AVG Problem

Trying the free version, but every time I turn on my computer it starts a scan. Even if I have to restart, it starts up. Does anyone use this AV and could please instruct me how to change the settings to only scan manually? This is very annoying and I'm about to uninstall it. I searched around and see nowhere to stop this.

Open AVG

go to Test Centre...then Scheduler...double click Test Plan
and uncheck Scheduled Time.

I had the same message, but reopened the AVG program and ran update again (10:28am EDT) and everything ran smoothly. If it was an AVG problem I think they fixed it.

Have you completely uninstalled the McAfee ? Sometimes even though expired, it continues to work, but just wont update. You can't run two virus protectors at the same time without some snafu's.

Yes from what the AVG people are saying they have now got the corrupted issue fixed so if you do an update it should correct the problem. IF you did the work around you should also be able to do the new update also.

It is my experience that AVG does a very short scan on startup, exactly as it should. Then by default it is set to do a full scan at 8 a.m. The full scan time can be adjusted to suit the user, mine was always set to 3 a.m. because I knew I would not be at the computer at that hour.

I am unsure about why anyone would want to defeat the purpose of the program to save a mere 10 to 15 seconds on a reasonably fast machine. Just a few days ago I installed AVG on a PII with 64 megs of RAM and Win98 for a lady and it only took 20 seconds for the initial scan every time I started the computer.

Owbist, mine would scan before the Welcome Screen and take 20 minutes to finish. I do shut my machine off at night, and usually in the morning am rushing to get started. Each time I'd start up the scan would begin. I couldn't stop it and use the computer. I had no way of working around it. It certainly wasn't a short scan. It was so annoying, and I don't scan each day. Usually 1X a week.
I have a fairly new computer, good size hard drive and ram and it still took 20 minutes.

Hmm, not sure on the answer to that then Jane. Do you start the computer some time after 8 a.m.? Perhaps adjusting the full scan time to when you go to lunch or any fixed time you are away for about 30 minutes might do the trick. By default it runs every 24 hours so changing the timing might end your early morning frustrations.

Of course if you are happy with your current scenario then by all means stick with it.

owbist, I'm wondering if you are referring to the Boot Up Scan option that takes only seconds.
This option is not available in Win XP.
