Want to build a Music CD

I want to start saving some songs to build a Music CD as a Christmas Present. It once used to be simple. I bought various CDs, copied the songs I liked to the PC and created a CD to play in the car. That was like 15 years ago so I am looking for the current way to do this as I did back then. The other stuff some people do is overly complicated. Here are a few questions?

1. Is it true that one can now buy (download) the specific song one wants rather than buy the whole CD as I used to done eons ago? Can you suggest a website(s) with selections of old songs 50-70s since the present is for my parents?

2. What type of music file suffix (Windows) is the one that is being used now a days when creating music files, WAV?

3. Do the websites that sell the music let you hear the song first so you can confirm that the song you want is the one to be downloaded?

I plan to create a CD myself by simply collecting the songs and moving the files into the CD.

Sorry, Itunes enthusiasts should not apply. I never understood it but it was too cumbersome.

I am not interested in anything illegal either.

This is a XP PC with no music software other than the one that may have come with XP.

XP has the media center and the Media player, both of which, I believe burn cd's?

I make loads of CD's for our use only and have several all Xmas, and I download them all for free off the internet, to my desktop, then into my burn program, very easy!simply right click on carol you want then save target...
here's one of my fav. links to xmas music free...
In Aug. I made DVD's of a slide show of our xmas lighting inside and out added about 5 carols, and will put them in fam. xmas cards living in other states this year..

well you can actually buy a cd in a music store and then make copies of it and that would be yours, or you can buy the music at online music stores like amazon, google music or play store now, or sites like Rhapsody. Amazon MP3 Rhapsody

much will depend on the type of player they will be using, you will need to use a file extension format that their player will play. so you need to know that, will it play .wav will it play mp3 etc. Once you know that then you know which type of format you need to save the songs in so that they can play them. Also some players only like certain types of cd, some do not like the re-writable type for example. I had to go through a little trail and error when making them for my Mother. some she could play in her car but not in her older home player.

I would not under any cirmcustance use any type of peer to peer sharing site, you will get into dangerous territory there and lots of infections.

Stay with safe purchase sites or good known free sites that are legit. You can purchase from walmart.com, amazon.com, rhapsody.com, many legit sites.

that is the mp3 download site at walmart for example.
Most sites will let you hear a small sample of the song before buying it so you know it is what you are looking for.
On the walmart one just click on the little arrow in front of the song name to hear the sample.

Websites like this one have lots of oldies and they have already compiled cd's so you may want to go with one of theirs.

you can listen to songs here then search for them to purchase.

the site I am listing at the bottom is an archive where they have lots of oldies which you can actually download for free from the site in mp3 format. the directions are on the page, you click on the download button for the group of songs you like, that will open a new page with each song listed, just click on the song you want and a download dialog box will open, choose to save the song to your pc, I put mine in a folder inside the My Music folder, you must always right click on the download once it is on your pc and select to scan the file with your Antivirus program and if you have malwarebytes you can also select to scan with it. I do both anytime I download any type of file to make sure it is safe.

Dog gone it, Raven, I never will get any hosework done if you keep posting sites like golden hunt. But, thanks, I enjoyed it and downloaded a few good oldies. I couldn't figure out how to download from the archives, tho.
Seems like it requires payment.

the archives site has a free option but to use it you usually have to wait in line for a turn to do it because they let all their pay customers go first. Which of course is also a way to try to get you to pay for a faster service. The hosting site is just trying to keep the files alive and stored and they can use that site to host them with little to no cost so it is better than nothing.

I know, I find sites like that and end up spending a whole day doing something I had certainly not planned on doing, guess that is why I still have boxes left to unpack LOL.
