I also talked to my ISP since and they said it was a known issue relating to some ISP address migration issue. At least I can relax about some stealth infection. And azinoh, thanks for the thought about security, but I'm always fully secured, and no one outside the network in my house has access to my router.

It is my experience that AVG does a very short scan on startup, exactly as it should. Then by default it is set to do a full scan at 8 a.m. The full scan time can be adjusted to suit the user, mine was always set to 3 a.m. because I knew I would not be at the computer at that hour. I am unsure about why anyone would want to defeat the purpose of the program to save a mere 10 to 15 seconds on a reasonably fast machine. Just a few days ago I installed AVG on a PII with 64 megs of RAM and Win98 for a lady and it only took 20 seconds for the initial scan every time I started the computer.

Norton is terrible about making problems for other antivirus programs if it is not fully removed and their specific removal tool used, lots of it is left behind and can conflict with other AV programs and other things. She should NEVER use a pc online with out updated active antivirus programs on it, No doubt it has some multiple types of infection on it by now. Definitely needs to install update and run the free malwarebytes program and superantispyware too. Only way to try to get it cleaned up a little bit.
