If you can't put it everywhere, limit it to the "public" rooms, including family room, powder room, library plus the master bedroom. That's how I do it. Every time I think of putting it elsewhere, my mind runs to the $7+ per ft. x the room dimensions and I balk.

In the house I'm trying to sell we have it almost everywhere: living room, dining room, foyer and stairs, kitchen, laundry room, powder room, master bedroom, upstairs den-playroom, and all the bathrooms. The only rooms we don't have it in are the upstairs bedrooms that have sloped ceilings and the closets. I won't ever do this again though because as we try to sell it, no one wants to "pay extra" for luxuries such as these.

The only areas without crown in our house are the closets. The complexity and size of the crown varies between public and private spaces though.

ncamy - I'd pay more for more crown. Lots of people will but no one is paying premium for anything right now....

Are you going to have regular ceiling everywhere or have you considered tray or other options?

We have crown in all the public areas and the master bedroom and bath. I wish I had included it everywhere, but keeping our costs under control required us to set priorities. Eventually, we'll add it though.

I'm still trying to figure if it was worth handpainting some of the mouldings. The buyer is keeping them and indeed painting the rooms in the same colours our designer picked. But enough other prospects turned their noses up at these touches that I wouldn't bother again.

It also depends on the style of the home. Crown molding would be inappropriate in a modern or many adobe type homes and a New England saltbox and a Greek Revival would look odd using the same builder grade "Colonial" available at home centers. The products need to fit the style.
