Default email

How do I disable MS Outlook, Outlook Express and MS Live from acting as my default email client? I do not use any of those and want gmail to open as my default. I looked in Internet Options but am given only the above choices as email.

Thanks,

Jane

Outlook-Outlook Express-Windows Live Mail are all email clients...but Gmail is not. Gmail is web-based. You use it by starting your web browser, go to gmail.com-log in and read your mail. If you choose not to read your mail in the web browser, then you will have to choose an email client (Outlook-OE-Live Mail or something else) and learn how to configure it to download and display your Gmail. The choices are yours...you just have to decide.

If you're going to use Live Mail, make sure you get the right one-there are different versions and you didn't say if you are using XP, Vista or Win7.

I've read several posts similar to this one and I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If I wanted to reply to a Craigslist email, I could do it in about 6 seconds with a few mouse clicks and not have to make any changes to the browser at all, nor would I need to install any type of a plug-in that might not be supported the next time the browser gets updated. Right-click the Craigslist email address Select Copy E-Mail Address with a left-click Open a new Tab-go to your AOL EMail Click Compose Right-click in the To: field and left--click to PASTE the email address you just copied a moment ago. What could be easier? Sometimes the problems encountered by users wanting to make everything work with one click are better solved by using what is already available to you. It's not that hard, and you just might learn something useful along the way.

malwarebytes is not an antivurus program it is an anti malware program and will find much much more than your antivirus will, there is a free version but you can also purchase it for a minmal fee which gives you lifetime protection and will enable it to do auto updates and scheduled scans. I would definitely get and use malwarebytes it is one of the top products we use on the support forums to clean the hardest infections. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.  The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt  Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply. Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. There are free antivirus programs that are available that are just as good as or in some cases better than ones you pay big bucks for, the same companies that give those free also do sell a more full featured version so they are available for sale, I prefer to support companies that will go above and beyond and provide a free version for those who can not afford to pay for a product, they certainly do not have to do that but it is an extremely helpful thing to do, the more people we can keep from getting infected the better off we all are. I personally use AVAST and find it an excellent product. People often try to push the big name products especially when they are making a profit from selling them, installing them and maintaining them. The decision should be a good informed and researched one made by the pc user.

Probably nothing to do with your computer. More likely an issue with the internet providers. Have your friend right click on a returned header then click Properties/Details/Message source. Expand that to full page for easier viewing and read down through to find out why. I suspect her ISP is blocking the server you use because Spam is leaving that server - not from you but another user.

Lynn, Are you using 'Windows XP', 'Vista', or some other operating system? You mentioned 'Superantispyware' removing "several spywares". Have you also run a full scan with your 'anti-virus' program? If not, update and run a full scan. Something else I overlooked when I read your initial post, I see you're using AOL 9.1. I'm still using AOL 9.0 SE, so there may be some changes to the way things are done in 9.1 as far as repairing the software. I'm not even sure they have the same features in 9.1 so let's forget about 'rebuilding the AOL adapter' for now. Someone else using that version of AOL will have to jump in here. If you have the 'AOL' icon down in the system tray (by the clock) you can right click that and see what options there are. System Restore is painless and if you don't get the results you want you just 'undo' the restore. If you had any kind of virus or spyware infection and you restore to a time when your machine was infected, yes, it will restore those infections, but you can always run your anti-virus and anti-spyware applications again to remove them. I can't say for certain whether or not 'system restore' will affect your bookmarks but it is always a good idea to back up anything on your computer that you cannot afford to lose or want the hastle of having to replace. There can never be enough said about the importance of backing up important data! I use Acronis True Image which makes an image of the complete hard drive, sector by sector, that will restore everything including operating system, programs, documents, pictures, data, etc. to the 'T'. This is on a second drive in my PC in case my primary drive should fail. I also have an external hard drive where I back up 'My Documents'. "I also ran ccleaner right after the updates (I thought at first that that was the problem) - should I rerun that as well?" No, running CCleaner again is not going to fix the problem, nor do I see where CCleaner would have created your problem, unless by chance, if you also used the 'Registry' feature in CCleaner, it may have removed something. Anytime you use any kind of registry cleaner it should have the option of making a backup in case things go wrong, which is exactly why most cleaners, some don't, have the backup option. Either that or create a 'system restore' point before you use it. Using a 'registry cleaner' is a hot topic. Some swear by them, others swear at them! I personally have use Macecraft 'Reg Supreme' for years with no ill effects. "There may have been an easier way to do this, but I just copied and pasted all the bookmarks I made_____". There is: Internet Explorer has an 'import/export' feature for transferring or backing up your cookies and favorites. Click on 'File' in the Menu bar at the top of the IE browser, select 'Import/Export', and follow the Wizard. You can save them to a file on your computer for retrieval later if you should need to do so using the same wizard. I made a folder called 'Backups' in the 'My Documents' folder where I store a copy of my 'cookies' and 'favorites'. In Firefox, I'm still using version 2.0.0.16, if you go to 'Bookmarks' in the Menu bar and select 'Organize bookmarks' and click on 'File', you'll find an 'Import' and 'Export' wizard. Drink some 'brave' juice and try the system restore first to see if that works. Witz

