Backup?

I am backing up some of my files in case I have to reinstall XP. I have 2 hard drives and the slave is partition2 with one partition dedicated to some of my applications.

1. Will I be able to uninstall these applications through "add/remove" after I reinstall XP? I'm sure I will have to reinstall some of them to get the correct files into the registry, correct?

2.I have saved the application subfolders, if I have to reinstall the apps, such as Paintshop Pro to which I have added plugins, tubes, and filters.

3. Should I save "Application Data" from my user folder?

The most important thing to back-up are the files you create mostly the stuff in My documents folder, photos, bank information, word documents, ect. A partition is not a separate drive it is part of the c drive with a name like d, or f, its ok to put applications here but don't save back up personal data here, that should be saved on a separate physical drive either inside the computer or an usb external drive or cd media, I find the external usb the best way and there portable I copy my entire "My documents folder to it and any programs I have downloaded, Also see the link provided. The most important thing is to have your xp cd, key code, any other discs for programs, in a safe place.

The partitioned drive is a second drive on my computer (slave).

I backed up on my external drive as well as DVD. Never know when either of them will konk out :-)

One of the partitions on the slave is where I save most of my data...such as documents, photos etc. So I am safe there. Just not sure about the applications on the apps drive. I have all the downloads and installation disks to almost all of them. I can always download again.

Heya Scott, Im not an expert on all of this, but here's my 2cents. All UPS units should just power back on to last state (on or off) once the power returns. I checked the Navien specs, its draw is 200w max. If you got a 700w battery backup, that should give you about an hour of runtime for your tankless. This would be if the battery was plugged inline between the wall and your water heater. Im an IT guy and size batteries for telecom equipment. What will happen over time however, is the battery backup uses lead acid batteries sits and waits for power outages to occur. Its in a constant charging state, and after about 3 years or so the batereis need to be replaced. As you get closer to replacement, the runtime of the backup unit shortens, so 1 hr at 200w is an optimal setting. Also, i think 200w is a max draw number, Im not sure what its volt amp draw is, but I dont think it is much lower. I do know that when running the hot water, the Navien has to power a recirculation valve actuator to direct the hot water through the pipes, I would think that wold be using more electricity rather than the electronics. Once the power goes out, your one hour clock starts ticking from that point with a consumer battery backup. You could turn off the battery backup and power it up when you want hot water to extend your window. It will beep while the power is out (alarm, which you could turn off). I have a car battery inverter that I use to power my Tankless, but for a while considered getting a small generator that would run hot water and the refrigerator for short cycles. If I had to throw out all the fridge and freezer food it would more than pay for the generator, but historically we dont get long outages (bay area peninsula). so far..... My new concern is the fridge food is considered safe for up to 4 hours, and the freezer 24, so thats become my new worry for backup. Thx, Ruben

To investigate this further would require measuring the generator waveform (voltage, frequency, and shape), and the start-up current draw of the cooktop. Your cooktop may be finicky about what its power source looks like in waveform and source impedance. My former Kenmore and current Frigidaire induction cooktops (Electrolux designs) run happily from my 20 kW Milbank fixed motor generator, along with other concurrent household power loads. From the point of view of emergency use of your induction cooktop, the simplest method of addressing it, excluding the good suggestions of @User, would be to obtain a sine wave output UPS that can do 240 Vac at the needed current load of your cooktop. This would be somewhat expensive, but significantly less than the purchase and installation costs of a propane tank and motor generator/auto transfer switch setup that had relatively clean output. Battery replacement every 5 years should be incorporated in the cost-benefit analysis.

Wow that is so scary! It's also a big problem with people going forward in those giant pick up trucks where they literally can't see over the hood to see if something small is in front of them. It's like why they put those arms that swing out in the front of school buses so toddlers will walk far enough away to be seen by the driver. We were in our truck towing a log splitter, stopped at a light. The guy behind us had a big pick up and stopped. But as he could no longer see the splitter over his hood, he crept forward while the light was still red and ran into it and us. Nothing happened on our end, but he acquired a dent in his bumper. His lesson to learn. I too am thankful for all the safety stuff that we have on our Subaru. (In my book, Subaru is the best car company ever.) Besides the back up camera, ours includes a "Vision Assist Rear Cross Traffic Alert" which is fabulous. It warns me way ahead of time if anyone/anything is behind me when my car is in reverse. Especially when backing out of a parking spot where you can't see because of the vehicles on either side, it has been so helpful. I've also been saved by the warning of getting too close to a car in front. And I use the side vehicle warning lights every time I go to change lanes. For highway driving, you can't beat eyesight...set the cruise control and it will slow you down as you approach a car in front and maintain a certain distance. Go around them and it returns to your preset speed. Another safety feature I love is the headlights turn with the car, so at night, when you're making, say, a left hand turn, the headlights turn left too so you can see where you're going. As I age, my reaction time and my vision isn't getting better, so having all the safety features is a real blessing.

