Thunder Bay arrives at my door with a CLAP. That would be me...clapping my thanks to Chancesmom (Janet).

It is such a cool feeling to get a package from another country and did I get the most amazing package.

My handmade item is this bracelet.

I wish I could get a picture with it on (I tried!). It fits me perfectly (I have small wrists and bracelets usually dangle too much - this one fits almost like a watch - perfect). But get this? Janet said this is her first piece! I think she should quit her day job. Her sister helped (thank you!). I have to bring out some of my jewelry to show how much this is me. I love turquoise and blue and shades of brown and bronze are my favorite combination to wear. I really feel special receiving Janet's first piece. Did I hit the lotto or something?

Next is this beautiful piece of pottery from one of Janet's favorite potters in Thunder Bay. The tone and coloring fit my home to a "T". I don't have anything from any potter anywhere! I will truly treasure this - and use it often! She shared this recipe which I want to share with you.

Elephant in a Bowl

3 cloves of elephant garlic, chopped quite fine

8 ounces of cream cheese

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack

1 can diced green chiles

Combine in bowl. Pour into crock or casserole. heat @ 350 degrees for about 40 minutes until brown around edges and bubbly. Spread on crackers or bread.

The cookbook is Marcella's Italian Kitchen by Marcella Hazan. I keep hearing about this cookbook lately! I was checking it out when shopping for my partner and didn't someone else just receive this? I can't wait to read this. Janet says it is like she is there next to you in the kitchen and I absolutely love making Italian meals.

This is by Roy Thomas, an Ahnisnabae-artist. Janet thought the food as nurturer was an appropriate theme and so do it. I am framing this for my kitchen.

Janet, you really touched my heart. I have said this before on this forum and I will say it again. When you talk about food you are talking about life. It is so much fun to see how we can live so far away and have so much in common. Thank you, my friend!

I love the whole package but that dish is truly exceptional. I love the bracelet as well, it even matches the pottery piece. maggie, you really are lucky. the boxes in this swap have been so wonderful.

What an honor to receive Janet's first piece of jewelry. It is truly a treasure. I love the bowl. The potter must be very talented to have made that. Janet was so thoughtful to include a recipe. Marcella Hazen is terrific. You will have fun with that cookbook.

sekjr, "Any comments on tilling green manure with a mid-tine tiller would be appreciated." I planted Winter Rye as a green manure crop in my Fort Worth garden many years ago, on the advice of an article by the Tarrant County Agent in the Fort Worth Star Telegram. It grew mightily in the mild Texas winter and, when it it came time to till it under in the early Spring, I had an enormous amount of green material in the garden. I started to till it with Slasher Tines on my Merry Tiller (the top of the line triple-reduction dual V-belt model back then was called the "Exporter") and I was in for a rude shock. The individual plants of Winter Rye bordered on huge, both above ground and below ground. The tiller had no trouble turning the tines, (I had already added enough sand and organic matter to get a decent sandy loam) but the Slasher tines did not cut through the fibrous root bundles. Cutting through them would have been almost like cutting through a thick hemp rope. The tiller would uproot the plants and turn them over and over in the soil without slicing through them. I switched to my Bolo tines (nice for general cultivation and self-sharpening) and their slanted tine design was better at uprooting and then releasing the Winter Rye plants to the side of the tiller. The plants tended to slide off of the slanted tines. But the Merry Tiller was not turning that Winter Rye under. It was just digging it up with impressively large rootballs. I wound up piling the big plants up in a large pile in the corner of the garden and that pile rotted fairly fast that Spring to produce an impressive amount of compost that I wound up side dressing my corn with. (The Silver Queen corn grew over 10 feet tall with legendary "stove wood sized" ears.) In order to turn under that crop of mature Winter Rye, I would have needed a good one-bottom moldboard plow with a large-sized self-sharpening blade. I was raised on a farm, and developed a healthy respect for what a good moldboard plow can do. It can wrap under some insanely tall weeds and leave nothing but a few stubs poking out. The buried weeds rot rapidly. "How well do you think the Honda would do tilling in rye grass in each spring?" It's a good tiller (I like its adjustable handle), but I don't think it would be any better than the Merry Tiller with rye grass. The Merry Tillers have available special-purpose tines, like the Bolo Tines, that could give them an advantage, but I think rye grass can be too tough to deal with either tiller if it gets too mature. I would be curious how well a powerful high-RPM rear-tined tiller could handle mature Winter Rye. Its tines would need to be razor sharp. My Dad had good luck with Hairy Vetch as a green manure crop, and a rotary tiller can cut through its stems well enough, but regardless of how well you turn it under, enough seeds will have formed, or not germinated yet from your original planting, for it to become a potential weed. It is a rather nice looking plant and, as a legume, it is good for the soil. Some people have suggested Winter Wheat as a green manure, but after my experience with Winter Rye, I would be hesitant to try it. If you do try one of those, be sure to turn it under before the plants get too mature. And if I were choosing between a Merry Tiller Suburban and a Honda FC600, I might very well pick the Honda for its adjustable handle. The Honda's tines look more like Merry Tiller's bolo tines than Merry's massive slasher tines, and the Suburban is no International. ZM

