Has M/S changed its way of handling updates?

I ask because, although I now have a check mark beside "Notify me, but don't automatically download or install them (updates)," this morning I received a notice containing many updates, left them all checked, clicked to accept them, and then nothing happened, except that the notification box disappeared. I am pretty sure that it said that updates with NO check mark would NOT be downloaded. Am I remembering it wrong? I'm thinking I must have, because the expected box saying I could continue working while the updating process was going on never appeared, nor did the notification to restart my computer.

Yet, when I went to ControlPanel>System>AutomaticUpdates again and chose to download previous updates I had missed (or rejected), the ones I had just been offered did not appear. Instead, I was notified about two others. When I accepted them, again, nothing happened except for the box disappearing.

Reboot the computer see if they install.

I downloaded those and I had to reboot a couple of times to get them all. It would not do them all at one time.

I read hundreds of posts on the thread peren.all linked to. The people on the house remodeling side of gardenweb are hopping mad. Houzz has made some changes in response as mountainy man has noted. The big changes for us are only four pictures per post. I asked for each post’s pictures to be linked together so I only have to expand to see details once per post. The expanded pictures were all over my iPad and looking at them was difficult. Today they seem to be behaving themselves better and filling the top center of the screen. I’d still like them to be linked with some kind of back-next link.

When we renovated our home including the kitchen 24 years ago, I assumed our decorator would say that our colonial style oak harvest table and chairs would need to go, and I was prepared to fight for them LOL. (She was new to us, British, with a plummy accent and lots of style.) But she was horrified at the thought that we would replace such a quality piece. Along the same lines, Prince Charles apparently wears suits with visible mending (apparently his tailor keeps the cutting scraps, for future repairs). I am constantly amazed that people think that a kitchen that was beautiful 30 years ago is suddenly ugly because it is oak. And, heaven forbid, with cathedral arch raised panels. How can they be ewww when they were wow?

I agree with the first above houzzers.....paint it a warm white and leave it for a year living in it to decide where you want to begin, then begin with one room only and do that room completely.....people get so caught up in saving money, that they invariably end up spending a little bit in each room because they cannot afford to do one room right......I speak from experience! Painting the whole house will cost a lot of time money and headaches especially if you have never painted.....just sayin'.....So paint it a nice white and live in it and then decide where to begin first.... As you have always rented, you can be patient, and keep a list going of what you want to do in each room and then will be able to pare down the list to the most important.....personally I think you will get the most bang for you buck, and great satisfaction by tackling the kitchen after your year of living in the house; that way you get to enjoy all the money you spend before you decide to sell it......good luck, your happiness and joy at what you have accomplished in buying a home, is refreshing and charming and admirable..

@chisue...It's 37.5" off the table. It can only be adjusted by 6" increments, because of the bars it hangs by. I'm pretty good with a feather duster. @arcy_gw...I actually found photos of the fixture and the ONLY place that still lists it for sale is HOUZZ, $800. It's been discontinued. The manufacturers suggested retail price was $1198. I was not happy when it arrived damaged...but...now it's perfect...and hung...WOW! I'm elated to have it up! I cut fabric on THIS table....10 lights is an amazing addition to my seeing what I'm cutting. ❤️❤️❤️

I did reboot, twice, but haven't seen a sign of anything being installed. Unfortunately, I didn't make note of the names of the programs in the update, so I can't check Add/Remove to see if they are there. But wouldn't there be some sort of notice that they are being downloaded and then installed?

go to the actual windows update site and let it scan your pc select the custom option so you can see each one it lists, then over on the left is the option to see your downloaded history you can see all that you have downloaded and installed from there.

start> all programs> windows update at the top

Agree with RC. If there are more than a couple, and this time there were a whole bunch, mine does the same thing, so I find it easier to just go to Microsoft Update page and get them there. With as many as there were this time, I just did half of them, rebooted, and then did the other half.

Well, that suggestion about the Microsoft Update page sounded good, but now I am more confused. The following are listed as high-priority updates for me:

According to Add/Remove, I already have SP3 installed (though there is no mention of when that was done), so why would I need SP1 and/or SP2? Not only that, but the middle one in the above list, KB967715, is in Add/Remove as already installed on my computer, and so is SP1.

So who's crazy here? Maybe I am going to be! Should I just go ahead and tell them all to be installed?

The SP1, SP2, and SP3 referenced on the update page deal with the .NET Framework applications. The SP3 that you already have is the XP SP3. Go ahead and get them all, but suggest you not try to do them all at once.

If they didn't download and install you will get another notice and they will still be in the update.

I have never supported the idea of automatic updating. Being on an antique DUN I have to update manually, but at a minimum the system should be set to approve installation.

I do support the discipline of installing only two or three updates at a time, particularly those dedicated to the O/S and requiring a reboot. The idea of all the new code, removed code and the flotsam created opens too many potential pitfalls. I have seen way too many post-installation concerns after a carte blanche installation.

Can anyone explain this> size: 0 KB, 0 minutes? What/why it happens. I have had this happen to me before. When it does I go to MS site and install it from there.

I have noticed a change in how the updates show up on my screen. In my windows update,I now have an area to the right of the updates that describes the update if you click and highlight any given update available!!! Hm!!! Has anyone else noticed this change?

I found information on the (KB967715) update. But, no answer to as why the Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes, which also shows up concerning other updates as well. I have never come across this before myself...yet. I am quite curious as well!!! Must be an XP thing. I have Vista.
