May need hood options (modern aire may not go)

I have really benefited from all the posts I have read here and I thank all of you for the information.

I am going to install a 36' Fratelli Onofri in our new construction. Kitchen has a cathedral ceiling...I don't have the exact height and so I don't know the length of 'chimney' that the wall mounted hood will need.

I would like to get the modern aire ps20 hood and will use the fantech fkd 8xl remote inlinline blower (located in the attic).

My problem is the hood only comes with 12' of 'chimney' and it costs $15 per inch to extend it. I may have about 7 or so feet and that just makes the darn setup really a budget killer.

Any other hood choices that you can rec. that will allow me to put in my own blower and have a similar style? I hope that all of the collective research here will really help me out. I don't think I can look anymore online! Ive got a serious case of bug-eyes!

I had a similar challenge when I put in our Wolf in our last house. The problem was the SS "chase" which is the decorative cover (as you probably know) was about 2 feet and cost several hundred dollars. Each section came in 12 inch sections I think (and were EXPENSIVE)... I just remember needing less than even footage for my configuration. The next problem was that each extension piece created a visible (and IMO unsightly)seam. The dealer suggested I go to a good sheet metal fabricator (which i was going to have to do anyway to get one of the extension pieces cut down) and have one custom built which I did. In summary the cost was less than half and I was able to exactly spec the size. In my case I had the chase built exactly the width, depth and height of the hood resulting contant lines all the way to the ceiling. If memory serves me, the chase was 36 inches wide, about 12 inches deep and 42 inches high and the whole thing cost me about $200 and most ofthat was labor. If you want more the chimney look, then you would simply have the chase built smaller in width...probably just enough to cover the actual duct work.

Another option if you want more the cylinder duct look to the ceiling is to use commercial grade HVAC duct. I believe it comes in stainless, several diameters and sections up to about 10 feet. This stuff is not the same as the galvanized snap together stuff most people are familiar with or you see in residential work. It is very hefty and good looking.

Anyway, a good HVAC person should be able to help you or recommend soomeone.

One of the reasons I did not go with Modernaire is that I wanted seamless construction. They offered true seamless at a huge upcharge. I am now bemused to see that they offer "simulated" seamless construction. Somewhere along the way I read that "TIG" construction is best -- you might want to find out whether whomever you want to go with uses TIG. I think there are several good blower/motor suppliers. Independent, EBM Pabst (which is what Modernaire uses for their internal motors, and others. I needed an assembly that vents straight back. Prestige got many favorable reviews -- Trevor seemed to think it was among the best too. Ultimately I went with Vogler Copper for the hood -- their prices were good and they were able to build a custom liner to accommodate the Prestige 1200 CFM unit. I have not gotten my hood yet but am expecting the photos for final sign off tomorrow. Don't neglect to look at smaller suppliers who can build in the liner/ motor assembly of your choice.

erikanh: that's the first picture of your hood/range I have seen, and it rocks! Totally different look than our kitchen but I love it. The way you've assembled the critical elements of cooking into a compact, incredibly efficient layout is fabulous. It makes me want to drop everything and start cooking right now. And, of course, the hood is gorgeous. Great job. rgjem: you are asking the right questions. Clearly if you are ducting straight out the wall, with only a very short run of duct, there is little advantage of an external blower, as the distance is too short to give you the noise reduction you'd want from an external blower. The alternative is to run duct all the way up to the attic and roof. That's what we did. That allowed us to use a Fantech inline blower and silencer, and the result is an unbelievably quiet hood. I am totally ecstatic with it, but others might not find it quite as ideal. The duct installation was a nightmare, involving many hours of HVAC consultation. The performance of the blower is reduced by the long duct run, though the layout of our range (which is in an entirely enclosed alcove, which greatly enhances hood performance) compensates totally: I can sear at max temp and have not a wisp of smoke escape. For me it was a no brainer but many others, who would prioritize cost, and maximum cfm performance, would choose otherwise. I am going to take the liberty of quoting a recent email from Jeff Herman at Modern Aire which I think is the clearest explanation of the pros and cons of internal vs external vs inline blowers (Jeff was aware I might do this). It was directed at another potential customer who had corresponded with me, thus the reference to my (Mark's) hood: Our hoods are supplied for use with our internal motors 600 Â 2400cfm, Abakka exterior blowers 1000 and 1400cfm, and Fan-Tech inline blowers so switching for the fan is not a problem. If you are planning on using the Fan-Tech inline I highly recommend using the silencer. It makes a very dramatic difference in regards to air and motor noise at higher speeds. The Abakka exterior blower is the quietest option we have going right now, but the performance is not as good as the inline IMO. If pure performance is the most important then our internal blowers are the best way to go, they are louder in comparison to MarkÂs set up, but are moving more air then the inline or exterior blowers at 1200CFM. Our internal blowers compensate for higher static pressure loads and do not slow down when connected to ducting making them a great choice for super long duct runs or duct runs with many turns or transitions" HTH

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, but as it turned out, Sony decided not to send anyone to Toronto and is going to let the staff in Toronto work it out on their own without a director. I guess that is one way for them to save money. So I will wait for warmer weather before I visit Toronto, and Kevin will not be there, unless he goes with me. Last week a friend asked me to go to Brazil with him some time next year after April. He has to settle an estate there, and he knew that I could take the time off. We'll see if that materializes. I would like to visit Brazil, but I've been afraid to go because I do not speak Portuguese, but my friend does, and that would make me feel more comfortable. He will be mainly going to Rio de Janeiro, but would be making side trips to Petrópolis and other places.

How could I forget wine tasting? There are some good spots downtown, but I prefer Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, where many excellent central coast wines are made. It's also quite beautiful. If you're there in late May, you may also be able to do some early blueberry picking while in Los Olivos. Nojoqui Falls is a wonderful relaxing spot for hiking and seeing a waterfall. Nearby is a little farm where you can pick your own veggies and berries and pay by the honor system. The experience is sure to be a wonderful memory. This is all in north county, about 40 or so minutes north of SB, but in my opinion well worth a day of your time if you'll be in the area for a week. for boutiques and leisurely walking, coast village road in Montecito is great. Some of the restaurants I recommended are within walking distance or actually on CV road. Butterfly beach is also within walking distance. Very nice beach. One of my favorite spots in Montecito is the San ysidro ranch where you can go to the stonehouse upstairs for lunch or dinner, or the plow and Angel downstairs for dinner(try to request a table near the fire). Beautiful grounds and gardens. I've seen the chef walk out to pick fresh produce. Have a wonderful time!

I had not thought of having somebody make the thing for me locally! I love that idea! I will check with James (HVAC) tomorrow.

Do you think it will be difficult to have the ss match...there are different levels of "shinyness" or polish to ss isn't there?

Also, did you check out the prices for a total custom unit by Modern Aire? Then you wouldn't have to worry about the match. I remember being pleasantly surprised by the pricing for mine 7 years ago, though I had very different issues. Couldn't hurt to ask them :)

I think all their stuff is done in a custom way....that's why they are able to do the chase to the exact length that you want...only at 15 dollars an inch!

Believe it or not, there was no difference in finish. I specified 18 gauge brushed stainless and it was identical to the finish of the Wolf hood I matched it to. I will agree not all stainless finishes are exactly the same though, maybe I just got lucky. You should be able to get a very close if not almost identical match I would think. According to the Wolf dealer I used, it was SOP for them to have the chase built locally.

The really find grade stainless is 304. The 430 is less costly and not as nice.
