I have to keep disabling network adapter/enable to get onli

On my new thinkpad (had about 6 weeks) - every time I restart the computer I can't get on line - either with firefox or IE. I keep having to go back into the control panel, internet connection - and have my network adapter fixed. I'm not even sure if it says a network card is unplugged - or what.

But when I choose to repair, it first disables the network adapter - then somehow restores - and then I get an internet connection again. (I'm on a home network - my husband doesn't have this issue with his laptop)

I don't think this happened every time in those first few weeks, but it happened a couple of times, and this past week, every time i start the computer.

Any ideas what happened? Or how I can get it fixed so I don't have to go through this process each time I start the ocmputer and want to get online.

(not sure this is relevant - but Windows XP SP2. Could this have happened from any of the microsoft security updates? For some reason my laptop doesn't stay connected to my home network.

What is the model #, may want to reinstall the network adapter, but I need the Model # so we can find what the name of the network adapter is unless you know.

Go to the start menu, right click on my computer, select properties, then select the hardware tab. After you have done this click on device manager and scroll down to network adapters and please respond with the make and model number of your card.

I just checked - and I'm not sure which of the three things listed for my network devices is the network card:

1394 Net Adapter
intel 82566MM gigabyte network connection
intel wireless wifilink 4965AGN

I suspect the wireless card is the intel 4965AGN (is wireless card the same as the network adapter? This 4956agn is what i think my computer keeps disabling and re-enabling. Interestly, for some reason, I got connected to the internet right away when I started the laptop just now.

Hi, Thanks for the further discussion/links on this issue ! A reply I (thought I) posted last night apparently didn't show up, so I'll have to offer it again here (in my response to zep). At what point during the startup does this loop commence? I assume it must be during the initial POST when the screen is black and the writing scrolls up the screen? When you changed from 'enabled' to 'disabled' in the BIOS you did remember to click F10 to save and exit I presume? What model number and how old is this laptop? owbist, On powering up, I'll get as far as the "Windows" screen (the black screen with the multi-colored progress bar underneath the word "Windows") and then it will flicker totally blue for a fraction of a second and then it goes back to the black HP start-up screen (with the F1 and F10 options at bottom). Then the F5 screen appears (the one with all the options for how to boot up: safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. I tried both of those, but to no avail). Only disabling the SATA setting (and saving it via F10) allows me out of the loop and into a normal boot-up. Re: model #: although I don't have it in front of me at the moment, as I recall it's about 2-3 years old. A DV5000 HP laptop. I wonder why it's getting enabled? That I don't know.. zep, I can't imagine, and Matt, our computer guy, doesn't know, though he suspects some sort of power surge. But, as I wrote in my post that vanished into cyber oblivion last night, my aunt did get a new AC adapter recently. It has been working just fine for weeks. But I have noticed that the plug doesn't have a very tight fit in the computer. She sometimes has to rotate it a bit back and forth in the jack to make sure it's connecting properly. Otherwise she'll get the battery icon in the lower right of the taskbar. I wonder if toggling from battery to AC to battery and back again could send the kind of signals to the computer that would affect the SATA setting. ??? It certainly hasn't affected any other aspect of the computer or its performance that I can see. Anyway, it seems to be working okay for now. As long as it is (and as long as she doesn't really need the SATA setting to be enabled) she/we can live with it. Thanks again for the comments ! Scott

Zep - I have 3 devices in my network list: 1) 1394 net adapter 2)intel 82566mm gigabit network connection (this one I was able to get an updated driver - but on my network connections, it still shows as local area connection - "network cable unplugged,fire..." and I'm not able to click that and get the rest of the sentence. if I click it it just gives me the name of the adapter. 3) intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN The first and third ones say they are connected and firewalled. I believe that this last wireless 4965AGN is the one that has problems and gets repaired. I could be wrong about that. The LAN one I think has always been unconnected/unplugged. I don't know what that's for or if I need it. Is that my wired internet connection? Thanks. Lynn. PS - if I go through network devices and select update drivers, it only offered updated drivers for the intel 82566mm gigabit network connection. Is there any point in googling for updated driver if this route indicate no new drives exist?