Jane,

I have been using gmail as my default mailer for a while, probably by doing what not2bright linked above. When you click on a mailto link, a new browser window opens with a blank message. Works like a charm!

I'll try that, not2bright (although I think you are more than bright!). Azinoh, I have used Outlook for many years. I don't want it coming up when I reply to a link or such. I thought there might be a way to shut it off. I don't use it anymore.

I prefer to use gmail.

Did you create a gmail account?
Are you able to access gmail via your web browser?
Have you enrolled in any other Google services (Google Groups, for example)?

Hi, Jane

Hmmm... Well, at least from the Outlook side of things, you can go to Tools > Options > Other and look for a box "Make Outlook the default program for email...." If you can find this setting in your version of Outlook, you can uncheck the box next to that entry. Maybe that will help let Gmail be accepted easier as the default program for you. ??

I have multiple gmail accounts. I can access them all through the browser (FF). When I first start the computer, a box pops up on my desktop asking me to sign in to gmail. I enter my user name and password and it says "An error has occurred..."

Maybe I have too many email accounts, although I am only using the sign in for the main account.

Not2bright, not sure where you are telling me to go. IE or Firefox? In FF, there is nothing about default email choices.

Well, I'll just keep doing what I have been doing. Probably some glitch somewhere. These computers make everything so darn complicated.

Thanks,
Jane

I expect that the biggest problem here is PEBKAC. Not knowing why you need multiple email accounts, perhaps it is unwise to have everything in one place and being dependent on 1 provider.

I allocate my email use as follows:

1 Primary account for important messages between family/friends and merchants I do business with which I access with my email client (Thunderbird) or my ISP's webmail. No matter what your email needs are, I highly recommend using your ISP for email. After all, you're paying for it and they are answerable to you vs a web email which offers it in the hope of advertising to you.

2 Accounts which collect all my junk mail which are both webmail but 1 can be downloaded if needed (the old AOL accouint). The other is Yahoo Mail.

YMMV but this is what works for me

Hi, Jane

Oh, I didn't know this error was happening when you start up the computer. I thought it was only when you tried to have Gmail's webmail open as the default email client that you got the message. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with any of Gmail's offline functions, so I can't help with that. And I'm not sure how the error message you're getting at computer start-up relates to your difficulty in having Gmail's webmail as the default email client. (I imagine that it would be possible for you to disable whatever offline Gmail feature you're using (is it the notifier or something else ?), or at least to set it so it doesn't start at computer start-up to see if that helps Gmail to open as your default client when you're online. AFAIK, the notifier is necessary for Gmail's webmail to be the default client. But perhaps the offline Gmail interferes with that ? I don't know. I'll keep looking into it.)

You could try clearing your browser's cache and specifically Gmail's cookies and restart your browser to see if that clears things up when your computer restarts.

Re: Outlook: since you were having issues with Outlook taking control as the default email client, my directions above were to Outlook itself. In Outlook's Tools > Options > Other there is a place to de-select Outlook as the default mail handler to help clear the way for Gmail to handle that.

Mikie, you did it again! I never saw that because I never looked in 'applications.' That will solve the problem...I'm sure...haven't tried it yet.

Azinoh, thanks for your suggestion. I have multiple accounts because I like different things coming in depending on importance. We are house shopping and I get over a 100+ listings each day. I keep one account for that. I shop online and like to keep all my purchases in one place; another account is personal and one for forums and Craigs List, etc.

We are in the process of moving and I don't want to get involved with ISP's as we spend time traveling and prefer to use web email. We are staying with a relative and using their wireless.

Not2bright (change that name), I never looked at Outlook for those directions. I'm thinking the problem might have to do with the multiple accounts...not sure. I also use a master password on my computer and that might be blocking. I appreciate your help.

Mikie, thanks again and I am enjoying the beautiful weather in your State. Still can't believe its in the 80's in November.
