Thunderbird Email Addresses

I need help with the email address folder on Thunderbird. This is a relatively new computer and I imported the Thunderbird addresses from the previous one using a LDIF file.

These imported into Thunderbird on the new computer as "Thunderbird Addresses 5-12-14" (hereafter TA). There is another address heading titled "Personal Address Book" (PAB) which is blank.

When I want to send someone an email, I must first go into the TA file, highlight an address and then select "Write" from the menu above. This has been OK to date.

However, I'm going to change my email address and would like to send that info to multiple addresses using Bcc. I can't do that in one easy step with the TA file; it will only use "To" and then I must go to each addressee and change the "To" to "Bcc".

If I could get those addresses into the PAB, I could use the "Bcc" option from the start.

I've tried exporting the current TA file, again as LDIF, and then importing it with the PAB highlighted but it doesn't go there; it make a duplicate TA file.

I finally phrased my question so that Google found a similar query and solution (from 2006) that still worked 8 years later! In case this might help another user, here are the step from the Moderator at MozillaZine.

Ã¢ÂÂClick on the imported address book name in the left hand pane. Now click on any name in the right hand pane and then use menu path Edit->Select All, or press Ctrl-A. Now drag and drop the data from the imported address book to the Personal Address Book. Once you have confirmed that everything has copied over properly you can delete the imported address book.Ã¢ÂÂ

I would add that this didn't work smoothly until I deleted special lists/groups. Once they were removed, the whole address book previously under the Ã¢ÂÂThunderbird AddressesÃ¢ÂÂ name quickly and correctly transferred to Ã¢ÂÂPersonal Address BookÃ¢ÂÂ. I'm a happy camper.

Thanks zep516 for the link. That is the information that I needed. Ravencajun.. I do know about the bbc but when I typed in Westcoasters and included myself I saw all the addy's when the email came to me and I really prefer not to send other addy's on to everyone on the list. It IS a very strange situation, indeed. And here's some more weirdness. None of the e-mails stay on the server...I double checked and everything was downloaded, per the settings. When I first started looking for a prog to replace WLM, I started using Outlook....but the e-mails were disappearing from the Inbox. I thought it was a problem with Outlook and even posted a query here on the forum. Never solved that issue, but disliking WLM more as time went on, I gave up on Outlook and thought I'd try Thunderbird. Then the same thing started happening! I had made TB the default and set WLM to NOT check automatically for mail....BUT...when I would open WLM to look at something in a folder there, it would check for mail on Startup and all my e-mails would show up. That's when all the messages in TB would disappear. When I realized this was happening, I opened Outlook, sent some test messages there and watched as they disappeared before my eyes when I opened WLM. Do you think maybe I'm incorrect about the mail staying on the server? Wouldn't I see it there when I go online to check?

Yep, erased the saved PW2 and tried to send an email, was offered a chance to inter PW1 and the transmission of the email went. Checking Options/security I don't find PW1 saved, I may need to click on "save password" on the next use. Thanks, this comphelp has been helpful as always.
