I have to keep disabling network adapter/enable to get onli

On my new thinkpad (had about 6 weeks) - every time I restart the computer I can't get on line - either with firefox or IE. I keep having to go back into the control panel, internet connection - and have my network adapter fixed. I'm not even sure if it says a network card is unplugged - or what.

But when I choose to repair, it first disables the network adapter - then somehow restores - and then I get an internet connection again. (I'm on a home network - my husband doesn't have this issue with his laptop)

I don't think this happened every time in those first few weeks, but it happened a couple of times, and this past week, every time i start the computer.

Any ideas what happened? Or how I can get it fixed so I don't have to go through this process each time I start the ocmputer and want to get online.

(not sure this is relevant - but Windows XP SP2. Could this have happened from any of the microsoft security updates? For some reason my laptop doesn't stay connected to my home network.

What is the model #, may want to reinstall the network adapter, but I need the Model # so we can find what the name of the network adapter is unless you know.

Go to the start menu, right click on my computer, select properties, then select the hardware tab. After you have done this click on device manager and scroll down to network adapters and please respond with the make and model number of your card.

I just checked - and I'm not sure which of the three things listed for my network devices is the network card:

1394 Net Adapter
intel 82566MM gigabyte network connection
intel wireless wifilink 4965AGN

I suspect the wireless card is the intel 4965AGN (is wireless card the same as the network adapter? This 4956agn is what i think my computer keeps disabling and re-enabling. Interestly, for some reason, I got connected to the internet right away when I started the laptop just now.

Lynn, I now see more clearly what you're trying to do. It's much like setting up a network at home. When you're sharing internet with 2 or 3 computers, you'd be setting up a router (such as a Linksys) with wireless capability. First you'd need to setup the router with an encryption. The manual for Linksys has good instruction on how to set it up. This will only allows computers that share the same encryption number to be within the network and will keep the others away. The nearby computers will see the Linksys ID but will not be able to get into the network without the encryption number. Since you're the owner, you have the choice of who to give that encryption number to once you had it set up. This number can be changed at anytime you feel a threaten nearby. I normally use the Linksys auto encryption number because it uses a lengthy combination of letters (case sensitive) and numbers which makes it difficult to hack into. What Jane explained only works if you're not setting up a network. When you set up a network, regardless of whether you're using wireless or a cable, all 3 computers can still be seen if allowed to. Each individual computer within the same network can be set up so not to allow other computers to see it. The only thing they could see is a list of computer's name within the network. Windows have a network security feature in the Control Panel that allows you to set up what you want to share and what not. For example, all 3 of you may want to share the same printer and nothing else. As far as hacking, by setting up an uncrypted router (hardware firewall), you should be pretty safe. Plus, each individual computer should also have a firewall software installed. This is the 2nd protection. A professional hackar (or whatever you call him/her) would probably not interest in your type of business to go through the trouble of hacking into your network. Think of it as your home have an alarm system but your neighbor doesn't. Guess, which home the burglar would rather break into? As for within the network, if all 3 of you trust each others enough to share the cost of internet service, I don't see a reason for worrying with one of you hacking the other one's computer. Do you? If you do however, then, it's best not to share the internet service. You may want to set up a rule to let each others know right away when one of the computer is stolen. If that ever happens, change the encryption code right away to prevent the stolen computer entering into your network. Keep in mind that the your friend's computer won't be able neither until you provide them with the new code. Someone already mentioned, it's best to always set up a password and 'lock up' (not log off) the system whenever you're walking away from it for a few minutes. I know you probably already know some of these things. I just add the info in for other readers that may need it.

