PDF problems

Firefox, XP - every time I try to open a PDF I get a blank screen. I have PDF download on FF but it doesn't do anything. It keeps saying its converting but never does.

I just want to open and read something in PDF. I have Acrobat Reader installed but that doesn't seem to work. I really don't understand how these things work but I need to be able to read PDF's. I don't need to convert anything, I just can't read anything in PDF.

That blank screen thing happens to me now and then. Perhaps it's the same as is happaening with you.

In my case, the reason why is that some such files will open in IE and that window will be hidden behind the current blank window. (Don't know why.)

When that occurs, the IE icon appears in the quick-launch toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks mikie! I went to the search page and didn't take long to get a headache. I think this is going to be way out of my realm. First I changed a Word document into a pdf file and now I gotta embed it back into a html page. When I add the file to an html page, all I get is the page with my background scheme showing. Somehow, this was not what I had in mind. I know it's possible because I see it every day, but I'm just not smart enough to figure it out.Thanks again! Ida

It sounds like two issues are going on there - getting photos off your phone, and files having their extensions changed. For the latter, first you need to determine if the files were actually changed to pdfs or just the extensions changed (the dot and last three letters, as in .pdf, or .doc) Try right clicking on one file, choosing "rename" and changing the extension to what is was originally - .doc or whatever. Don't worry about the warning - you can change extensions as many times as you like. If it opens you're going to have to rename each file by renaming the extension. Programs that can rename, like the one included with "FileMenuTools", can do that in batches but if you're not a bit experienced it might feel a bit challenging. If it still doesn't open after changing the extension, something deeper has happened - the file itself may have been altered. If that's the case, I would guess you might have some sort of virus and I would do a completely scan with an antivirus and/or anti malware program. I wish I could help. This area is not one of my areas to work with, I'd rather have a blue screen issue LOL... Can you get to a print shop and have them do it.

You do realize that PDF files have to be downloaded for you to view them? Your firewall and/or anti-virus, if kept up to date, should catch any malicious executable embedded, and trap it. Just because a script is embedded in as file doesn't mean it is malicious.

Yes, Zep, that worked. I think I found the problem. I had PDF Download add-on with FF which was the default. I deleted it and now PDF's open in Adobe.

Problem solved...I think!
