Just wanted to share photos of my recent trip to Savannah, Georgia, with you. Four friends from high school (that would make us very *old* friends!) stayed at a lovely condo at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We went to Savannah on Saturday, May 16 for the day where we had lunch, walked the streets and squares, took a pedicyle tour, and saw a wonderful show at the theatre.

Large trees like this one are everywhere in Savannah and most drip with evocative Spanish moss.

Here is a corner restaurant with outdoor seating, a familiar sight in the business district.

We had lunch at South Soho Gallery Cafe - part art gallery, part restaurant - very good food.

A lovely fountain in a private garden.

A decorative dolphin downspout; we weren't the only folks taking pictures of this!

Oglethorpe Square, where we enjoyed just sitting for about twenty minutes before the show started; very cool and peaceful under those big trees.

Another square, another group of statues; this square had it's own "orator" present who seemed to be giving the by-play of a golf match to his buddies who were seated in the area of the curved benches.

A fun way to tour the area - in a trolley!

My friend, June - we go waaaay back to seventh grade and graduated high school right beside each other since we had the same last name. Old friends are the best! That is the English-style phone booth at Six Pence Pub; this was the pub in the movie "Something to Talk About" with Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid, where she saw him with the "other women."

April and May in Savannah are lovely - not too hot or humid yet and not too crowded with tourists either. Great places to eat, shop, visit, and just sit and people watch.

Teresa that looks like a beautiful place to visit. I have always admired the backgrounds and the rhododendron bushes of the Georgia golf courses when my DH watches tournaments on TV! I love the Spanish moss hanging from the trees.
I'm glad to hear you had a good time with your school pals.
Friends are so very important and are even more special when you've known them for so long.

Teresa, what a lovely city, and it is sure nice to get together with old friends. Elery asked if that was a "live oak" tree?

What, no food pictures? LOL.

Anewgarden - No New York for me! Got to stay close to home so I don't miss seeing any of the flowers bloom. Token - I've got plenty of dozing on the porch time schedule for next year. :) This is the big year for me. The garden is filling up with perennials and good seed producing non-fuss annuals. Next year's work will mainly be hoeing and direct sowing. The flower beds are set up so that I can easily wheel hoe the perimeter paths and the tending aisles once a week. A daily walk through carrying a narrow collinear hoe or wire weeder (link below) is plenty to pop out weed seedling while they are still tiny and keep the soil nice and puffy. The whole thing is set up so that we are not fighting with our local growing conditions. Vegetables get grown in containers in great compost instead of poor Appalachian soil. Flower gardens get augmented with last year's veg container compost and are densely planted with drought tolerant species - including many ornamental cultivars of species that are wildflower weeds in the region. "Shrub row" is the row that merges into the drainage ditch by the road. Ditch weeds will always be a problem there so I set that one up to grow shrubs and direct seeded tender annuals. After frost I can pull up the annuals and feed them to the goats and wheel hoe everything but the shrubs. Then do a second wheel hoe weeding in mid-April and direct sow densely as soon as it looks like we are done with frost for the year. During the summer I'll nip off big weeds before they flower (if I can be bothered) but the main work in that area is just keeping the path between row 10 and shrubrow wheel hoed weekly so native plants and weeds don't encroach on my garden. Hey Vivian! Just saying hi, I can't make it to that swap, as I was already going to be out of town. Hope it goes well and I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. BTW the purple hyacinth bean vines are blooming! It is so much more exciting to have success after having had failure with seeds last year. They are beautiful! Tonya