I second what mizscarlett said. PTSD or even TSD is a very real thing that happens to many people, not just soldiers. Arcy- I understand why you wrote what you did, it is the common stance of the general public to abused and battered persons; I used to feel much the same. BUT....unless you have lived through it yourself and had the same crushing emotions, guilt, worthlessness and self loathing that these people have experienced from years of emotional abuse, you really are in no place to judge. It is easy to view as an outsider and say, "you should have just left", it is FAR more difficult to do when you've been, slowly over time, made to live in fear for your life and the lives of those you love or been made to believe that you are, in fact, worthless. The worst damage people like OPs husband do isn't physical, it's emotional and mental. Her mother was willing to pay for the divorce but she was so worried for her mother's safety from this lunatic that she was willing to endure additional abuse to keep her mother safe. You berating her for something she already regrets is simply blaming the victim and encourages other people to NOT come forward. Many people who are abused (not saying this is necessarily the OPs stance) state that their abuser is quite charming at first, a "catch". Slowly, over time the verbal and emotional abuse escalates but they still say, "s/he's so great, and they've never hurt me!". Then the first time comes and they are physically abused. They are so shocked that it happened and "it's never happened before" that they write it off. It happens again, a few months go by and it happens again...and again....and again. At this point it is happening at an alarming frequency but by this point, the battered person is so broken, so ashamed at not recognizing what was initially happening, that they stay silent. The victim blames themself. THEN, in worst case scenarios, they begin to actually believe what the abuser says. They believe they deserve this. I'll try to keep it short, not something I do well. The term for pattern learning, which is also affected by system performance too, is called adaptive recovery from setback. It's also something I also have no need or use for. I do use scheduled daily daytime and overnight setbacks but I got thermostats on which adaptive recovery is an option that can be turned off. I put in two new internet accessible thermostats when I did a two system equipment replacement a few years ago and I got Honeywells (on the recommendation of my HVAC contractor). I'm very happy with them. I need to do a system replacement on a second home in the next few months and I plan to get Honeywells installed there too, so that I can use one app to control both locations. I've heard that some HVAC contractors don't like the likes of Nest and Ecobee. Maybe because some of them are knuckle dragger/Luddite types and feel more comfortable sticking with brands known in the industry, I don't know. I have to say that even with my new Honeywells (the best known name in the HVAC industry and a company that manufactures many OEM branded models - for instance things like Carrier thermostats, Trane, etc) , I had to help a tech program them. The contractor's team did the wiring and of course the equipment install but, frankly, I understood the setup issues better than they did. No problem, we worked together, and the outcome was fine. If your upstairs system is vanilla - single stage gas furnace and single stage air conditioner, a system that doesn't need a communicating thermostat, not a heat pump with backup secondary or emergency heating, maybe an Ecobee or Nest might be fine. If it's other than vanilla, maybe not. And if it's installed or set up wrong, you'll have problems. I'm a person who tries to do things well, which is not always the cheapest way. I like being able to rely on the expertise of others. If you know and can afford to pay an HVAC contractor maybe a few hundred dollars (not counting the cost of the thermostat) for something a DIY person might try but screw up, have one come out to assess your situation and recommend what to use (and what they can install). Most modern thermostats do offer Wifi access and with Apple and Android apps. It shouldn't be too hard. You might even wind up having them install two if you can afford it. Do it at the same time. Your sprinkler controler sounds awesome! Good for you, you old dinosaur! You're an inspiration and excellent example for others, including younger others, of being adaptable to new things and using technology as a tool to overcome a disability. In your case, a visual disability, something everyone of Social Security age has to deal with.

A 1394 Net Adaptor Connection. ---- Is basically Win2k/XP's way of telling you that you have a Firewire interface installed in your system.

intel 82566MM gigabyte network connection.---- This is for vista I believe.

intel wireless wifilink 4965AGN.----- And you're right this is the one your using.

Lets wait and see at least we know what it is and if needed we/ you can download the latest driver from the thinkpad/ site that would be the first step in trying to resolve this issue.

I have one more question do you have an xbox in the house? it is known to cause interfere with a wireless connection sometimes.

Interesting point. I don't have an xbox - so no interference there. I have a playstation 2 in the basement - nowhere near this laptop and the router it's connected to. actually, it's usually unplugged.

What i do have is 2 tivo boxes that connect through network adapters - one in the living room (where I use my laptop) and one in the bedroom. they are wireless connected to my desktop (which has the router the laptop connects to) - and to each other. Could that be causing the interference? and why only sometimes.

One of my computers became very difficult about getting online. Nothing seemed changed or out of the ordinary. Eventually I disabled Zonealarm during a 'trial and error' session. Presto! Problem fixed. What firewall are you using Lynn?

That computer currently is using the MS firewall but I will install the free PC Tools firewall on there. Tried it yesterday on another computer and it seems fine. So I'll play for a couple of days to be sure the PC Tools firewall is good then install it on the troubled computer.

I do not know about the tivo and if it could be a problem, but it's possible -- I like the fire wall suggestion owbist brought up, esp. if it's ZA. It's hard to trouble shoot intermittent problems like this, I'm starting to think it is not the driver since it is intermittent and you have other factors going on but can't rule it out totally. We can wait for you to post back with the fire wall information that may be the first place to start, See we would want to do one thing at a time to isolate the issue. I know nothing about tivo can they connect to a separate router with out the computers involved in the connection.

I would at this point disable the fire wall no matter what one you use thanks owbist an use the windows fire wall that way we can start to rule out items one at a time..

In the mean time I'm going to see if I can find the most current rev level# for the network adapter you use so we have it on hand..

Thanks everyone. The only firewall I have is the Windows one that comes with the computer. And I already have it set up to allow access for Firefox and IE.

As for Tivo, I don't know if it's a problem, but yes it has to connect to the computer's router - for many nifty reasons. I can program my recorder from my computer (or any computer - anywhere - anytime). So I can be away for the weekend - and realize I had wanted to record something. Just get on line and set it up remotely. I can transfer shows to my computer - and from there to my daughter's ipod - or burn a DVD, etc. I really don't know if there's interference - but I need my Tivo - and again, it's no problem on my husban'd laptop when he's in the living room and getting onto our home network.

So I suspect the problem is with my computer - and not the firewall.

If I keep having trouble connecting, I'll report back.
