Mandoline suggestions please

I am looking to buy a Mandoline/Slicer. I slice a lot of vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots etc on a daily basis and figured that this could be an useful thing to have. I would like some suggestions on brand names and prices. Thanks.

I use mine all the time, and I had a "real" mandoline that I finally gave away because I never took it out anymore. The Boerner (there's an umlaut over the "o," hence the "e," so sometimes it googles as "Borner") works great, perfect onion and cucumber slices pile up to the heavens in no time.

Lots of folks IIRC (Washington Post; Gourmet) like the Oxo. Brenner also makes a slicer, but I don't know if it's "v" or slanted.

Another Borner V-slicer owner. I bought a very slightly used one off eBay for a good savings and then, about a year later, found one at a garage sale for a couple of bucks, so I bought that one also. Backup in case anything breaks. What I don't like about the V-slicer is that slicing is confined to predetermined thicknesses (controlled by inserts.) There is no fine-tuning, dial adjustablility. To be truthful, I've only owned one for a couple of years & have only attempted slicing. Haven't explored julienning, etc. As far as slicing, I have problems keeping the veggies situated to get perfect 90 degree cuts. About halfway thru a cuke, I'm getting angled cuts. Also, I've not used it nearly as much as I thought I would...but have found that it earns its keep during harvest season just for making cucumber slices for hamburger dills. Another thing is that my kitchen is dreadful so I have mostly avoided any cooking with much degree of complication. Once I have a somewhat functional kitchen, I'll no doubt have more creativity but suspect that I'll want to upgrade to a mandoline that has more user control. Thanks RiverRat--she knows that I travel with my chopper. I didn't chime in on this as I don't have hints on even onion slices other than be careful. I do use a finger guard-I can't find the exact item online but it's a thick silicone strip holding the stainless steel finger protectors together. I haven't (knocking on wood) drawn blood with my super sharp slicer, see link below. It's pricey but I was fortunate to get it from a neighborhood garage sale still in the box. For chopping, I use an older version of the Nicer Dicer. It's still kicking and I use it several times a week. Beau loves it because you have to give it a karate chop to cube the onions or whatever is being chopped. A tip is to wet the blades before your first chop. Here is a link that might be useful: Slicer

terra, I read Eleni a few years ago (and then read the sequel, A Place for Us, about the families immigration and life in the US). I so agree that Eleni is excellent. I knew next to nothing about Greeces role in WWII, and had no idea there even was a civil war. There were many parts of Corelli that reminded me of the book. I agree with you about the characters, and found much of the plot well written. I had one major quibble (SPOILER ALERT) I thought it was totally out of charcter for Corelli not to come back to his beloved. Even given that he saw she had a child, he had too much heart not to at least have said hello, to reassure her, something, anything then sneaking in every year or so to spy on her. That part made me so angry I had to reread it to make sure I was getting the whole picture. I am very glad to have read the book after I saw the movie. I had no idea about who Mandras really was and what he became by the time he showed back up at her door.

I bought the stainless steel one from the Chef's warehouse sale. I can't say I recommend it. The blades are hard to get in and out and every time I do, I end up hitting the blade on the metal housing. :( So, they get dull quickly and a replacement is expensive. I am going to talk to my knife guy about sharpening it, to see if that is an option. I think I would rather have what Melic has, but I spend so much money on this one that I don't feel like i can go buy another for a while.

Whatever kind you get DO use the plastic piece to push whatever you are cutting through. The blades are very sharp and the vegetable will get small quickly, let your mind wonder for a second and you'll get a very nasty cut.

Ashleysf, did you decide on one? I've been following your post since I'm looking for one also. I have one of the V slicers, but I don't care for it. It's a cheap one, so that may be part of it.
I was looking at one made by Oxo Goodgrips and wondered if any of you have tried it. I also looked at one of the $150 models, but couldn't find out much about it on the box and I'd rather not spend that much.

Have you checked out the the Norpro manoline? one positive point with this unit is you can sharpen the blade youself instead of having to buy a new blade like the Oxo, also the Norpro has a adjusting knob as well. I bought a Oxo to tear it down to inspect how it works and desided to return the product, I like the Norpro better, the Zyliss is a throw away toy, I didnt like that one at all,