I second what mizscarlett said. PTSD or even TSD is a very real thing that happens to many people, not just soldiers. Arcy- I understand why you wrote what you did, it is the common stance of the general public to abused and battered persons; I used to feel much the same. BUT....unless you have lived through it yourself and had the same crushing emotions, guilt, worthlessness and self loathing that these people have experienced from years of emotional abuse, you really are in no place to judge. It is easy to view as an outsider and say, "you should have just left", it is FAR more difficult to do when you've been, slowly over time, made to live in fear for your life and the lives of those you love or been made to believe that you are, in fact, worthless. The worst damage people like OPs husband do isn't physical, it's emotional and mental. Her mother was willing to pay for the divorce but she was so worried for her mother's safety from this lunatic that she was willing to endure additional abuse to keep her mother safe. You berating her for something she already regrets is simply blaming the victim and encourages other people to NOT come forward. Many people who are abused (not saying this is necessarily the OPs stance) state that their abuser is quite charming at first, a "catch". Slowly, over time the verbal and emotional abuse escalates but they still say, "s/he's so great, and they've never hurt me!". Then the first time comes and they are physically abused. They are so shocked that it happened and "it's never happened before" that they write it off. It happens again, a few months go by and it happens again...and again....and again. At this point it is happening at an alarming frequency but by this point, the battered person is so broken, so ashamed at not recognizing what was initially happening, that they stay silent. The victim blames themself. THEN, in worst case scenarios, they begin to actually believe what the abuser says. They believe they deserve this. They believe they messed up, believe they are worthless, believe they are at fault. Frankly, as much as I want to judge and blame someone for their past mistakes, I can NOT sit by and blame a battered person for their poor decisions regarding their abuser. It's not right and it's not fair. msgenie- you've been given some great advice already. The only thing I can add to it is that you've already given him power and control over 50 years of your life. He is gone now and you can finally live. Try to NOT let his ghost take any more of your life from you. You only get one life, one chance at this big game; make it count. A 1394 Net Adaptor Connection. ---- Is basically Win2k/XP's way of telling you that you have a Firewire interface installed in your system.

intel 82566MM gigabyte network connection.---- This is for vista I believe.

intel wireless wifilink 4965AGN.----- And you're right this is the one your using.

Lets wait and see at least we know what it is and if needed we/ you can download the latest driver from the thinkpad/ site that would be the first step in trying to resolve this issue.

I have one more question do you have an xbox in the house? it is known to cause interfere with a wireless connection sometimes.

Interesting point. I don't have an xbox - so no interference there. I have a playstation 2 in the basement - nowhere near this laptop and the router it's connected to. actually, it's usually unplugged.

What i do have is 2 tivo boxes that connect through network adapters - one in the living room (where I use my laptop) and one in the bedroom. they are wireless connected to my desktop (which has the router the laptop connects to) - and to each other. Could that be causing the interference? and why only sometimes.

One of my computers became very difficult about getting online. Nothing seemed changed or out of the ordinary. Eventually I disabled Zonealarm during a 'trial and error' session. Presto! Problem fixed. What firewall are you using Lynn?

That computer currently is using the MS firewall but I will install the free PC Tools firewall on there. Tried it yesterday on another computer and it seems fine. So I'll play for a couple of days to be sure the PC Tools firewall is good then install it on the troubled computer.

I do not know about the tivo and if it could be a problem, but it's possible -- I like the fire wall suggestion owbist brought up, esp. if it's ZA. It's hard to trouble shoot intermittent problems like this, I'm starting to think it is not the driver since it is intermittent and you have other factors going on but can't rule it out totally. We can wait for you to post back with the fire wall information that may be the first place to start, See we would want to do one thing at a time to isolate the issue. I know nothing about tivo can they connect to a separate router with out the computers involved in the connection.

I would at this point disable the fire wall no matter what one you use thanks owbist an use the windows fire wall that way we can start to rule out items one at a time..

In the mean time I'm going to see if I can find the most current rev level# for the network adapter you use so we have it on hand..

Thanks everyone. The only firewall I have is the Windows one that comes with the computer. And I already have it set up to allow access for Firefox and IE.

As for Tivo, I don't know if it's a problem, but yes it has to connect to the computer's router - for many nifty reasons. I can program my recorder from my computer (or any computer - anywhere - anytime). So I can be away for the weekend - and realize I had wanted to record something. Just get on line and set it up remotely. I can transfer shows to my computer - and from there to my daughter's ipod - or burn a DVD, etc. I really don't know if there's interference - but I need my Tivo - and again, it's no problem on my husban'd laptop when he's in the living room and getting onto our home network.

So I suspect the problem is with my computer - and not the firewall.

If I keep having trouble connecting, I'll report back.
