Laptop Hard drive upgrade

Hello all,

I am going to upgrade my laptop to a higher capacity hard drive.

How do I get (clone) all my programs, operating systems, setups, files to my new drive? Thru the USB connection?

I have a Dell Inspiron.

The easiest way to do it is to get a drive image software program and image your existing drive to your backup device. Then take the existing drive out, put the new drive in and use the imaging software to restore the contents to the new drive.

Be careful when you restore from the image to the new drive. Some imaging programs require a parameter in order to use more space than the old drive used.

The best known drive imaging program is probably Norton Ghost. Another well known product is Acronis True Image. There are others out there as well. I used Drive Image from Terabyte Unlimited to upgrade my laptop to a larger drive.

you need to use a program like Acronis True Image to do that. There is one open source program that is free,

If you are having someone replace the drive for you most offer that option for an added price.
I still make extra backups of my data to cd or flash just in case.

There was a size limit with early versions of XP, which is what you're probably running into if you using the original install disc. How are you installing Vista? If from a disc, just point Vista to the drive as part of the install and it will format it for you. Otherwise, assuming you're running XP with Service Pack 3, just format it from inside of Windows.

Here is a nice graphical tutorial on how to do what bpgreen did with the computer for those who might wish to try it. I might have to consider that as I now have 2 physical drives both with 2 partitions on them. Interesting, thanks for posting that info.

There's a similar package from Apricorn (I've seen it on Newegg) that also includes a drive image program that will transfer the OS and boot sector to the new drive and resize the partition for you.

Before you do this, I would recommend doing a complete cleanup of your harddrive, so you are not copying and transfering a bunch of junk to the new one ie: Do a System Clean in System Tools, run a couple of different antispyware programs, defrag HD
