Blue screen - stop error - memory dump

I have no warranty left on my computer, so tech support is out. I have a 18 month old Dell Inspiron 1505 laptop with Windows XP. The past few weeks, 2-3 times a day I get the dreaded blue screen of death telling me I have a stop error, physical memory dump. It says try changing video adapters, disable BIOS memory caching or shadowing. Stop 0x0000008E and other error messages. It tells me to uninstall the new drivers, I haven't installed ANY new drivers. I don't know how!

Computer has also been running slow. I run virus programs, disk clean up, defragmenter won't work as it tells me that Chkdsk is scheduled to run. Please run Chkdsk /f. I don't know what this is or how to run it?

I've also had problems with my CD rom working off and on. It will spin, but my computer only recognizes it about half the time.

ANY help for me at all??? TIA!!!