I will tell you one dry he!! hole and that is west of I-75 and south of downtown St. Pete to about central Sarasota County. I live in southern ST. Pete near the skyway. It has been dry and then drier for years, not just 2008 or 2007 but years. We can see the storms north towards Gandy in NE ST. Pete in the summer but they don't hit the southeastern pinellas point area. You can see the storms before they hit the bay over in Ruskin and Parrish but they fade before they cross the Tampa Bay. This drought is nothing new but is getting worse. Year after year the central gulf coast proper is drying up. Last year, the east coast which always gets more rainy anyway was flooded out by tropical storm Faye, in fact I think almost all of the state got rain from this soggy storm. Not southern Pinellas or western Manatee, not a drop. Friend and family would say we see all the flooding going on from Faye in Florida. In August Tampa can get 2" of storm rains a few times a week and if my rain guage is lucky maybe a quarter inch for the entire week...... Not here not a drop. It rains in south Florida, east Florida and north towards Pasco and inland. All of the state is in a drought but I can tell you that all are far more wet then southern Pinellas and western Manatee have been any year. If a big cold front with a squall is moving towards the coast from the Gulf you can watch the radar as the echo's all dry up before southern Pinellas gets anything. Just a drizzle or clouds. My rain guage hasn't registered 1" of rain so far for all of 2009, and I have a couple set up in case one malfunctions. This is a desert however many succulents can't tolerate the high humidity or we would but Phoenix to shame.

Well, I think you have stumbled onto something here, Antss, because, as near as I can determine, "failure to pump enough money into their system" because they couldn't "maintain margins" is very much a description of every business failure in history. So you are batting 1000. The question is why didn't Maytag have enough money coming in? Or was it too much going out? Whatever. Maytag was a billion in debt, losing money on the sale of unprofitable subsidiaries, saddled with underperforming manufacturing facilities, and had bet the farm on a machine that proved to be a dog that landed them in court and into a class action settlement that included buying customers brand new 1000 dollar washers. They lost the battle to Whirlpool Bauchnect and the Neptune is what lost them the battle. Also, you are taking my sarcasm a bit too literally. I did not mean to imply that Miele is the ONLY manufacturer engaging in the practice of retail price maintenance, but it certainly is not a commonplace practice at this juncture. How do I know this? I, and every other shopper in the country can still successfully price shop and encounter deltas in pricing across the spectrum of retailers for the vast majority of goods from artichokes to Veblen-class commodities. Including Rolex watches. You CAN price shop those, I am afraid. And your ability to frame an analogy needs some work, Antss. Miele is NOT the guy at the fleamarket. Miele is the guy who makes whatever it is the guy at the fleamarket sells. Nobody is claiming that the guy who makes the stuff should not charge exactly what he wants to charge. Nobody is claiming that the guy at the fleamarket should not charge exactly what HE wants. And that is the point. Because what Miele is doing is making the stuff, charging what it wants for it, but then telling the guy at the fleamarket what HE can sell it for, threatening his supply if he does not. If Miele wants to keep its prices high then they are perfectly free to charge whatever they wish for their products through their wholesale system. That is not what they are doing. They are preventing retailers from selling in accordance with what THEIR market realities are. Resulting in near homgeneity of price across every outlet. Now, in this discussion I HAVE NOT introduced other, previously adjudged legal forms of restraint of trade. Territories, Dealership networks, franchise agreements, all are examples of restraint of trade that have been found legal, for good or bad. I have not said word one about this. Your tossing it in is a strawman and a time waster. Price maintenance is the subject. It was previously illegal, has now been found to be POSSIBLY legal. It remains to be seen whether Congress will address this, but I have a feeling we are going to be finding out because the sleeping titans are starting to get pissed. Ebay being one, One more thing: "Health reform" was only the most minimal attempt at regulation of the insurance market. The rest of the world has shown the USA how it should be done in order to save the most lives for far less cost. We did not do that. All the health care reform bill is is an attempt to begin to regulate a market in anarchy where insurers could offload risk at will and cherry-pick the market, which is fine, unless it is you or your wife or your kid getting the recision letter. Here's the good thing about the health care bill: It can be fixed if parts don't work. This is in contrast to leaving things as they were, sitting on your hands, and refusing to address real problems. Or imagining that letting everybody do exactly what they want will fix everything magically, which is the Laissez Fairest's answer to every economic dilemma.

