Waffle Baker - Not Belgian

Can anyone recommend a waffle baker that isn't intended for Belgian waffles? I know there are lots of them for sale, but I hate to just take pot-shot.

My son gave me this waffle maker from Williams-Sonoma a few years ago. I made waffles on Sunday mornings, (and he ate them). I'm very pleased with it. Now that all the kids are gone, I don't do it as often, though I will make them for a light supper sometimes. I love waffles.

I've always had a waffle maker, usually one like the Black and Decker or whoever made this style before. I'm a waffle maker snob, but not belgian waffles.

Thank you, momj47. It's nice to hear that there is another waffle maker snob out there!

I had a Black & Decker for 22 years. It finally just got so yucky that we tossed it.

Do you feel that your new waffle maker is any faster than a B&D?

It's a GE...easily 25 years old....works wonderfully. It has a head adjustment from low to high, I leave it on Medium. It has a red light that indicates it's heating, when the light goes out, the iron is hot enough, pour in the batter, slowly close the lid, the light comes on and when it goes out again your waffle is done. I would check out the thrift shops. I have another old well seasoned waffle iron that makes skinnier waffles that must date to 1930....it has lost the knob that opens it....I need to get rid of it, even though it still makes wonderful waffles. All I could find was this discontinued model: http://www.cuisinart.com/discontinued/waffle_makers/waf-6.html It seems square traditional waffle makers are difficult to come by these days.

I also made these last week-end and was disappointed with the flavor. The recipe that I made up myself tastes much better to me and also has a texture that I prefer. However, I might try this recipe again with some changes, as I found the waffles to be very bland and airy, whether I made them crisp or not. Not only that, several of them stuck to my waffle maker, and I had never had that happen before. Maybe the recipe needs even more butter (At first I thought it had a lot!), but after the waffles started sticking, I started buttering the inside of the waffle maker, and the extra butter helped the flavor. Changes I would make: double the eggs (I like my waffles to taste more like crepes), omit the water and proof the yeast in the milk, and substitute cream for half of the milk. Also, instead of the 1/4 tsp of soda, I would add 1 tsp of vodka at the final mixing. For me, this helps the texture a lot. In addition, I think I would like to use whole wheat flour for half of the flour. I will also need to use a slightly larger bowl, as the one I used filled up completely, but the plastic wrap on top prevented any spilling. I do like the yeast better than the baking powder, as I think that baking powder gives a somewhat metallic taste to the waffles, and I do not mind a slight yeast flavor. I also like being able to make the batter the night before so that I can cook them as soon as I get up - that gave me time to do some gardening in the morning before it got too sunny. Kevin continued to garden until noon. I am glad I tried this recipe, as I had been reluctant to make yeast waffles before, partly because I was so happy with my old recipe. While I still prefer my old recipe to this one, I think I can combine the two to make something more to my taste. I personally think that the 1/2 cup water in the original recipe was a mistake, since it does not appear in the ingredients list, and that's why Ann needed to add the 3/4 cup of additional flour. The dry to wet ingredients proportion seems to be better in FOAS's recipe. I'm not sure how I would feel about the vanilla in the recipe, but it might have enough alcohol to have a similar effect to the vodka. I might decide to try Canadian Whisky in place of vodka. Lars

Bobbie : If you can take a picture, it would help. Top and bottom. Or check the Model # I'll take a look at mine, to see if it comes apart easily. If it is the same as mine ( Toastmaster Model 252A ), Don't throw it away. Mine looks like it should go in the trash, but it bakes better that any other I had before. You might be able to use an angle bracket and put a screw into the rivet hole , But not too far in, to where you would hit any wires. Cut the metal bracket leg off to the same height, as the other legs and put a rubber boot on the bottom. You could also use a piece of 3/4 IN. copper tubing. Flatten one end and bend it 90 deg. Drill a hole to put a screw thru,into the bottom of the waffle iron. Cut the copper to the same height as the other legs. Put a rubber boot on it, or stuff a cork in it, so it won't scratch. It should only take 5 minutes to make the leg. Let me know how it turns out. Maryanne: Good thing I didn't see the one in Hazelton first. Why didn't you put a plug on the old one ? Purchased a Villaware waffle maker from Amazon this past year. Read all the reviews and the most negative seemed to be with its ear-piercing beep when it is ready. Decided to take a chance on it, and the beep is definitely loud but at least we won't forget something is in it! So far it has made waffles that meet my DH's desires, as he eats more of them than I do. It is a good size for storage and stands on end. Sorry, don't remember the model #.

I think the Villaware waffle maker may be a little slower than my old one. It has a good heat selection, I keep it in the middle and the waffles turn out well. I spray it before I make the first waffle, and of course, I never wash it, my mother's instructions. They turn our nice and crispy outside, though there is still usually steam coming out when it's done, they are definitely baked all the way through. It seems to do what it's supposed to do.

It does seem that Belgian waffles are the thing - we are having a hard time finding a "regular" waffle maker.

We had a Toastmaster for aeons that did a great job until it wore out. That Black & Decker looks just like it with the same reversable grill design an' everything! Thanks MomJ!

Our son wants to get the kind that flips over - like some hotels have. Waring makes one for $80 and it does not dissasemble for cleaning. There are other professional flip-over models that start around $300 and go way up. We might get the Waring but not the pro models.

measure_twice, $300!!! That's a little out of my waffle iron budget. I don't really understand the ones that flip over, and they look like they'd take up a lot of cupboard space.
I saw a picture of a new Cuisinart model(actually 2 models). It is soooo nice looking! I am trying not to be seduced by its looks!
