powder room vanity help

We have a powder room with a 48" niche for a sink. Problem is that it is exactly 48" whereas all vanities in this size have a 49" top. We were thinking of using a 36" vanity (37" top) which looks like a piece of furniture in antique white (same vanity as weedyacres if anyone remembers hers). Question, Will this look odd since there will be a 6" gap to either side of the vanity in the niche?

We are currently looking for a powder room vanity as well (furniture-like piece). We were at HOBO (in chicago) this weekend where they have fantastic deals. They had several that were a bit odd sized, like 39" with granite or marble top which might look better. I don't think it would look odd, particularly because it is a powder room. although, sounds like this a 'built-in' area into the wall?

Here is a copy of the powder room plan and a picture of the area I took during drywall hanging. Would it look weird if the vanity does not fill the alcove/nook/niche in its entirity?

There is no question that the vanity is very traditional, and certainly not simple in its lines. However, I am not one who says everything in the house has to be the same. One nice thing about a powder room is that it can be a 'fun room', a little jewel that offers another feel in the home. So, I think indeed it could work, and be very fun. As for the wall stencil, while it feels more contemporary because of the black and white, the design feels traditional, and could very easily work in the space. In fact, the design of the individual unit in the stencil kind of picks up on the center design of the cabinet door. I would think about adding light fixtures (ceiling if you have one, and over the vanity) that have a modern take on traditional lighting. We need something behind the wall mounted faucets. So it will be a block of accent tile. Looking at my samples - the right does seem to have some green. The left is a milky white with a few grey specks. DH likes the left but I think the pattern will be too busy with the counter.

I will try some tile with black. @Carrie B Thanks...seems I see it with the black a lot but we really wanted the brushed nickel. I love that advice also! @shirlpp I would need to find the dimensions but it's pretty small. I was thinking of wallpaper! I think I'll choose the tile first, then see about wall paper. @eld6161 Thanks, we've always loved green. Would be fun if it became popular. I will do that Google search.

I like Artemis78 suggestion of a 30” vanity with 2” fillers on the sides. You can never have too much storage! I purchased Bertch USA vanities for my bathrooms, great quality with soft closing drawers. Check out their website. For the vanity tops I purchased remnant quartz pieces from a local stone yard. Best of luck in your renovation journey!

I don't see any problem at all with the vanity not being wall-to-wall.

I actually think it looks better when the furniture-like vanities have a bit of breathing room. Maybe shop for a 42" wide one. Once you count the overhang of the top, you would have a couple of inches on each side.

Or consider ordering a 36" vanity with 6" pullouts (think spice pullouts) on either side. Or even open shelves. Those little pullouts and shelves are great in a bathroom. (although a 6" open shelf has pretty small useable space.)

Sturdy,

I jealously guard all available storage space. If you like the 36" vanity, would it be possible to install it to one side, and gain close to 12" for shelves or a linen tower on the other side?

But, then the furniture look probably wouldn't be the best option, but there do seem to be lots of 36" vanities out there. (I know, cuz I'm still looking for a 48" one!)

If you don't fill the nook with a vanity, then consider how difficult it will be to clean the floor on either side of the vanity.

Thanks for all the input. I have thought of the difficulty in cleaning around the smaller vanity (and I do not like cleaning bathrooms). A 42" might look better but they are harder to find. I am amazed at how pricey vanities are. If you don't go with plain jane brown oak or white, you might as well take out a loan to get one. Does anyone have any pictures of a vanity not using the whole space in a nook/alcove type of situation? As they say: a picture is worth a thousand words.
