normal stuff..

All this with 512mb of ram...

Take your time and we will work one thing at a time I'll be waiting for the Malwarebytes log, and tell me that you have removed aol spyware program.

    ravencajun

The last thing I am going to do here is install any software including a firewall and java . I am aware of the Norton problem just not sure of the version I think it could be 2004 but I want to run the correct uninstaller...for the version.. when we get there.

    Thanks,

    zep

After that we are going to remove Dell support from the add remove programs list if you do use dell support there is little sense having it running on the computer wasting ram.

I have had an expert take a look at your hijackthis log no Malware was found, once you remove the 3 things Dell support, aol spyware and Left over norton:

    Please do this below:

Double click the hijackthis Icon on the Desktop, Scroll down to Open the Misc Tools section" Click it at the bottom under (System tools) click "Open Uninstall Manager" over to the right click "Save List" Save it to your Desktop so you may find it, copy and paste it in your next reply..

I know there is a lot of instruction here take your time one thing at a time I have posted a lot so you may refer to it over time as needed.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 5 Please remove this..

Real player----- remove this if you do not use it.

DO NOT UNINSTALL AOL SPYWARE YET if you already did don't worry.

Also I do not see Dell support, DO not uninstall Dell resource cd..

Let me look up removing dell support unless some else here knows the steps.

The above entries are still running on the pc the removal of dell support should have taken care of this (sprtcmd.exe)

And the Norton removal should have taken care of these (ALUNotify.exe)

There still there in the log.

Click start, click run in the RUN BOX type in MSCONFIG and hit ok a window will open at the top click startup tab now look for these (ALUNotify.exe) and this one (sprtcmd.exe). If you do not see them in the startup tab please click the SERVICES TAB and look there.

When you find them in the little box next to them put you mouse in there and REMOVE THE CHECK MARK FROM THE BOX.

When you are done REBOOT the computer, a window will pop up that you may have never seen, place a CHECK MARK IN THE BOX WHERE IT SAYS "DO NOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN"

Most of dell support is gone so that is good just that left over one. Do not do a system restore.

Post a fresh hijackthis log so we can see if the entries are gone...Make sure you have rebooted first,

Get help from Granddaughter if needed I will be in and out on Sunday checking in..

Dell support is gone, these 2 below remain,

Norton is stubborn every time you reboot these 2 entries are reinstalling.

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'Default user')

So lets try this lets boot the computer in safe mode here is how.

    Using the F8 Method
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
    3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
    5. Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

This is the task you will do, once in safe mode double click the hijachthis icon this is where it is a little different pay attention,

Do (system scan only) in other words don't save a log file do a system scan only now in the scan you are looking at place a check mark in these 2 entries BELOW only- no others

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'SYSTEM') PLACE A CHECK IN THIS ENTRY IN THE LITTLE BOX TO THE LEFT OF IT

O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'Default user') AND THIS ONE PLACE A CHECK IN THIS ENTRY IN THE LITTLE BOX TO THE LEFT OF IT.

Now at the bottom of hijack this click where it says (FIXED CHECKED) now close hijackthis

NEXT LETS SEE IF THERE ARE ANY NORTON FOLDERS STILL IN SAFE MODE SEE BELOW:

Open my computer Icon in the start menu double click the LOCAL DISK, Look for Program files FOLDER in there look for any folders with the name live up date or norton or Symantec or ALUNotify.exe anything related to this, and right click and delete it in safe mode,

Reboot post a fresh log (System scan and save a log file)

We are doing all this so you do not have to go into the Windows registry

What happened to these 2 entries in you log I do not see them,??????

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\(12C5C676-13A0-49F9-A83B-4EA630B5E530): NameServer = 205.188.146.145

    O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\..\(12C5C676-13A0-49F9-A83B-4EA630B5E530): NameServer = 205.188.146.145

These entries are for AOL Connection...

Do not go fixing things with hijack unless under instruction most of what it shows is required..

    Congratulations, Patricia

Norton is gone, please UNINSTALL hijackthis now you will not be needing it, I see the 017 entries are back good. You're log looks like it should and the computer should be running better with no freezing, if freezing does occur you will consider adding more ram, personally I would consider adding another 512MB to give you a total of 1GIG byte this isn't absolutely necessary but will really improve the performance of the computer..

Last thing as Raven pointed out you need to install a firewall there are free ones available.

And at some point here I would upgrade to IE7 you are currently running IE6. 7 is more secure the 6.

    How is the computer running?

    zep

excellent job zep and patricia! good work, I know doing those logs can be intimidating.

For anyone following as Zep said be sure you only ever use Hijackthis with the help of someone who absolutely knows how to read the logs, it can be a dangerous program other wise.

Patricia I am proud of you!
