I had Comcast and switched to Verizon FIOS as soon as I could. It is faster and more reliable for a number of reasons. First, you get a dedicated line, no sharing, so in the evenings or on weekends when all the neighbors get on line, your connection keeps going at your chosen speed (I have their slowest speed and it is 6mb down and 2 up I think, very fast)and doesn't slow down like cable with their sharing system. Also, it's fiber optic so it's more reliable than copper wire when it gets wet or cold or whatever. Definately go for it and when they offer you their TV service, also an excellent improvement over Comcast.

Oh, I forgot. They also give you a wireless/wired modem so you can use either for no additional cost. My Comcast did not include wireless.

I switched from Charter cable to Verizon FIOS. I absolutely love it! With Charter I had nothing but problems the whole time I had it. Verizon is so much better in every way and about the same price.

my condo unit (in upstate NY) was recently wired for FIOS but wont be available for a couple of weeks. i now have cablevision, one of the biggest monpolies, which i despise..have friends who have and love fios, and they beat the price over cablevision. yes, competition is good!

I would also vote for fiber. I have the wired/wireless modem, the wireless part sucks. It has very little range and is a little difficult to get to work with router.

Jimbo, I see you have problems with the wireless part. I was wondering, are you using another router with it?, as it is a router itself and do you have the FIOS modem "D Link, Airplus Extreme G". I also found putting it on a top shelf of my bookshelf so it has no obstruction allowed it much greater range. My house is over 2800sq ft and it works all over.

I presently have Cablevision, which is getting too expensive. Anyone with Cablevision thinking of switching to Verizon FIOS?

I currently have Comcast Business Pro Service ($52.50 a month roughly) and get blazing fast downloads (between 8 and 10 mbps) with respectable uploads just below a T1 line speed(700-1000 kbps).

Super low latency (5ms-10ms to the gateway server) compared to Verizon DSL (80ms-120ms) I used to have which is good because I am an avid online gamer so latency is important. Plus I also have the ability to run network servers so the extra speed is a real bonus, and combined with the low latency, its a no brainer for me at least.

Cable is a more expensive choice, I will agree, but I perfer the performance and functionality benefits, my cable provides over my dsl choice available to me, over price when it comes to my technology choices.

At least that's the way it boils down for me in south-eastern Pennsylvania.

Where I live, neither Verizon nor any other fiber optic is available to me. No cable either. I do have DSL. DSL is on a copper phone wire. Speaking from a technical perspective, of the Internet services above dial-up, the DSL (copper wire) probably is the slowest, the cable (coax) should be next and the fiber optic should be the fastest by far. Perhaps some "cable" providers are actually using fiber optic. I suppose that would put them on par with any other provider using fiber optic. Be sure to use Verizon if possible, I am a stockholder!
