Miele DW Warranty - Yay or Nay

Awhile back, our 6-7 year old Miele DW went bad and I opted to replace rather than repair with another Miele. It was just not worth the cost...

Now, almost 5-6 months into it, I'm debating....whether to add the MieleCare to my new DW or not.

You might want to do it. Our refrigerator had a fan problem when it was barely a year old. It would have cost $100 just to get the repairman to come out and look at it. Plus $75 or more in parts.

I would.

If you decide to go with it, call them on Black Friday or Cyber Monday and ask whether they are offering any deals.

I got 10% off warranty for my washer and dryer on Cyber Monday. I'm buying a fridge warranty on CM this year.

There once was a time when nearly every brand new appliance would offer a decade or more of trouble-free operation. Even those that occasionally failed could be repaired for far less than the cost of replacement. However, times have obviously changed. There are two things about the modern kitchen that decrease the lifespan and increase the expense of maintaining today's appliances. 1. The "built-in" look has become very trendy. While this may lend itself to a more pleasing aesthetic, it often inhibits proper air circulation around appliances which are installed in this manner. One notable example would be the refrigerator. There are fins on refrigerator coils that are prone to dust accumulation. This is especially true in kitchens where airborne grease is not being sufficiently removed by the exhaust hood above the range. Grease will collect on the fins, making them a magnet for dust. As the dust accumulates, air flow through the fins becomes increasingly limited and typically prompts early component failures on the refrigerator. All appliances produce a certain amount of heat. If proper air circulation is also compromised by surrounding cabinetry, it's almost a given that your appliance will not deliver the performance and life expectancy that you desire. 2. Today's appliances are ultra sensitive to their environment. This is due to the myriad number of printed circuit boards that modern appliances incorporate. Digital electronics have the ability to greatly enhance the features and benefits that continue to amaze us with each new model introduction. Unfortunately, the downside is that the components which use digital electronics are vulnerable to voltage fluctuations, heat and vibration. Even a passing thunderstorm poses a threat that shouldn't be taken lightly. Many utility companies recognize this and offer whole house surge protection as a supplemental service, although it isn't foolproof by any means. When you combine inadequate air circulation and the unstable current flow that every home electrical system routinely experiences, the potential for appliance failure is ever-present. Bottom line: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding appliance installation. Ask your utility company about surge protection devices. Consider extending the warranty on any appliance that involves significant expense to purchase or maintain.

I have a Miele Futura Classic. It replaced a higher end KitchenAid about 9 months ago. The KitchenAid contoller board was fried in a power drop. Haven't had that problem with the Miele. Mine is the simplest model with the cutlery tray. I wish I had gotten the Futura with the crystal cycle, but it wasn't in the budget. Classic works very well for 95% of the dishes. The turbo button on the normal cycle for smaller loads cuts the cycle time by about 60 minutes to 90 minutes. That includes the condensation dry. Be aware that neither the Bosch nor the Miele has the heated drying cycle typical in an American model. The model you're considering has some moveable tines on the adjustable racks that I found intriguing, but didn't have the hidden controls I need for the little people in the house. I appreciated the fact that my Miele salesman asked what kind of water I had in the house. If you have hard water, you might want to consider the on-board water softener option. We have a high iron content in our water so the stainless steel tub eliminates the red ring we get when tubs aren't scrubbed regularly. The sanitize cycle gives us the 155 degree rinse I wanted to sterilize everything. I don't put the pots in the dishwasher like many do, but you definitely can. I do put the filters from my range top vent hood in the dishwasher and it does a beautiful job de-greasing them. Good luck with your choice.

fenworth, We've made the TJ cookies tons of times at home using a GE Profile oven (as stated in my original post). We also made them in a Wolf oven at a Wolf center. In both the GE and the Wolf, the cookies come out fairly "normal", even when the dough is completely defrosted (which is not recommended). We did return to Miele, used a different oven in the store, and got the same flatter-than-flat cookies, even with a TJ box that was bought 15 minutes before entering the Miele store. I can't say whether or not the grease filter was installed during cookie baking - as a newbie to the Miele oven, that's not something I would have been aware of (I kind of hope the people working at the Miele center know how to use their own ovens.) Maybe it's this particular Miele store installation, or this particular cookie dough recipe, but there's definitely something different about the way the Miele ovens we've tried bake these cookies.

