Computer won't stay in sleep mode

I have a Dell Dimension C521. From the moment I first got it, I have not been able to keep it in sleep mode. It goes on and off every few minutes and if left alone, will eventually cause the screen to be frozen with multi colored vertical lines, requiring me to turn the machine off manually. I called CS immediately the first time it happened, and they didn't seem to understand what I was describing. Not surprisingly, I couldn't understand them either! My question is this: Is this something I can fix myself with some sort of adjustment? I am not very literate when it comes to computers, so if I can do this myself, I need simple instructions!! I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me! TIA

You might look at the MultiMedia settings on your power plan and if not set, set to allow computer to sleep.

To get there on my vista its;
Control Panel / Power
Change Advanced power settings
MultiMedia

Perhaps look through all the settings there and you possibly may see something that you realize 'might' be the culprit.

Hi, As mikie stated above, go to your power settings in the control panel. In Vista, I have several options on the left of the window. Scroll down to "Change when the computer sleeps." Click. Then look for your sleep option. You can set this option to your liking. Don't understand it completely. Glad this topic came up. I learn something new everyday here!

When Grieco was alive he and Apache would fight over the cat womit. They wouldn't event let the poor cat get it out of his/her mouth. As soon as one of the cats started making the pre-womit sound they would dash over to him/her and put their mouths next to them. At times it seemed like a dinosaur fight to see who would win the grand prize. Ever since Grieco died Apache looks at me like "yeah, right you expect me to eat what? That game isn't fun anymore." On the other hand. In my old house my shower was in my unfinished basement. One day I stepped out of the shower onto something slimy that popped. I knew it couldn't have been womit because womit doesn't pop. Once I put on my glasses and looked down I discovered I had stepped on a huge slug. The poor thing. I popped him. A slug. A slimy slippery slug. I had to get back into the shower because I had slug guts and slime all over the bottom of my foot. Of course there was nobody to clean up the darn squished slug, and my womit once I realized the reality of what I had just done. What kind of work did the computer shop do for you? By accident, because of my lack of knowledge, I did a Destructive Recovery when I was stuck on a black screen with white lettering I couldn't get out of. It brought me back to day one with problems that were fixed via Gateway phone support which is no longer. One being not able to do windows updates and a shut down time problem. They were supposed to see if they could fix that and do all updates for windows and the drivers. The computer (Win XPPRO) was brought in to find the cause of a sound that just started happening like a whirring speed up then down then steady starting after the computer is on for 7 minutes. They said the heat sync fan/fans are OK and unplugged my floppy drive thinking it was that when the floppy had been known to make a short noise when I first used it when I bought the computer back in 2004 but hadn't since. A noise like it may have been trying to read? That was not the noise I meant. Also is it possible the tech installed a new video card and disabled the onboard video in the BIOS? In this case you should see a different video connection lower down the rear of the tower which you would need to connect to. Is that the socket I plug my monitor into as I noticed I could not push it in all the way to hide the silver part I thought did before? Then screw each side tight. Is that it? If so, I bet they did but WHY? Before I brought it in, everything worked fine except because of the Recovery two problems came back that had been corrected by Gateway I wanted fixed again and I was concerned about a noise that recently appeared, me thinking it was my HD or the sync fan.

I had that no sleep problem not too long ago on vista - saw a note in error log srefering to a usb device interfering.. turned off allow entering sleep to the particular usb in device mgr properties. Windows sometimes tells things in your error logs, and other things are easy to search.

I read ghostlyvision's link and tried out the suggestion around 2 weeks ago. I pushed in one of the buttons. I had already pushed in all of them, in every combination, at least 100 times, but this time it seemed to work and I have no idea why. 2 weeks of the stove working like it's supposed to. If it keeps working, I will never touch any of the buttons again. I can just use the clock on the tv or the computer instead. The kitchen needs to be gutted. It makes no sense to bring in a brand new stove when I haven't even started gutting it (I have to live in this apartment for now) and haven't even started thinking about what to do with the kitchen. Otherwise I would consider buying a new stove. But this one works great, when it works.

It's a little complex because two or more controlling software's might be trying to control the machine's behavior.

First educate yourself about what brings it out of sleep mode.
I know that the modem can (by a phone call coming in the comptuer
can be woken up so as to take the call be it a fax or internet)

Since dialup is dead to most people know that the network card
can work the same way. So turn off the 'wake upon lan" or similar setting that means this: When the LAN (network card) gets
a request to transfer data it wakes up the computer. You can
shut this off but where?

It can be set in many places. The bios might have a setting.
Windows might have a setting for it. And any software for the
network card itself could have a setting. (This is often part of
the Windows setting section)

Go poke and search these bits first. Without knowing the network
and modem cards are not going to wake up the computer you
are wasting time. Verify they aren't at fault first. I'll check back in a few days.
