win 98 start up

I had to do a scanreg/restore in my win 98se and now when I start up I get a black screen with win 98 startup menu with all the options starting with blinking1.normal 2. logged3. safe mode, etc. I hit enter on the normal and all goes well except it still comes back at startup and I cannot get rid of it, any help? Thanks.

For any number of reasons it is not booting in to the operating system an you already knew that....

Can you tell us the original error or condition that caused you to require a (scanreg/restore)..

1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you are running Windows Me, start your computer with the startup disk.
2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.

3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.
4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER.NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.

5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.

Hello owbist, Thought I would get back with you and let you know that what you told me to do worked, it is no longer popping up at startup. When I went to where you told me to, I found Kodak Easy Share in there and removed it. Nothing has ever been in there up until now and I wondered what that was for. Now I know "Smiles" One thing I forgot last night was to give my operating system. You must have read my mind. Ha! BTW it is WinXPSP2. The difference between success and failure could still be the browsers. IE is more intensive on resources than FF. If you feel like experimenting do a C-A-D and end everything but Explorer and System Tray. Then try IE and shutdown. What brand is the system? HP at one time had a sound driver/Win98 conflict with shutdown. You might want to try the Windows 98 Help search word "troubleshoot" (sans quotes). Without going out to the garage to verify, my recollection is there is a Startup and Shutdown troubleshooter in Win98. Also, my recollection is SFC will identify changed and corrupt files, but unless you can find the specific file in the Windows .inf folder you will need a Win98 disk to extract it from to repair. Maybe you could download a bootdisk and make a bootable floppy then you should have access the C: drive. If it doesnt start to a dos prompt you'll need to access the bios and set it so it looks to boot from floppy drive (FD) before Hard Drive (HD). This guy has a boot floppy exe that you download, then insert a floppy before running it and it automatically formats and makes a 98SE bootfloppy. I havent used this, he was first one that turned up in a search. It's hard to believe it wont let you get to a dos prompt. Have a feeling you've a loose wire or connection inside. Thanks,I found the problem under sys config utility ,advanced the enable start menue was checked for some reason, don't rember why the scan/reg restore,something was not working right,all is well now,thanks again,