Thank you Laurie_2008 for the compliments on the changes that I have made and on my cute little dogs that are so lovable and really enhance my life. Les917, thank you for the compliments on my choice of floors and I also feel they are warm and rich and went so well with my decor. I just sometimes wonder if I should have went with the 3.25" width. I chose the wider width feeling with my little dogs, that the less seams the better I would be. I agree that one day I should buy a flat screen TV that would really free up space by being on the wall rather than the 17 year old oak TV Stand that I bought new rubber wheels for. I will share pics when that happens but for now I am going to spend the money on my kitchen first as prices for LCD screens go down. Then I will be posting and asking for advice. Les917, you have an eye for detail and furniture arrangement. I agree that the new layout would be so much better for walking into the room but when viewing my room and picturing it I realized that I would be looking into my home office which I do not want to do. I will ask some friends if some silk plants can block that area. I did look at new TV stands that were more modern and sleek but then if I buy one to fit this TV, it may not fit a new TV in the future so I added rubber wheels instead and decided to fix up the kitchen first. I still need a picture in the family room but I don't want to add framed pictures until I am sure of the set up with my furniture. I did buy the colorful silk flowers for the coffee table and I love them. I had the white ones in my bedroom and I miss them there but for now, I wanted my family room to have some more accessories and color. So far I like the arrangement better than the sofa on the wall facing the kitchen since then the TV had to be too close to the kitchen and did not feel like the rooms were separate and the white cable cord really showed up on the floor since where the TV is now, is where the cable cord is. I could of course have it moved to another wall but first I want to be absolutely sure the TV would be permanent there since it is costly for a service call to move the cable jack.

Annie, not sure if all the trees are live oaks or not. They're too tall to check out the leaf formation. Yeah, I should have taken a pic of my Cuban sandwich and Chipotle Potato Salad - it was some good! You and Elery should come down in November or March when you could avoid the Southern heat and humidity - ha!

Sharon, I think you would love Savannah. We rode by the Mercer House, setting for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The old homes in Savannah are amazing - you have to spend a lot of time looking over a single home just to take in all the detail.

Thanks for bringing us along to one of my favorite cities! I loved Savannah and Charleston, and I'm sure that you gals had a great time! That Spanish moss is ethereal and I loved all of the history and movie facts around the town! I found some of the churches and the synagogue's architecture most interesting. It's the second oldest reform synagogue in the US and was built to look like a church from the exterior to better blend in with the other churches on the squares.
We have a photo in our hallway that DH took of the steeple from the Protestant church on Chippewa Square (?) where the feather floats from during the opening sequence of "Forrest Gump". The interior of that particular church has a very interesting ceiling IIRC.

Yes, Ellen - the churches and synagogue are amazing! And our pedi-cycle guy told us they had to take out that Forrest Gump bench and move it to a museum because so many tourists were blocking traffic there to have their pictures taken while sitting on the bench. There is a flower bed there now.

They've done such a wonderful job of preservation in Savannah -- it's a lovely town.

Did you enjoy the theatre? It's owned by the family of a very good friend of ours. My children do theatre here in Colorado with their family (their entire family is incredibly talented). We visited there a few months ago and saw "Hooray for Hollywood". Wish we lived closer so we could see more of their shows.

dlynn, we perhaps saw the same show and it was fantastic. Singers, dancers, live music, great costumes - very enjoyable. My friends saw the 50's show previously and said the Hispanic "Elvis" was the hit of that show.

Oh, Teresa, now I want to go there. It is beautiful. I have never been to Savannah. Dany! I don't get any decent amount of vacation time until next year. I am envious. the pictures are wonderful, and you all make a beautiful group.

Oh, what fun! We went to Savannah a couple of years ago and LOVED it! We're just dying to go back. I do believe the houses there are the most beautiful I've ever seen anywhere. You're making me "crave" Savannah again!

Teresa, you all seem to be enjoying yourselves; how wonderful that you've all remained such close friends over the years.

And Savannah is absolutely beautiful, any time of year. I've only been there twice, but I'd move there in a heartbeat.

What a lovely town! Have never spent any time in that area, actually very little time up the entire Atlantic Coast. I sense the plans for another road trip coming on.

Looks like you had a wonderful time....but which one is you?

Look at what I have missed by not looking here regularly. I have never been to Savannah, but now I want to.

Sounds like you had a great time and your pictures are wonderful.

Do you and your high school friends take a trip regularly? We met some ladies on a cruise a few years ago that were HS friends and they took an annual trip. I thought that was so cool.
