Everyday dishes - china vs porcelain
Comments (22)Even china that is "microwave safe" can show crazing after repeated use. We put our Gien dishes into the microwave but the crazing is starting to show so I hauled out some old glass plates and we're using those now. Or paper. Before I bought any china that I thought I would use in the micro, I'd buy a piece, put some water in it and test it. Zap it on high for 1 minute and see if the piece feels hot. If it does, it will be ok but have a shorter life. The cooler china stays, the longer it will live. All dishes are made from some type of clay. Stoneware -- anything that looks brown/beige when chipped -- has a high mineral content -- which means metal particles that heat up in the wave. Porcelain and china have less, but always good to test first. Re: Crate & Barrel. I bought a set of dishes there 5 years ago and they still have the same ones. I can still add any pieces. Some of their stuff is trendy; some is staple. Not everything goes away. I personally like to buy dishes in house sales or auctions. That way you don't pay "retail" whether you shop at Crate or Penneys. Waay cheaper. Added a link to an extensive list of tableware sources on Atticmag; some basic; some discount; some simply droolworthy Here is a link that might be useful: Tableware Sources...See MoreEveryday Dishes
Comments (47)No Green Thumb - I think the thread was my post from last summer but it is not coming up in a search. I was in the market for a new set after using my Phalzgraf (sp) for 18 years. It held up very well but was showing cracks in the finish and marks from knives. I was researching the difference between stoneware, porcelain and bone china. I also wanted something durable yet not too heavy. I looked at Wedgewood, Mikasa, Crate & Barrel and many more. I ended up purchasing the Crate & Barrel bone china in a simple white pattern (Halo, I believe). I love it. It has not chipped at all (and I have granite counters), it goes from casual to formal use and it fits very nicely in the dishwasher. Many of the plates from some lines were so big and "curved" that it would be tough to fit them into the dishwasher next to each other. One tip if you do Crate & Barrel. Register on-line for the items with an end date specified. About a week or two after the date they will send you a "Complete the registry" coupon for 10% off. I purchased a place setting to test at home and then registered for my birthday. I then bought the set after the coupon arrived. The salesperson was wonderful and even said I could add to the registry before using the coupon that day in case I saw something in the store....See MoreEveryday dishes?
Comments (34)I had beautiful everyday china, that I sold, during one of the many moves while I was married. I used the china my mother in law put Jerry's initials on, back in her china painting days, instead for every day dishes then. After the divorce I no longer wanted to keep those dishes. First I used a set from my friend, stoneware. It was really to heavy for my liking. Another friend of mine has Corelle. I always liked the light weight of them. I searched, and searched, and found the all white, (winterwhite) online last year through walmart, for half price the day after Thanksgiving. I ordered two sets. and two sets of bowls. I LOVE them. Nice and light weight, and I bought some soup plates at walmart later to complete my set for me. :) Oh, yeah, the sets I bought at that Thanksgiving, had stoneware mugs made in China, I gave them away. Didn't need any mugs anyway. :) You might want to wait for a sale during TG? Moni...See Moreyour everyday dishes
Comments (25)My every day dishes are many different patterns. I live alone and love love love dishes so I have pink cabbage leaf shaped plates, Mary Engelbert white with black rim with red cherry design; pine cone pattern dinner plates, amber sandwich glass dinner plates, hull brown dip pattern set with many many serving pieces. Also have two sets of soup/cereal restaurant dishes from shenango china. I could go on but I guess you get the idea. Im a dishaholic. Because I live alone I don't have a full set of everyday dishes- - - mostly just dinner plates or luncheon size plates. I do have three full sets for when I need them....See Morelindac
