slow...I tried these things

I thought I posted this last nite...don't know what happened- My computer is slow. I have emptied the cookis, temp files and history. I have run the antispyware, run a complete check and found 'no problems'. There are 2 programs running- this one and another. What else should I be doing. Oh- when it runs slow it might take up to about 45-60 seconds to go through, then the next might be really fast. I am not going to sites where there are 'movie clips'- any thing that has to downlaod any kind of site that needs to be buffered.

Also- when I clear the history.cookies/temp files, does this get rid of things like updated things- Adobe9, AVG updates? Thanks.

What Operating System are you using??? What type of internet connection do you have, Cable,DSL, Dialup????
How much memory does your system have?????

How is the computer connected? cable modem & Router, or Dial up?

When you say slow you mean the opening of web pages correct?

Nope haven't tried them but you can make something for free if you get sodas or water in plastic bottles. I have done this primarily for tomatoes but don't see why it wouldn't work for other plants. Take 2 or 3 liter soda bottles and drill holes every inch or so down one side of the bottle. Dig a hole next to your plant and insert the soda bottle into the hole with the holes facing towards the plant. I normally submerge the bottle so that the neck is all that is above ground. When you want to water the plant, use a hose or watering can and pour the water into the bottle. The water will fill the bottle and come out the holes underground at a rate dependent on how large you drill the holes. This way all the water goes to the root zone with no runoff. You can also add liquid fertilizer and have it directly at the root zone. The cap can be used to keep bugs and other debris out of the bottle. For longer term usage, you may want to wrap landscape fabric around the bottle before submerging it in the ground to keep soil from backfilling the holes you drilled in the side of the bottle.

Patti, think of it this way....the dark green stems are left on to protect the tender part from damage and dessication. I've heard some TV cooks remark about freezing those stems for use when making stock. I've not done that but it sounds like a good idea. I save shrimp shells for stock! I love plums and always look forward to seeing them in the markets. I agree that this 'lemon plum ' is special. Plums don't have a very long shelf life, sadly, and bruise so easily. They shouldn't be picked when they are still little hard because they don't continue to get sweet once picked. They'll soften up but taste mealy and bland. They are picked much too early to withstand the rigours of the commercial market. I haven't gone exploring in the right grocery stores (lately) to find something new to me. I taught a college course one year about exotic, tropical, and world foods and for a fun assignnent challenged the class to find, research, and prepare for eating something that fullfilled the assignnent. It was a night class, so conducive to sharing a little meal. What fun! I had never tasted starfruit until that night....delicious. Students sleuthed out really neat grains, spices, fruits and vegetables. Luckily, our little city was multi-cultural....and larger cities very close by.

Rhome410...why are you cleaning up?!! :-) With 8 children I'd think one of them would be cleaning up! I'm the oldest of 6 and when I was growing up we kids rotated having dish duty for a week each. My mom did all the cooking until she started working outside the home when I was in 6th grade or so (my youngest sister was in Kindergarten). Come to think of it, most of the chores were done by us kids...they were broken down into 6 sets of chores & we each had a particular chore set for a week. Cotehele...one of the advantages of drawers, IMHO, is that they have higher sides that help keep things from falling off when pulling them out. However, to each his own! We have almost all drawer bases in our new kitchen with the exception of the "Pet Center" that has 2 FE pullouts + drawer--we'll be removing the pullouts (was supposed to be full-height/no shelves or drawer, but KD ordered incorrectly), sink bases, and two 6" filler pullouts. I do think Jessie21 has a point though...I think the two pullouts flanking our cooktop do look better than if I had had all drawers on that side. (The other side is broken up w/DW, sink base, & trash pullout) Things I do not recommend: regular shelves (adjustable or not!) in base cabinets (obvious, I know!) shallow cabinet above refrigerator...even if you have to pull a 12" deep one out to make it flush w/your refrigerator, do it! not having a utility cabinet for broom/mop/dustpan/etc. We tried to fit one in, but couldn't so now I'm trying to figure out how best to put them in our step-in pantry. We had them in our previous pantry but they were always in the way. I'm trying to figure out a better method for handling them this time other than just mounting them on the wall next to the shelves or on the door (our door has a frosted glass inset so there's no place to hang them there.)

My husband gave me a beautiful string of pearls with a saphire clasp for christmas last year...guess I'm old lady :) But then my newest piece of jewelry is probably 1950 with most of it being 1880's...so perhaps I"m just an old lady at heart :) I love jewelry with history. Sell it and enjoy the vacation...and know that the person who buys it is probably someone like me who will cherish it as much as the original family member of yours did. As to purging...well frankly, I like stuff :oP I love all the stuff ya'll donate to charity because I haunt the goodwill and habitat store looking for it. I use it daily and it makes me feel good. But that said...I rather enjoy purging too, but perhaps that's linked to the fact that I bought a huge house full of someone elses "stuff". I happily donate items to habitat. I like the tax deduction, and I love the feeling of doing something positive for a charity I support. I also do put things outside with a "free" sign (because I think it's cute how people will take ANYTHING!...no one does that in Alaska) but most of those are children's things (which must be taken during school hours so DS does not see it LOL). That reminds me...I have a slide for free to put out tomorrow when he's napping LOL My one hoarded...hang on, I don't know, thing is my son's cloths and cloths I purchased for a set of twins we lost. I thought we were going to adopt or have another child and now that we've give up on that I have to open the boxes. I have literally dozens of large boxes full of lovely cloths, regular stuff, and brand new things for the babies we expected. I know I have to get to that stuff...it takes up a huge amount of space, both physically and emotionally, but I haven't quite gotten into the zone to be able to do that one. Maybe we should make a pledge...those of us who have some purging to do...I'm peronally going to get through those cloths and give them to someone who needs them within the first quarter of 2011. Jak...maybe you should empty the barn by then LOL Ok that's probably asking too much heh heh

there are many ways to be slow exactly what are you meaning? shutting down, restarting, opening web pages, shutting web pages, opening programs etc

and what scans and or programs have you run?

Sorry- I forgot to be more specific. I have Acer Travelmate, win xp, how much ram? not sure, but I know it is small. I mean slow when going from site to site. Even when on this site, but want to go to next post/thread.
I will go to where ravencajun suggested. Any comments welcomed!

OK- I went to the site you provided and followed the steps. When it came to disk defrag, I did what it said to do- the screen came up that said it was defrag 'c'- I had 685 left, and in Acerta 99%. It started to defrag 'c', and the green, blue and red 'lines' started to go across the screen, stating that 1% were being defrag- then nothing- it stopped. What to do now? Do my 'favorites' list take up too much space? I have 448ram, satellite dish

Sometimes defrag should be run from safe mode. Do you know how to enter safe mode?

Here is how restart the computer now keep tapping the f8 key you will see a screen called the advanced options menu,once you see the screen use the arrow keys on the key board to select the option "Safe Mode" and hit enter the computer will go into safe mode and look a little different but pretty much works the same go through the exercise of doing a defrag again if you have never done a defrag this could take quite a while sometimes it will appear stuck at 10% but let it run you can do it before bed and just let it go. If you have questions about safemode ask.

be sure if you run a defrag that you have all your other programs off in other words don't try to be doing anything else while it does the defrag that will slow it down, turn off the screen saver that can cause it to stop, anything that could start running could interfere with it which is why as Zep said sometimes it is better to run it in safe mode so that just the minimal is running.

Sometimes they will not run if you do not have enough free space on your hard drive also.

a defrag will take a long time especially on a pc that has not been defraged in a long time so you might want to let it run at night, you can also disconnect it from the internet while running the defrag.
