Crown molding looks great in most rooms, but the rooms that typically have it in new construction are the living room, dining room, library, etc. - common areas. In your case, I would at least do it in the dining room and great room. Possibly the gameroom, depending on how fancy it is.

You can have it in all the rooms, or just in some, or none at all.

What do YOU want?

What is the height of your ceilings? Regardless of the height in the great room - definately for sure there. If the room height is greater than the standard 8ft than I would definately consider installing the crown molding in it. If your kitchen and dining room is open concept then you are to consider a few things. Do your cabinets go to the ceiling? If so crown molding on the top of the cabinets and ceiling crown molding, in my opinion, don't look great together.

I would definately keep it in the areas people see for a wow factor!

We have crown throughout the entire first floor, except for the mudroom. On our second floor we have it in the hall and the master bedroom.

IMO you can do crown on cabs and ceiling - if you match it!

We figured we needed to do it in the master area, dining, greatroom, gameroom and maybe the kitchen. Some people have told me that you don't put it in the kitchen, while others say just the opposite.

At the minimum, do the foyer, masterbed room and dining room. It's not(shouldn't be) very expensive to do all rooms. Most use MDF which is only about .60/ft. plus labor.

We are building a house and our interior doors have transoms and are now confused re the mouldings we should use. Then what do we use for the windows, floor mouldings and crowns that match the doors. So confused.