HP Laptop drive backup needed

Update: 1. I took my laptop drive to Staples and they offered to resurrect my data for $289, which I seemed not worth it, and I probably will give up on that drive - at least, for now. 2. I also brought with me a hard drive from a WinXP-era desktop to the same Staples store with the same cable and they couldn't read the drive, but with another adapter they had, they could read that file and could copy it to a flash drive for $89. The reason for the difference in price is that the first case was a "data recovery" service, for which they had to a per-use fee to the software company they used, while the second case would have worked without that service. Being a cheapskate, I would rather buy a different interface cable than spend $89 for a one-time service. One hint from the Staples guy was that with their cable, they could feel the drive start up and could see data; with my cable, the drive never started up. I brought that drive home and, using my cable, plugged it in to my newer laptop and it recognized the drive, but thought it was a removable disk because it asked me to insert a disk. So, for me to purchase the proper interface cable, what features should I look for?

Zep is right on and offers good advice on backing up your important data. USB drives are excellent for this. As a matter of fact, I suggest that if you do online banking you ONLY use the USB drive to store your data and remove it (properly, of course) each time. It may sound paranoid but its safest to keep that data off your hard drive for obvious security reasons.

You can't "back-up" software applications like you can with all your data. You can, however, make a full image of your entire main drive (C drive) and restore it on DVD(s)in case of catastrophic failure. This can be accomplished with a program like Norton Ghost or Acronis Drive Image. There are many others on the market. If something happened like you get wiped by a nasty virus, you can restore the computer to the exact state that it was in when you made the image. You will not have to re-install all the applications and serials, etc.

When you do this, for the image to be able to work correctly when restoring, you must have the same hardware configuration (unless this has changed recently, Zep?). So every time you upgrade, you should make a new image. This is very worth the price of the software if you have a lot of programs that you do not want to have to re-install.

Norton Ghost or Acronis Image, the only product I like from Norton, yes that is the way to go not sure about hardware.
The other thing as long as you have the xp or what ever cd and the key code your ok, so many people do not have these items and get stuck when a system crash occurs. The only thing I back up is my documents folder and to be honest I do not do it daily and I should, Being in Real-Estate I have files by law need to be recorded and accessible.

I just did an xp upgrade re-install on my laptop,
Tried IE7pro, and it screwed things up.

Didnt backup or save a single thing before the reinstall, couldnt!. I tried a repair install & It broke windows completely. No choice but reinstall xp.

Didnt format with the reinstall.
Everything file/folder wise is still intact after a xpsp2- upgrade install.

XP upgrade install !

It left all existing files/folders/paths/users under C:\Documents and Settings , more or less duplicated them with new name.extension ... left untouched the whole C drive - with the exception; It erased and reloaded the windows folder.

So some programs need reinstalled to rebuild registry keys, and new registrations, some dont need a thing. All data that existed before, still exists, unless it was in the windows folder. Everything is accessable thought the original user profiles ,, old folders.

Couple of clean up deletes from the install and windows folder is now 1.7Gb. There must have been a lot of junk accumulated in that windows folder. Because I more total free space than I've had in a long time.

For those with Maxtor or Seagate hard drives who would like Acronis True Image it is available free for the downloading.

Both manufacturers (Seagate now owns Maxtor anyway) offer a free download of their software which includes the True Image software. Saves spending US$49.95

Here we go grandms - and anyone else who wants/needs it. This is a 104 megabyte file. You will get a file named diskwizardsetup(dot)en(dot)exe - I did it like that so gardenweb will not refuse the post, replace (dot) with . of course..

My external hard drive came with EMC Retrospect Express HD program. I'm assuming it also works something like the other two programs mentioned. I know I have the option of backing up EVERYTHING on all drives or just certain folders and/or files.

Backup?
