Change Windows Update Settings problem

Hi everyone,

For the past two weeks when I shut my computer down and start it back up I see on my task bar a flag with a red X. When I click on it I see this: Change Windows update settings (Important)

When I click on that I get this message. In the Action Center.
Install Updates automatically (recommended) when I click on that it fixes the problem. But it keeps coming back and this has happened 4 times in a row. It never did this before and I don't understand why it is doing it now. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening?

Windows 7 Asus Laptop.

Rebuild windows updates maybe ?...

Thank you so much, it took me a bit cause when I first ran it Fix It came back and told me it found a problem then it said it is fixed. Then I shut down and restarted my computer and the flag and X showed up again. I ran the Fix It again and that time it said that it didn't find any problems. So I ran it one more time and still it said it couldn't find anything. So I shut down again and Walla the flag showed up but no red X. The flag part is telling me that I haven't backed up. Doesn't that cost me? I haven't done it because I thought I would be charged to do so. Am I wrong about that?

Maybe I was a bit impatient about the fix and didn't give my computer a chance to remove the red X. Anyway it is gone now and I just want to thank you so much for your help. I sure do appreciate it a lot. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. "Smiles".

I get the paid version of Windows Secrets and I would guess you are talking about the article on Windows Genuine Advantage? They should be called on the carpet for making us continue to go through that over and over it is ridiculous, make us do it once and be done with it. I did not see any mention of this last patch Tuesdays updates causing any problems, they do mention the patches for IE and their importance. I have only seen on a few forums some very minor issues but none like this 98 thing. I have run this windows 98 issue by a few MS MVP's and no one has seen or hear of it happening and all want to know the outcome so please arkie62 keep us posted on what you do and your outcomes please. Use your head with this - a PC isn't a CD player, it's even better. Put any and all your CDs into the PC just once, rip them (transcribe the music files into computer files), and then play them an infinite number of times using the sound files stored on your hard drive. Either WMP or Itunes will do the rip. If the CD can be read from one PC and not the other, rip the CD on the working PC and then move the files to the other. Or, rip all the working files on the "bad" PC, and use the working PC to rip and transfer just the one non-working file. A concept that's hard for some to grasp - if you're trying to do something and it doesn't work, it's unlikely the solution is to do the same thing over and over again. Instead, try something different.

If you were working on the files prior to the update and had saved them as per normal, there shouldnt have been any file loss for just doing the update. Should that happen again which I have never experience, you could just do a system restore back a few hours to before you did the update. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tool>System restore

Windows 7 wants you to do a backup to another hard drive .. or remote hard drive. That's the backup showing not done in the action center. Backup of the Library folders usually.

I think you can turn off the action center, maybe that would stop the messages. I turn off some notices like auto update. I don't want it to update or even download without my permission.

Hi Emma,

Nice to meet you. "Smiles" I have read while doing my search on my problem with Windows Update that there were people who didn't want it automatically to run. This computer is still under warranty and they don't want me to make any changes to the updates. I had never had any problems with it until now. I understand that with some things, it is best to do it your way and that is just a preference on your part and I see nothing wrong with that. I went in and removed something last night that was running at startup and I felt it wasn't necessary, so I shut it off from the program itself.

I never set it to automatically update it was like that when I bought the computer. I would have wanted that problem fixed anyway. With it being a problem I wasn't sure how it would have affected the update with it being set the other way. (not being set automatically). That was my thinking when I wanted it fixed. It's fixed now and I am very happy about it. Thank you for your input I really appreciate it.

I do the windows update, I just want to see what they are installing. Some times there are a lot of them and I do a few at a time. Quite frankly at this point in my life on one tells me what to do, especially to my PC. LOL
