second-guessing our architect's final plans- now what?

We hired our architect based on the recommendation of several family members who used him. During our design process, he would draw up pretty much what we asked, but never had any suggestions or vision of his own. This wasn't too much of a problem for us as we knew what we wanted, but after touring an almost finished house that he designed, we are very nervous. This other house is not at all the style of ours (theirs is a big Texas ranch style, and ours is a Southern New Old House) which isn't our concern, but it lacks any creativity or custom touches. Additionally, several spaces seem awkward, and the lighting plan is poorly done (too much light in the bedrooms, dungeon-like bathrooms).

We know that we need our plans tweaked one more time as the final copy had some random arches added back in that we had nixed in the first draft, plus we want to remove some windows and update the kitchen design, since he left that part pretty much blank. We think we need a Lighting Designer to do the lighting plan, as there are 12' ceilings downstairs and 9' upstairs, and the architect just put in a basic grid pattern of recessed cans, which is not what we want. Is it unheard of to ask for a copy of the CAD file (we have a PDF) and have another architect or residential designer to consult on it to make sure we're not making any big mistakes? How much detail in the finished product design should we expect in our plans? Ours don't seem to be very specific, besides where the studs go!

Some background info: DH is going to GC it- he has general construction knowledge, but this will be his first house to build on his own. We are in the Houston area. The house is approx 5300 sq ft. We're a growing family with 3 boys who are 5 and under.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here? We don't know when we are starting construction- we own the land and are waiting to build until our current house is sold. There's no immediate rush, besides just wanting to get this process over with!