Jam: The Lugano floor by DuChateau was wonderful! It hid dents and dog scratches and the color was exactly what I loved...and it was a great price! If you are fine without sand-in-place flooring (expensive!), then you should go ahead with this flooring. I am definitely going to have exactly the same brand/color when we re-do our new house in April. It got raves from relatives and friends, and while that certainly wouldn't be my deciding factor whether people thought it was beautiful, the fact that it was so darned great for our common area IS the most important thing. The variation in color didn't bother me...as you saw from the pictures, once installed they blended pretty well. Admittedly I did "throw out" three boards that were too dark. During install the workers put one in and immediately I saw it and said, "Not that one!". The rest were all good. I did find another oak flooring that came close to the color I wanted--it was a white oak with an oil finish but was more than twice the price. Since I had a 42 x 22 ft room, that added up pretty quickly and I opted against it. I think it was a custom stain too. They also needed 3x the amount of time to install since it was not engineered, but full wood. I can look back in my files and see what the name of that company was if you are interested. We didn't have the budget, but you might.

Maggie, I love that crockpot, such deep rich colours! I'm sure you'll find many uses for that. Can't wait to see a recipe from that cookbook. And very nice colours in the bracelet!

Oh Maggie I am so glad you liked everything. I so sweated over the bracelet, thought maybe it was too personal, but you mentioned you liked eclectic, funky stuff, so I thought I would try it! And then I sweated the size, my sister and I have small wrists too, and we kept second guessing ourselves. I can't believe you don't have any pottery.....it is very versatile, hope you get lots of use out of it.

You were fun to research and buy (and make) for, enjoy it all!

Great package, Janet. Beautiful bracelet! Marcella Hazan, great choice for a cookbook. I use her roasted chicken recipe all the time with an adaption or two, we changed the name to "Lemon up the butt" chicken! Her cookbooks are excellent! The pottery crock is so nice! Everything is lovely - even the colors in the cookbook cover work with your home, Maggie. The baked cheese recipe does sound like a perfect, easy, dish to try during some laid back weekend time today or tomorrow. And I'll be watching for the recipe you share from the cookbook.

This is another one I was SURE I had posted too! Anyway, I remember what I wanted to say:

Love the bracelet and would wear it myself! I especially love the covered crock and need to get myself some covered bowls like that. I'm always improving stupid lids for the bowls I have to keep things warm - that lid is just gorgeous!

I also love the card, and I collect native Canadian art and have some that is somewhat similar in style to that. It looks like you could frame it.

The cookbook will be great also - although I know the author only by reputation. It's hard to go wrong with Italian cuisine.
