AVAST! ...need help understanding

My computer is slow..more the feeling of not minding. Also lots of "programs not responding". I downloaded free AVG and it scanned tons of every possible problem and would not fix unless it was bought. I removed it and went with AVAST!. I scanned and don't understand the results. It reads something like press 1 for delete, 2 for delete all, 3 remove 4 remove all........more numbers for move to chest, ignore and exit. There was number 7 for fix problem, which I clicked on and the result was that it did not fix. I pressed on number 1 and have no idea what it deleted, seemed like quite a bit......I got scared and just exited. I don't remember the sequence of the numbers nor exactly what was on them. The above is just an example.......I do not have other anti-virus installed. I removed Norton when it expired and went a few weeks having none, stupidly assuming I had some protection from my AT&T internet and AOL...Now my question is what am I supposed to do with the results from AVAST!? delete, move, ignore, click each number one at a time? Or am I doing something wrong and getting the wrong results? I really need help. These non responding windows take time to come alive and I keep piling windows trying to get them to work....Plus the ones that just come up on their own.. A MESS.

Avast and AVG are both excellent free programs. However AVG now offer 3 different freebies, which are you running? They offer the anti virus program that has been around for years. Now they also offer an anti spyware program, it's icon has the letter S in the middle. Then they offer the anti Rootkit program

When I use an anti virus program I always leave it at the default settings except for adjusting the scan time to 3 a.m. rather than 8 a.m. and never have any problems. Have you altered the settings at all?

If you are only running Avast for protection you should seriously consider getting more for anti spyware and malware. Unlike an anti virus where you should only run one at a time you should consider at least 2 of these programs. Here are a few free ones, there are others probably equally as good.
Spywareblaster
Spybot Search and Destroy
SUPERAntispyware
BOClean
AVG anti spyware

I would suggest staying away from AdAware2007 as it seems overbloated compared to the old AdAwareSE which will cease to get updates effective January 1st as I understand it.

You might consider a couple of free online scans to see what uninvited guests are running on your computer. There are many, here are a few.
Bitdefender
Housecall aka Trend Micro
Symantec
Panda
eTrust
Ewido
Fsecure
I belive they all remove things with a fee, the first 2 definitely do.

You should be able to remove / Delete everything AVAST finds safely. In some cases Avast will not be able to remove some files and at that point it will ask you to send it to chest or virus vault so do that. Then run some of the tools owbist recommend, Spybot Search and Destroy, and SUPERAntispyware, these 2 tools should be enough to clean pc up pretty well, anything left over will require special removal tools, there is another thread here where the Vundo.exe tool and smithfraud tools are being recommend. From your description it sounds like you are also infected and should run these tools. Follow the advice in this TOPIC--SPYWARE INFECTION

To take a screen shot, hold down the Control key And while holding it down hit the Print Screen key. Then release both keys. Open MS Paint (or another graphics program) and hold down the Control key again, and this time press the v key. This should paste a screenshot in the graphics program. Save the file from there. I don't see how any toilet - save one on a boat or R/V - could possibly function without a vent stack. "but the vent goes to the garage" would not be approved by any building inspector anywhere in this country. Perhaps it was a "SPOT" - stupid previous owner trick. There is one possibility - other than installing a toilet and vent properly - which apparently was not done. The vent or soil pipe could have been pierced by a drill, nail or screw, especially if PVC was used. As an appraiser. I've seen that happen before. And yes, I *almost* made that rookie mistake myself, installing a new cabinet over the toilet. Since this is a 1938 house with plaster on lath walls, I was using a stud finder and drilling pilot holes. One was in an unexpected location, but it was *perfectly* placed. But it wouldn't drill...and that's when I realized it was the cast iron vent stack. No harm done....

Hello, i just moved into an apartment with fuse panel. Our power contuousl was going out everytime we’d Plug something in. I replaced both cartridge fuses and both those screw in fuses. It still didnt work. Now when i wasnt here, the landlord came in, and when we got home our electric was magically on. Now i went to plug a lamp in to a power strip with only the internet plugged in. Nothing else in any outlet , and the power went off and about 20-30 mins later it turned on by itself. Now we haven’t used any outlets since that in fear of not having electricity. But today i needed to set my living room up. I need to set the Tv up so all i did was UNplug the internet box from the power strip, and now i dont have electricity all over again. Please help

@kudzu9- Glad you had no problems with Luxe @Mike Blasko - I tried to look at the specs but there is no mention of the fact - if the stainless steel has gone through a passivation treatment like you said. So I will look into it further and decide on FIXED SIZE drain (no cutting on site one) and go with either LUXE or Infinity. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think someone recommended that we not install the drain from wall to wall because it is hard to remove the drain and clean it or something.. So any idea if 1" space on either side is enough or do we need to leave more like say 2"-4". For example if I have a 38" wall to wall measurement of the shower floor - can I buy a 36" drain or not? @kudzu9 how much space did you leave from the edge on either side? Thanks

Thanks, I MUST have done something wrong. I worked on it some more and that page did not come up again. I followed advise and put a wormed file in the chest. Now what? Does it stay in there forever and ever? What if it was a file that I must have? I do have the Spybot S&D so please link me to the other thing that I need......Sorry not to say more. Just got company........will come by later, many thanks

I downloaded SUPERAntispyware and my computer now seems to work better. I knew you all would help. I always read here and once in a while come in for help and you always come through for me. Thanks for the help

Anything you put in the chest can be safely deleted.
Don't worry, these are files you don't want.
