does your dw damage the dishes?

We recently bought an Asko XXL dishwasher. We haven't owned a dishwasher before, and we are quite concerned about its effects on our dishes. We know to wash the screen-printed pint glasses by hand, but the plates are getting damaged too.

We know that our water is very soft (the city says 0.3) and the manual says to use powdered detergent. From reading these forums, we decided to try the biokleen dish powder. From the manual and water softness, we know to use a small amount-- the manual says 1 Tbsp, which we started with, and then in subsequent loads we used closer to 1 heaping tsp. We also have been running the dw on either 'delicate' or 'quick' cycles to try to minimize damage.

Nonetheless, the impact on our dishes (Noritake colorwave- graphite) is immediately evident after 1 wash cycle, and quite significant after 2 or 3. The face of the plates seems ok so far, but the colored back changes from a smooth texture to a rougher texture and fades in color. We are quite dismayed as we love these dishes, plus, if you're not going to put the plates and bowls in the dw, what do you put in?! And, we wonder what might not be evident now-- what will happen to these and the other dishes after 50 or 100 or more cycles? Is there something we can do by using a different detergent, changing the cycle, or etc.?

What has been your experience? We would love some advice! Thanks!
