Both XP2 and Win98 crashing after that update. Did not run a virus scan only updated and nothing was in the vault. I have been out of town so I don't know if 1778 update cure my problem. Updated to 1779 tonight gotta wait and see.

And I put off removing AVG on both pc's for fear of problems. Reality check it didn't matter.

I am sorry it hit you, I know it has been a mess for several people. AVG sure has had some bad luck recently, makes me glad I decided to go with AVAST.

I have AVG 8.0 and have had no problems on my two desktops and my new Dell Laptop. Don't fix what is not broken.

as I said originally this update did not affect those with version 8. And not all version 7.5 users were affected but those that were pretty much had a big paperweight.

Each person has different programs on their machines so what may work for some may not for others, when it does not affect your machine you are lucky, for those that it does it is not a fun experience.

RC, You are right on. We are so lucky you share so much of your time, research and experiences. Thank you! I'm not sure which AV to move onto. I have used many - McAfee and Norton and dislike them both. InoculatIT (was my favorite) eTrust, Avira and Avast. I like AVG just don't want to take the change with 8.0.

I really like AVG and have it on all of my machines. I have 8.0 since they offered it and had no problems at all and it has been running for months (can't remember when they updated). I have had so many different AV on my machines and find this the easiest and less intrusive. It doesn't slow anything down. The only complaint is the update manager doesn't work. You need to update manually each day. I have the same problem on my 4 computers. I thought they would have fixed this problem by now. I work from home remotely using Go To My PC and it causes a break in the connection because it keeps trying to update. Very annoying.

I considered paying for it, but until they fix this problem, I will stay with the free versions. Otherwise, I love it.

Jane that is a problem I have seen many report, problems with the updates, some say theirs works fine and updates automatically every day others say nope won't do updates.
AVG used to be the first one I would recommend it has long been a great free program, I think they tried to incorporate too much in 8 and are struggling to get it all working together. I am sure once they finally get all the bugs worked out it will be good again, it is unfortunate for them because in this transition they are losing a lot of their long time followers, but most say they are willing to go back if things seem to improve which is good.

I went with Avast and actually think I like it better than I did AVG, I love the screen saver scan, when my pc is sitting there doing nothing now it is scanning and it has not affected it in any way that I have seen.
It really depends on what works for our individual systems, we all have really different machines.

tumblenweed I used to use InnoculateIT years ago too and loved it.
I think if you choose either Avast or Avira you will have good protection, now in case no one has told you Avira will pop up those nag screens once a day I think to purchase the pay version but I have seen mention of little hacks to get around that.

Thankfully on my linux box that I am on 99% of the time this is not an issue! ClamAV does come on it and is active but that is more to protect my windows machines for when I send something from my linux to my windows, usually email, but my email is scanned prior to getting to my pc anyway. Just another reason I love linux.

it is labeling Adobe Flash as a trojan, be on the watch out for this false positive.

RC, I think Avast is the only free av I can use on my 98. I took Avast off becuse I could not tell if it was protecting me or running correctly. The Avast forum had to many people with attitudes - simple questions yielded rudeness. Think I installed Avira and uninstalled it the same day that was about 4 years ago. Gotta go with one of them. Think I will put Avast on the 98 and play with it for awhile I can come here for help.

Jane, Auto update manager does not work for me aswell. What happens when you have a break in connection? Do you get an error message? Just wondering if my disconnects are AVG or my ISP.

Man with the posting police coming out of the woodwork here suddenly it makes one not want to post at all.
Personally I rather read up and be fore warned just in case rather than know nothing but hey thats just me.

I don't blindly react to anything, I educate and prepare myself by reading and gaining knowledge.
I am on forums that have members from all over the world so in fact many of them would indeed be affected, how exactly do we know that no one here would be from one of those countries ?

First of all, thank you raven, as usual you provided the most updated and useful information and links. Majicman, I find you rude and wonder what purpose you think your information served? There are polite ways of adding information to a post without insulting someone who we all respect and admire.

Most of us do not have the time or knowledge to investigate everything going on with our computers. I come to this forum often with questions and problems which are always graciously answered without making me feel like a dumb bunny.

Tumbleweed, my connection gets blocked remotely. I use Go to My PC to access my office computer and when AVG tries to update, it freezes my connection. I will have to shut off automatic updates on my work machine in order to use it over the weekend and at night. It is not the ISP, it somehow blocks the remote connection. Very annoying because it defeats the purpose of Go to My PC.

MM, just to point out your error I never posted a link to an article from some other country about the AVG error you are speaking of, had you bothered to read the link to the well known and respected Register you would have seen that the AVG false positive I was reporting was to an Adobe FLASH false positive as I stated in my post. NOT the windows file false positive you are posting of.

The creator of this thread was kindly giving a heads up to the false positive dealing with the Windows system file user32.dll and his link is directly to an AVG forum information post (not an "article from another country") . Are you accusing the AVG forum of being incorrect also then along with camp56? Just trying to make sure I have it all straight.

In response to majickmann, the link I provided was dated on November 9, and I did check out other sources before it was posted, and no where did I find that the problem was isolated to certain countries. It was posted only as a precaution so users of AVG would be aware that some users were having problems. The information you provided is dated November 11 and CNET posted a statement from AVg on November 13.

I know this is probably a dumb question, but what do you do if your AVG does mistakenly read one of thise files as malicious? I assume there's a way to tell AVG to ignore it? I've been lucky enough to never have AVG want to remove something it shouldn't.

An excellent question. False positives occur in all Anti-virus software, so no way for us as users to stop that.

But, you can change the automatic deletion setting. This will cause the program to ask if you want to heal the file and/or to delete the file. Of course, you have to know if it is safe to do so. If in doubt, a quick google search on the file name may provide additional information that can be used to make an intelligent decision.

On AVG 8, open the user interface. Select "Computer scanner". Find the checkbox beside "Automatic heal/remove infections". It probably is checked. Simply click on the box to unselect.

AVG 7.* has the same setting, possibly in a different location on the User Interface.

Every anti-virus program has this option, but may not be as easy to locate.

The problem described is a rarity for any AV software, especally for AVG. But, mistakes do happen.

I've used AVG products (aka Grisoft) since the late 90's without any issues. Over the years, that includes personal and client computers.