Hi cj47 We really like our EL wahser/dryer and have had zero problems. On the washer we usually add extra water to the cycles just to get a better wash and rinse. To tell the truth we haven't tried it without the extra water but we've heard people complain about other front loaders and that they wish they had the option to add more water. We leave the washer door open when we're not using it so the door gasket dries out. Also we'll occasionally wipe the gasket and glass in the door with used towels as we put them in the washer and we haven't had any strange smells from the door gasket. The washer uses very little detergent. I suggest you use less than recommended by Electrolux. The dryer has been great too. I've used the steam freshen cycle to take the wrinkles out of clothes I want to wear but are not yet dirty (or not too dirty to wear!). This worked well. Our contractor and plumber scratched their heads at why we needed a water supply for the dryer... The programming is super easy. My wife usually doesn't like programmable controls but after the first couple of tries she has not had any problem with them, or with the electronic wave touch controls on the Electrolux Icon double ovens. I went to a Miele dealer last Friday, and was told Miele is having promotion now and all Miele dishwashers have 5 year warranty. Should 5-year be long enough?

I don't have any detailed information. I went to a Miele dealer in the bay area last Friday, expressing my concern that Miele Dimension that I was interested in did not have 5 year warranty as the Diamond model, and repair was not easy for Miele appliances. The saleslady there told me Miele is having a promotion of 5 year warranty on all dishwashers. I did not see any sign there saying that and did not order anything that day. Maybe you could call a dealer confirming if it's true.

Contact Miele and they should be able to confirm - you can register your DW at the same time.

My original Miele was a lemon and the only appliance that I purchased a warranty - so got 100% of my $$ back at 4.5 years.
I was not going to get another Miele - but after searching, I knew I had to get another one. I did purchase the warranty again - I had an issue with the softener and they replaced it for free but would have been within the warranty period. I also had them check the filter as the door wouldn't stay closed. The tech showed me how to make it stay but left a new one with me. Now, I just swap them out and send the other one through the DW - so easy!

I did not get any other warranties - Kind of wishing I had bought one for my Wolfie oven - but was too late by the time I decided. So far, everything else is holding its own.

In general, I have been against purchasing the warranties - but with the new electronics, I am re-thinking my position on warranties. I always figured I could "self insure" and be ahead of the game. So, I take the $$ I would spend on all of the warranties and put it into a virtual bank. Then, if I need a repair, I can figure out the value of my investment and subtract what I spent from my total.

So bottom line - decide your risk factor vs investment and make a decision. I think all appliances should come with a 10 year warranty. Some European appliances already have this. It seem ridiculous that appliances are a throw away commodity anymore.

Off topic but related - I just bought a new car. It came with a 3 year warranty but I plan to keep much longer. I decided to get the warranty that takes it to 7 years that covers all repairs for the same reasons.

My Miele DW is now ten, nearly 11. No waranty and never a repair. Didn't take one out on the oven and it wouldn't have mattered. It's 8 now and we had a lightning storm that blew out the less expensive of the 2 boards. Repair was $800.

Did buy warranty on the washer/dryer. Those were $240 each. Within first year some contact loosened and the hot water wouldn't work. Non-warranty repair would have been close to full price of full warranty. So that paid off and there are still several years to go.

Plan to get one for the fridge.

Miele has excellent service in our area so I feel I'm covered with warranty. That may be tipping point for some.

But it's like insurance. You get it because you'll never know if you need it or not.

I purchased a Miele Diamante Plus 4.5 years ago and purchased the 5 year a Miele warranty for $250.
About 16 months after purchase they had to replace the small propeller motor in the bottom of the sump area.
Then after that the front stainless door had to be replaced at the "clean touch" coating was coming off. Then the year later the racks had to be replaced as they were rusting from the bottom.
So for $250, the warranty was worth it.
I always get the extended warranties on appliances. Even on the $1900 Kitchen Aid fridge I got in 2006, the ice maker had to be replaced 3 times in 5 years.
