wolf df or dcs ag?

I remodeled my kitchen last year but didnÂt replace my relatively new KA range planning on doing it in a year or two. Well now is the time and I find I made a big mistake last year. I really want the 30" Wolf AG but it needs a rough opening of 30 1/4". And yes, I have only 30". Oh for an extra 1/4".

So what do I get instead? I have narrowed it down to the Wolf 30" DF or the DCS AG. I like the DCS burners Â all simmer very low and seem to have good control even with LP. And itÂs about $900 cheaper than the Wolf. I have read all the posts I could find about each and thereÂs lots more info here about Wolf and most seem to really love their ranges, both AG and DF. Less info about the DCS. I called DCS to get some technical questions answered and had a terrible experience. CouldnÂt get the answers to some pretty basic questions and was put on hold for long periods and finally disconnected. DidnÂt give me confidence that if thereÂs a problem theyÂll be there.

I admit that I find the look of the Wolf much more appealing than the DCS. I had my heart set on the Wolf AG and the DF seems like the next best. I like the oven better than on the DCS but am little concerned about all the electronics. I could live with spending the extra money to get something I really love because I expect to have it for a very long time but will these electronics shorten the life of the range? Plus I have to run a 220 line for the DF.

Finally, all the discussions about electric vs gas ovens Â I like to bake, breads and cookies etc. I also roast etc. While I understand there may be subtle differences in the performance between the two, are the differences significant enough that would make you regret choosing one or the other?

Have you gone and measured the range(s) in person? You might find that you have enough wiggle room to make what you want, work.

There are some of us on another thread experiencing a similar issue with our Wolf AG's, but Wolf is working on the problem with us and seems committed to correcting the problem.

Despite the issue we've been experiencing, I am very happy with my Wolf AG so far (so much mere so than the problematic Jade range we returned in a buy-back). It's a lot of fun to cook on/with. The burner pans are a bit of a PIA to keep clean (a lot of splattering when cooking!), but I'm working on getting my cleaning routine perfected! All in all, were I to do this again, at this point I would still consider the Wolf as a top choice.

I have a DCS all-gas self-cleaning 30" range and I love it. It's almost five years old now and works great. You're right about the burners - they all have high BTUs and the simmer is fantastic. The oven works great - it's fantastic for roasting meats and poultry and works fine for baking. I make souffles, cakes, cookies, popovers and muffins and everything comes out fine. I also really like the broiler - I get compliments on my steak all the time.

I'm a little surprised that you had problems talking to their customer service - I haven't needed to call them in a while but when I did, they were very responsive. Since they were acquired by F&P, I believe the calls are initially answered by people in New Zealand but they've transferred me to the technicians in California when necessary.

By the way, have you looked at the Capital Precision range. I don't know if the size would meet your needs but the company was founded by people who were originally at DCS.

AFAIK, the burners on the Monogram are more similar to the Wolf dual fual burners ... dual stacked. The Wolf all gas model that you are looking at has two-ring burners ... a larger ring on the outside for high to medium temps, and a smaller inner ring for low and simmer. The Wolf also has a top that removes completely for cleaning, as well as single grates. I prefer the smaller grates because they are easier for me to lift and move around, and I really like being able to remove the stove top for a thorough cleaning. From what I understand, GE's Monogram's customer service department is supposed to be superior to their regular line, though I'm only going by what I've heard here and can't vouch for it. That in itself kind of rubs me the wrong way (if you spend more, we will treat you better than if you had only bought one of our "lesser" products). Perhaps someone here will be able to comment on their service experience with Monogram. I've had recent dealings with Wolf customer service and I am really just blown away by their service. Seriously, when you call them, even with a relatively minor issue, they treat you like you are their only customer and that solving your problem is their top priority. They return phone calls when promised, they return emails, they make follow-up calls, and if they don't know the answer to a question, they find someone who does. I don't think I would choose a product based solely on the company's reputation for service, but I do take it into consideration. If I liked both ranges equally, I'd go with one with the better service reputation. Otherwise, I'd choose the one with the features that I liked the best.

Either one is going to be good. Some folks here will have a preference for Wolf over anything Thermador and some will have a preference for having a grill and griddle. Are you located where having an indoor grill will be an advantage? Would you use it or grill outdoors? Are the things you would use a second oven for also things that will do well in a convection micro (smaller size as well as the type of cooking)? The convection micro may not be any larger than the second oven on a 48" range. When I was looking at appliances and planning, a lot of folks were talking about 48" ranges and how much they used the smaller oven and preferred using it so they didn't have to heat the larger one. Seems most of the most often used things could go in the smaller oven. They had me convinced, and I would have liked the look of a range, so I would have done a 48" if a range didn't place the ovens too low for me to work comfortably. In the end, I think you will need to consider your own cooking needs and see which one works best for you. Take a few pans to the store and see for yourself what fits in that smaller oven.

Hi, I'm new here, but I found this thread and was interested to hear everyone's thoughts. We're just starting remodeling and I have room for an AG or DF range, plus another oven. I've been looking at all the discussions around the Wolf 36" ranges, and now I'm beginning to think I should get the AG range, and make the second oven electric. But I've heard folks say they have issues with lighting the burners on the Wolf when the oven is on? I do a lot of cooking and some baking, although my baking is usually cookies, brownies, cakes, not bread. What would you do, given the option?

Thank you Francois47 I actually have found lots of partial view DF with black knobs but not full view, so that pic that helpful. I actually went to the Wolf showroom today to see the black knobs. Thank you Research Queen, I did not know you get both if you go with black. I think I am having a hard time with this b/c: 1. I like the look of the AG better with our super traditional, old fashioned log cabin kitchen--we are using lots of salvaged materials, pine on the walls, ceiling, fir on the floors, cherry or mahogany cabinets... 2. I like the DF for electric oven, sealed burners also self clean, and the fact that maybe I would get a pizza/bread stone later on. 3. Oddly, I am worried about getting food crumbs etc..inside the AG and having mice take up a home while we shut our cabin down for the winter. I have looked at other brands, but am hung up on the fact that Wolf builds these ranges in the factory with specific parts for LP which we use and that they are built like tanks and have seemingly more responsive custom. service than Viking. You are have them...are you in love? Were you torn? Its like buying a bed for me...a daily relationship! PS. I went and saw the black knobs--they tone the contemporary lines and bulk down for me

Thanks weissman. It's good to hear that you're pleased with your DCS. I haven't looked at the Precision. There is a Capital dealer about an hour from me but they only have one range on display and it's not a Precision. And I don't care for that dealer. I'd like to buy locally or what passes for locally out in the boonies.

And cat mom, good luck getting your problem solved. I've been following that discussion. Sounds pretty frustrating.

I'm going to post separately some specific questions I have about people's experience with the DF.
