Which version of M. Office?

I have WINXP, and need Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint. Which version do most other people use at work and home? (More interested in being compatible with the workplace, so the most usable version for "most" workplaces is the goal.) I found Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Full Version for a decent price, but before I buy, I wanted to ask the experts!

For your needs Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Full Version would probably be best.
Office 2007 is great but most work places use '97-'03 versions.
With 2007 you'd have to save your documents as '97-'03 .doc file extension for them to open in older versions because 2007 saves as .docx file extension.

I had terrible trouble with Office 2003. It kept hanging all the time, just for starters, and there were numerous other problems with it as well. I had to do a complete HDD cleanup and reinstall of Windows to get rid of it - now am perfectly happy with Office XP - at home, and in the office.

I haven't tried Office 2007 - I'll wait until they've ironed out any glitches before giving it a go!

Ravencajun, it did confirm that I had updated after I installed it. Maybe I'm not explaining this right. Before I upgraded, when I opened Firefox I'd get the picture of the fox circling the earth, underneath that would be Google, then a blank space to type in a search and that was all. Now I get that, plus underneath either "Love Firefox? Want to help make our next version even better?" or "Using Firefox on several computers? Now you can synchronize your add-ons across them all. Find out how to activate Sync." along with the box that says "restore previous session." I'd just like to have the page like it was before. Am I making sense?

Here's a rendering our architect had done for us early in the redesign phase. However, the patio on the upstairs was missing and the supporting columns etc. Aside from those differences and obviously the stair case, the overall look is quite close. With the stairway relocated, the windows on the ground floor to the bottom right in the garage are now visible. The area directly above that is the master bath and so on. Per my previous post, the double front doors were changed out after I'd posted this up. On the ground floor, the two windows in the center are history. And although it's hard to visualize it in the conceptual, the ceilings are 10' from the ground floor on up. It's a tall house. In the end we made the final revisions and submitted those for drawings based upon the conceptual we had done as it fit our need with a few tweaks mostly on the interior. What my bride didn't care for was that we'd walk up the stairs facing a wall, then turn to the left to walk 20' give or take to the front door. Based on this rendering and maintaining the same general design from day one from the same architect, we moved forward and ended up where we are. We just didn't "toss this together" so to speak. Our architect put a fair amount of thought into the process the end results in our opinion we are pleased with. We differed somewhat on the interior layout of a couple of rooms but that's all good. The vast majority of the interior of the house replicates what was done from day one which was perfect and we love it. Thus the reason we kept it just like it was. He did an amazing job! When the day is done, we're writing the check to the mortgage company so we'll build accordingly. Like I said back at the start of the thread, everyone has their own opinions and I respect that. Some folks may think what they've designed and are building is the absolute best design in the world and I'm happy for them. On the flip side, I wouldn't give them a dime for it. Again, my opinion and while it doesn't suit me we all have varied tastes. Thank goodness or we'd be in a real mess!

Patricia, people have been using candelabra style chandeliers forever. It’s a strange criticism to say that it lights the ceiling not the table. I don’t have this light, but mine also has candle style bulbs, and I have no problem with lighting. Most of us have other sources of lighting as well, such as recessed lights on dimmers and a table lamp on a buffet, so we can control the mood of the room. And the fact is that most of our consumer goods are imported these days, for better or worse. shrug

Thanks much, Randy. I will go with 2003.

Daisy, I have WinXP Pro on my home computer, so hopefully I won't have any problems. I'll back up prior to installation, just in case.

Micro$oft has made huge improvements in all of the suites applications with Office 2007. They have better interfaces and work together a bit better than they have in the past. It may not be up to Adobes success with their CS3 suite, but it is vastly improved over previous incarnations.

In addition, the interface is more intuitive, therefore user friendly. It is backwards compatible with all previous versions so if you want to save in '97 format, you can.

Weed unless you are emotionaly attached to Office or some type of requirement mandates it, please consider Open Office Suite. It's free and for me so far it has been totally compatible with Office. I publish at work using Office and have the freedom to work at home, and vice versa.

Since it is free maybe a test drive could be in order.

klaa2, I prefer to wait the typical 3 years until Microsoft fixes all the bugs in their latest release ;) (Seriously, I don't understand why a multi-gazillion company can't put out a product that works the FIRST time.)

I have Open Office, on your previous recommendation. I like it, but don't love it. The commands are different enough that I have to use Help too often to figure out how to do something. (primarily in excel.) I guess I'm an old dog that's having issues with new tricks ;)
