AVG Help Please.........

I must be missing something. I have changed to AVG antivirus. I can't find any place to schedule a check of my computer just once a week. It has itself scheduled to do this every day. I don't want it to run that often.

It has a box that comes up and says I have to buy their program to schedule anything different. I had AVG years ago and was happy with it but I'm not happy now if it is going to run the check every day.

The updates are different.....they can come anytime.

Any answers? Thanks!!

I don't have mine scheduled to do anything... I check, at least twice a day, for updates and manually run a full system scan every week or so. I also scan anything new I get, as soon as I get it, before opening it... That goes for new programs and CD's...

Thanks Rita. I was afraid that is what I would have to do. I always scan anything I save too and I'm glad it will do that and also check my email.

When I had AVG on my computer years ago you could set it to do scanning weekly or whenever. I guess it's like so much these days, they want you to buy their program so they give you as little as possible.

AVG is an anti-virus program and is designed to stop virus like trojans and worms. Spam is junk mail that comes in email. If Avg discovers a virus during a scan, it will be sent to the virus vault. Smart choice to dump NAV, one of the worst.

Woah now! I would not say that. Only one anti spyware is barely enough. Most people install 2 or 3 as these do not normally run unless to set them to run. Having more than one of these allows you to use either and if in doubt use both at any given time. There are many free ones to choose from, all with inherent strengths and weaknesses. There are also too many sound alikes which are bad news indeed so tread warily when deciding. Here are a few reputable ones I either do or have used on my computers Spywareblaster Spybot Search & Destroy Superantispyware AdAware 2007 I also had the free AVG anti spyware program installed and was quite happy with that. We'll see how good the reports are on version 8 of their Anti virus with anti spyware built in, hopefully it will be as good as both running separately.

Yeah, a lot of free programs are like that, they give you the basics and make you pay for the extra bells and whistles... I don't mind, as long as they remain free... This way it makes me feel as if I'm in control and participating in keeping my machine safe... And it makes me feel I'm doing something useful with the computer... LOL

I use AVG too and for a long time I would get a mssg. to restart computer after downloading updates, but don't get that anymore. It changes from ghost back to full color without restart. It seems to be working fine. Is it? Thanks, Sandy

By default AVG is set to run a scan at 8 a.m. local time every day. This can be changed as to the timing each day. Why would you object to the program looking after you by doing a daily scan? An awful lot of nasty things not covered can happen over the span of a week.

Hmmmm, guess my tech shut it off because both the thingies in the Scheduler are disabled... But I do have it set to scan ALL files so it lets me know if I run across any thing bad...

Owbist....when it scans it slows everything down....not as bad as Norton's did but something I don't like every day. I assume that AVG would pick up something that was nasty as I'm working or playing on the computer. I have other programs running like Spyware Blaster etc.

I schedule mine to run at lunch time every day so I don't have to sit there and get frustrated with the slow down...lol

There you go, Ladybyte has it sorted out, select any time you feel the computer will be on but you may not be there working with it. I have mine set to run at 3 a.m. as my computer runs 24/7, no hindrance then.

How do you change the scheduler? Mine scans everday at start-up. I have 2 hd's and it takes over 2 hrs!

I have the free version. Is paid better?

right click on the avg icon in the systray. Click launch control center. At the bottom of the dialog box click on scheduled tasts. click on test plan in basic mode to highlight it then click on edit schedule. Pick a time when you want the test to run or a time when the computer won't be on and then remove the check in the if missed, start immediately on startup box and you can run the test when and if you feel like. Paid version is probably better, but the free version has done the job for me.

Dang if I must be missing out on some really exciting stuff............

This thing has been off line less than 8 hours total in 14 months......It has no security software installed at all. It runs 3 and 4 browsers with as many as (new record for me) 3 browsers 17 windows 110 tabs, all at the same time all day all night each and every day and night.

Just how exciting is doing scans and installing/updating AV software anyway? It must be better than sex seeing as to how much time and money and effort folks put into it. But since 1992, way back in the days of BBS's and AOL was 24 hrs free and $.10 a minute thereafter, never, not even once, any virus, trojan, worm, rootkit, nada/zip/zilch......

It is in the end rather amusing to those who don't have to concern themselves with such things., I have solved the viral problem for a few folks, but those who think that from their vast collection of IT wisdom and experience that the solution is somehow something less than their OS that is causing all the issues are on there own.

One would think that for the price one pays for the most prvelant of OS's, that one would be getting a secure and robust product. Wait until the bills for "Vista" security start rolling in.....For your $239 new Vista system, you'll soon get to buy all sorts of new and marginally effective software that needs constant maintainence and updating.
