So I'm nearly sold on cast iron, now how do I get it in my house?

Really, the things are SO heavy! I'm thinking of getting an alcove tub with an apron at a salvage yard. The people at the salvage yard said they'd help me load it in the truck, but I'm wondering, realistically, what I need to plan on to get it from the truck, through the back yard, up 4 steps into the house, and into the bathroom. How do people do it?

Couple of strong guys and an appliance hand truck and you should be fine. Don't let the weight and difficulty of a one-time move put you off cast iron - it's worth the effort!

A buddy and I wrestled a 320lb cast iron tub by hand up a "winder" staircase for my remodel project just last weekend. I wouldn't want to do it again but I'm glad we stayed with the cast iron. (My buddy wasn't too amused when I called him the next day and told him that we needed to return the tub because it was the wrong model - can't understand why he lost his sense of humor over a little ole bathtub.)

I think the tub probably is cast iron. When I tap on the slope of the back, I hear more of a bell sound. The tiling on the apron may be muffling any sound when I tap on the sides of the tub. On the drain cover, it says "Made in Taiwan," and it looks like cast iron tubs may have been imported from Taiwan in the 80's. The main incentive for the bathroom remodel is a serious leakage problem with the shower pan in the stall shower. A secondary reason is that the entire layout has never been ideal. Third reason is that all the small tile and grout is a pain to clean. Fourth reason is the decor (tile) is dated. I don't know if it's possible or cost-effective to remove the tiling around the tub without damaging it. It would be challenging to design a new bathroom around the old tub with the existing tile. I need to operate the window; it is the only source of ventilation in the bathroom. Changing the layout would provide easier access to the window. I've thought of several alternatives - add a fan, add another window, change the window configuration (awning-type window), or find a window treatment that provides privacy without sacrificing ventilation. While the exterior length of the tub is 66", the interior length is 44". The depth is 15". I'm 5'1" and this size works for me, but probably not for the average-size adult. My teenage son likes to take baths. He's a foot taller than me and has long legs. I took him with me to try out some longer tubs - even some of the 72" tubs are too short for him, depending on the slope of the sides. Given that I'm accustomed to a cast iron tub, will I be disappointed if I replace it with a new acrylic / fiberglass tub? There are some other types of materials, such as Victoria & Albert tubs and WetStyle tubs; I'm thinking about looking at these.

I too wash my cast iron pans with soap and water. I would never just wipe them. YUK!!! I too agree, get yourself a good thick-bottomed stainless steel pan. I would never cook eggs in cast iron. Cast iron is great for searing, but for a more gentle cooking, I go for stainless. I think you're crazy not to use a non-stick surface. If you do not use metal utensils with teflon and buy a good quality pan, it should last for a few years. You can pick up a great little omelet size pan for $20. The testing has shown that if you use a medium or lower setting on non-stick, there are no fumes released. You really shouldn't be cooking on a higher setting with this type of pan anyway. That's what stainless and cast iron are for. Good luck and good cooking.

Well, he's already at it. My father is a bit of a nut, and even though a realtor friend who toured the house the other day told him not to do certain things, he already has. He pulled off the dark paneling. The good news is that it was easy to do and he's a great plaster guy. For him painting it would have been harder than fixing it. Oh well. He wants to paint the cabinets, so we'll see how that goes. I told him to keep them in place and just polish up the hardware. It's nice stuff, really, and my realtor friend said people like that stuff (again, the mid-century thing, which I had never heard of). He's a hard guy to stop, my dad. After we had an accepted offer on our house, he kept insisting that I fix the nail pops. Two days before closing he was still insisting. He and my mom watched the kids one night - I came home to a house that had the nail pops fixes. Ugh. I do have a little note regarding THIS wall. The right side would match the left side, had that silly TV framing not been done. We're knocking out that framing, taking the mirrors out of each side, and making each side of the fireplace mirror each other. I should mention that this house is about 5 minutes away from my dad's and my houses. Working on it is easy, but we still do want to get rid of it. It's just keeping my dad - the biggest perfectionist I know - from going nuts.

We do the majority of our cooking in cast iron. We have 2 pans that were my husband’s grandmother’s. And 2 newer pieces we bought. My husband is a freak about them. The newer ones we seasoned when we first got them. Vegetable oil or canola oil and bake in the oven. Then use a lot! I have the lodge scrapers and use those and super hot water to clean. No soap. Maybe once in a while if I feel like it really needs a cleaning. When I do that I tell my husband because he will dry it and then wipe it down with some oil, his favorite now is coconut. My son and daughter are already making noises about who inherits what pan lol.

Dave's right, with enough help your can make it happen. I promise you, the anxiety associated with getting it in is small in comparison to the satisfaction you will have for MANY years with your cast iron tub.

Did you all do anything to make sure your second floor could handle the weight of a cast iron tub? Our kid bathroom has a porcelain-on-steel now, but I'd love to replace it with a cast iron when we do the remodel...is there a deflect-o-meter to find out about these things?

A dolly and a couple of $20 bills usually get it where it needs to be.

i'm in a similar situation - i just found out my air tub is on its way next week... but i don't have any strong friends who can help during daytime hours during the week. do delivery companies offer any solutions typically, or do I need to scour through craigslist & hope i choose a couple careful guys? it only needs to go into the garage, but the bill of lading says it weighs 150lb. i plan to call the freight company next week, but their tracker on their website says it only takes 1 business day and it was picked up today, so i'm kind of panicking. =:o

The delivery company will tell you curbside delivery only. When the drivers arrive give them a good tip and they will bring it inside.

Tub was delivered by the bath place into the house - left in living room then day of install plumber arranged to have 3 guys available to get it upstairs to master bath - all 350#'s
it pays..... to get cast iron!
