Screen Not Going Into Sleep Mode

Recently, I took my computer to the shop for some work. Only the tower was taken to the shop. I brought it home and hooked everything up. The computer runs fine, but I have noticed that the screen does not go into the "Sleep Mode". I am not sure that is the proper terminology. When the computer is left running.....with no activity, the screen used to go black. Now it does not.

Does anyone know if there is a setting on my computer that I can look into....to bring it back to its original configuration?

you either had a screensaver set to go to black or you had the power settings set to turn the monitor off after a certain time of no activity.

To check your screen saver settings right click on the desktop and select properties then screensaver tab and see what it is set on.
for power settings Start> control panel> power options> power schemes tab> turn monitor off and use the drop down tab to select a time or never and then apply ok.

Ravencajun, I got to the power schemes tab. In the drop down area.....it is entirely blue. If I click the down arrow, there is nothing there. I do not see "never".....and the Apply button is greyed out.

What do you recommend that I do now?

Thanks for that tip, David! I googled sod webworms, and found a site or two that explained/described them and had some suggestions for how to identify if you have them: http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/sheets/sodwebworm.html. I first went around and looked closely at the grass/soil, but could not find the signs they said to look for. I then did the soapy water test, but didn't see any of the caterpillars (larvae) come to the surface. I did see one adult moth, but they say that doesn't necessarily mean you have the caterpillars as the moths will fly quite some distance. I then took my hand spade/fork and chopped into some various areas to look under the grass about an inch or so, to see if I saw any grubs, caterpillars, etc. that could be the cause. But only found some ants and earwigs. I don't think either of those could cause damage to the lawn. So I am still at a loss, but will continue to look for any signs of the webworms or grubs. Or I may try to find some of the biological bacteria the sites talk about for killing the larvae and treat it anyway. The sites also mention types of grasses that are more resistant to the webworms (types of ryegrass and fescue). So possibly overseeding this fall with these or other hardier grass(like the Reveille blend that Amester mentioned, or others in the thread you linked to David) may be an answer. I am interested in the EZ Wet and Field Magic that Bob_In_Colorado has posted about and may try some of that - for a smaller sized area, though, as this much lawn area has proven to me to be too expensive to maintain (both with $$ on water, and time!).

I had that no sleep problem not too long ago on vista - saw a note in error log srefering to a usb device interfering.. turned off allow entering sleep to the particular usb in device mgr properties. Windows sometimes tells things in your error logs, and other things are easy to search.

Your husband may well be able to rebuild this computer. However it would be best to ensure that the issue is with the motherboard and not some other component. What if you buy the board for $100 after being absolutely sure it is the same and all the current components are compatible but the computer still does not work. Returning good parts is not an accepted way with computer stores. The chances of finding a 6 year old motherboard are slim at best, current boards will not accept those older parts probably. Somewhere on that board is a model number and revision number to make the search easier. Most importantly you cannot use your current XP operating system so you need to buy another one, another $100 plus gone and for an operating system 2 steps behind the times. Your current XP is tied to the specific motherboard it was installed on with factory built computers. You will need to ensure you either have all the CDs that came with the computer so that all the drivers are available or that you can find them for free online. The processor will need cleaning once removed and it will require Arctic Silver or equal quality paste to re-seat the heatsink on the processor. This bit is the most difficult or frightening apart from deciding on what parts are compatible. Do the math then take a look at today's computers for pricing. Also if hubby feels good about it check components to self build, it can be a very gratifying experience once all the parts are determined and compatible with each other. You likely will only be able to salvage the hard drive from the existing machine if you build new.

Right click the desktop, properties - screen saver tab - click the power button - mine is set to always on, then turn off monitor in 20 mins, the rest say never. Click apply, then ok. I have nothing checked on the hibernation tab and no screensaver. See if that helps.

in that same area at the top part it has a place to choose your power scheme, is yours set to home/office desk if not hit the drop down arrow and select that option from the list then save as. Do you now have the other options for monitor etc?

Is this an xp or vista machine?

Ravencajun, I am running XP. There are four tabs: Power Schemes, Advanced, Hibernate, and UPS. On the Power Schemes Tab, there is a drop down box for "Power Schemes". It is blank. If I hit the drop down arrow, it gives no choices. If I go to the Hibernate tab, "enable hibernation" is checked.

Any suggestions? I can just turn off my computer or turn off my monitor. That is not too much trouble.....but I would like to find out the problem.

on that page in the above mentioned area you do not see the same thing they show in the picture?
If you do not show any of those then you need to go to kellys corner and do a reg edit, very easy to do and the directions are right up at the top of page. You need to go to this link I give then scroll down to #204 look on the RIGHT side column there you will see Restore Power Schemes/Configurations, that is the one you want to click. Follow the directions given for how to import it into your registry.
"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit"
when the page opens after you click on that item copy the entire page from top to bottom to save.
