Can't seem to get Adobe Flash 10 downloaded.

Hi Everyone!

I was told to come to Garden Web's Computer Forum because "There is always nice people there to help you" so here I am.

I hadn't been online for awhile and last night when I finally had a couple extra free hours I went to a few of my favorite haunts.

The sites would have a message stating that I now needed Adobe Flash 10 to view their site.

PhotoBucket's message said I now needed the Flash 10 to download photos.

A friend of mine on FaceBook sent me a short video but I couldn't see it because there was a message stating I needed Flash 10 to view the video.

So I went to Adobe and clicked the download button for the Free Flash 10 (and made sure to UNclick the add-on McAfee protection).

A message came up that I needed to disable my computer's security so I assumed that meant I had to disable my Free AVG 8 and my Windows Firewall---- I did.

I started the download of Flash 10 and everything looked normal.

The download message said it was done and to close the message box----I did.

I shut down the computer, restarted it, went to Facebook and again got the message that I needed Flash 10.

Went to PhotoBucket and again got the message that I needed Flash 10 to download my photos.

I went searching for Flash 10 on my computer and found the file. Tried to open it but I got a message that said I didn't have the program to open it.

Also, since I downloaded Flash 10 last night (or maybe I didn't---who knows? lol) my computer is very VERY Sluggish.

Before trying the Flash 10 download I had been zipping along with no problems at all.

Can anyone help me with this downloading of the Adobe Flash 10? I'd really REALLY appreciate it.

First, in the Control Panel take a look at Program and Features(Add and Remove). The appearing list will tell you what version of Flash is installed.

Second, what browser are you using? Flash is a dedicated plug-in. A user must install the proper version using that browser. If you use more than one browser you will have to download multiple upgrades, again using the proper browser for each upgrade.

Finally, what site are you downloading from?.

I was trying to download from:

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_10.1_for_Windows_Internet_Explorer&p=Google_Toolbar_6.5&d=McAfee_Security_Scan_Plus&os=XP&browser=ie&type=activex

I made sure it was a download for Windows XP. Made sure I had enough room to download it.

I am using IE8. I only use my AOL for email because I've had it set up since 1997 and I am too lazy to go around changing my email addy with all that have it for social and business. So I wanted the flash player to load for IE8 as that's the browser I use for all my searches/internet activity.

I did just recently add service pack 3 to my computer and the first time I tried to download it I had problems.
That's the first time my friend told me about this site here at GW. I ended up being able to get the service pack 3 on my second try.

I tried a second time with Adobe Flash 10 and then again a third time but even though I get the message box that says it's been downloaded, I see that it's nowhere in the Add/Remove section.

Even with Flash, I think there may be some sites that won't work right in FireFox. For them, FireFox has an extension (aka add-on) called IE View, which I like very much. You can right click and chose "View in IE" from the menu and that particular site will open up right IE while you still have FF open, and then videos and other things such as recalcitrant "submit" buttons and the like will work fine. I am using the original IE View developed by Paul Roub, but it is hard to find at the Extensions site. If you search for IE View, it is on page 5 of the results, so I'll give the URL here. There is also an extension called IE View Lite, which is supposed to have the same features and take less space. Just now I also found something called IE Tab, which looks useful, but I haven't used it yet. Alternate to Adobe Flash for YouTube Vids ?

Hi, grandms Yeah, since my main interest is in YouTube vids at this point, I was hoping to avoid downloading a whole separate program for this. It seems that not all YT videos are html5, so I may start to play one in Opera (with the WebM Plus extension) and it will not play correctly. By the same token, when I open a video in FF or Comodo [Chrome] and right-click the video area, it will often give menu options for Adobe Flash Player. I suppose at this point it's a matter of waiting for YT to get everything switched over to html5 format. (Can they 'retrofit' videos for that, or will videos already made not be upgraded ?) At that time I imagine YT users won't need the Adobe player any longer and will only have YT's own player ?? Oh, well. I'll keep playing around with this.... (It's a slow start to the new year.) :-)

DA, watch that thinking while eating lunch...it's bad for the digestion! However it is much appreciated. Below are the answers to your questions. 1. Have you tried FF bare boned with not add-ons to see if this occurs? Ans. Yes 2. Have you tried a prior version of FF? Ans, Yes, just a few minutes ago. I un-installed ver 11.0 and installed the older 10.0.2 in it's place. I also un-installed Flash Player and re-installed that again. ...still the same results after shutting down and re-starting! 3. I might uninstall flash player with their uninstall program/tool then...

Manually download to your desktop and install flash player(s) after a reboot, making sure to close any running instant messaging or other programs that might use flash first.

In other words: THANK YOU!!!!!
No more messages anywhere telling me I need Flash 10 to view what's on the screen and I can see everything I had been wanting to see.

Manual Download--never knew that existed - who'd a thought?! LOL
