Stupid question for vent experts - direct venting

We are building a new house and I have purchased a Monogram GE six burner propane rangetop. We are planning a custom hood fan and I have tried reading all the venting sites but cannot find any discussion re venting straight out the side of the house. Our rangetop is on an outside wall. Venting and noise is a huge concern to us as it is to everyone. Anyone who can reply to this would be so appreciated by us vent challenged people. Thanks in advance.

Yes of course you can vent directly out the side. The one caveat that I have read is - if the hood vents up, have the duct go up 2 feet before it makes a right angle out the wall.
This cuts down on turbulence and noise.

Some hoods will allow direct rear venting.

The only concern I would mention about direct venting to the side of the house is one that was especially relevant to my situation. I live in a NYC townhouse where proximity to one's neighbor tends to be closer than close. Although I had the option of side venting or rooftop venting, I chose rooftop. That's because given how close we live to each other, I just couldn't imagine it would be a neighborly thing to do to be blowing the smoke, grease and odors from my kitchen in the direction of my neighbor's house. Again, it's a particular situation and one that my not be relevant to you at all.

Thanks for your input, Renovator8. That fireplace has been through a few transitions. It was first an Isokern masonry like fireplace but to save some money we changed it to a b-vent on the plans. Once we placed the house on the lot, it became apparent that the b-vent pipe would be viewable from the street, and would have to be fairly high due to the slope of the roof. The initial hope was to hide the b/vent pipe from view behind the upstairs Isokern chimney, but the house is oriented in a way that it is viewable on approach, even though not seen in the front or back yard. We then changed to an direct vent. The whole reason for the direct vent was to not vent to the roof, so I would like to avoid that. We have a couple of options with the Montebello like running them behind a bookshelf in the dead space and then over a boxed bay bumpout, but the pipe is so big it may make it not feasible. I don't think we have enough rise available to run it over the master bedroom tray ceiling above, unfortunately, because that will vent out the side of a house above the a/c in a very inconspicuous place.

formulaross, thanks for the info. There have been so many details and decisions involved with this project (doubling the family room by adding a sunroom, new walls, new lighting, new floor, new connection to the kitchen, etc. etc. etc.), and I sometimes find myself blocked for days on end by some silly little detail. Luckily, we also finally found a finish carpenter who understands what needs to be done and is coming by next week to build a box around the fireplace that will then be tiled. Your furnace would not run properly if the pipes were not sized properly. Is your furnace giving you problems? The installation manual will have a sizing chart in it. Every manufacturer is different. For the brand that I install, the size seems right.

It shouldn't be extended outside since it may freeze and cause the unit to stop working. It may be relocated to another area from inside and re-terminated outside. Venting codes need to be followed with certain dimensions adhere to from openings, doors and windows. It can never be vented into the chimney however, many times as long as no other appliances or fireplaces use the chimney; it can be used as a chaseway for the piping out the top.

We go up about 18 inches and out the side wall with our Kobe. It works very good. Only neighbors we effect are the bears, deer, bobcat, fox etc; they seem to like it.

Thank you very much to everyone. Eandhl it is interesting that you have Kobe. We were going to get that system because of its quietness and all the great things being said about it on this site. But now we are having second thoughts because my husband found a site that said Kobe has oil drains or cans instead of screens that go in the dishwasher. Please tell me how it works and if this is true and if this is a bad deal or not. Thanks so much.

Kobe has all three vent systems, baffle filter, mesh filter or oil cups. If you are doing a wood hood, they have 2 systems 1 with baffle filters and a remote control and the less expensive mesh filter unit, and yes they are the quietest systems available and still give you great power.

Kobe is not the most quiet. The Fantech FKD 10XL at 1266 CFM produces less decibels than the Kobe 1000 CFM. An inline centrifugal fan will produce much less noise than a dual squirrel cage blower.

We got a 1200 CFM Prestige for our 36" American Range. Our code allows for venting right out the side of the building, not all the way to the roof.
I sort of take exception with Alexr. I too heard the 2 feet over the hood to cut down on noise but when I went to get some independent verification I couldn't find any. The manufacturers of several brands and some very good sales people had not hear of this.
Absolutely quietest installation is a roof mounted fan I've been told but have never heard one.

Unfortunately we had to make the through the roof decision yesterday because today the cedar shake roof went on and there is no turning back now. We are going out the side of the house, for better or for worse. Today I took my husband to an appliance store in hopes that we would be looking at washers and dryers. What else did the store sell? Vent a Hood. The salesman got hold of my DH and you know the ending. Yes, my DH loves Vent a Hood. So right now I am showing him all the information on this site re how noisy it is, etc. but I am losing the case. Help. Any opinions out there would be greatly appreciated.
