Possibly dumb question on direct-vent FP

Susan_StM

We purchased a nice Mendota direct-vent FP which has been installed and hooked up by the propane folks. Now we are interviewing finish carpenters to build the hearth, surround, and mantel.

Now for my possibly dumb question. The doc and clearance specs that came with the FP are confusing me when I try to sketch out what we are looking to have built.

When you build the "box" to surround the FP unit, do you close the unit in (in other words, enclose the unit with trim---tile, wood---that is smaller than the unit), or are you supposed to leave the opening large enough to potentially pull out the unit and replace it if necessary?

Thanks everyone/Susan
