Sharing Files between distant computers

I run a small business. My partner lives 2.5 hours away and uses another ISP. We have tried having a central meeting space on Office Live Spaces, but that wasn't perfect for us. GotoMyPC.com is great, but expensive. Now trying Groove, but still trying to figure THAT out! Right now, our identities are switched on Groove. Okay, question is: Does anyone out there have a solution for us to have a central meeting point. Main focus is to share some key files with lists that are updated daily. (Instead of emailing them back and forth.) Both computers use Vista, IE7, Microsoft Outlook.

There's another thread here that talks about Google Docs vs Open Office. I think your situation is one where Google Docs might be a good choice because it allows you both to work on the docs even though you're in separate places.

If you're looking for ways to remotely access a computer, I've had good results using different versions of VNC. I think the last one I used was UltraVNC.

There are some free conferencing programs. Here is a wikipedia article with a chart comparing some conferencing products (some free).

One they didn't have listed is Yugma.

I use Go To My PC and pay $9.95. I love it. I have complete access to my work computer and can print anything from home. I can work on my office computer from any computer anywhere or ISP. I also use Google Docs and that works well but that is for documents. 'Go To' lets me access everything on my office machine.

Pardon me,I don't see how or why you have such a big problem with hard wire system ? I run 15 computers at my home and run 5 different OS . All I did was hook up a router to my DSL conection and then just ran Cat 5 cable to the computers.use cable nails to secure to wall,and done. You now have wired a home network. If you really want to do this, I would gladly talk you thru this. Contact me anytime. Good luck.

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.

You are probably right about ME but whatever the reason it was a major headache. We kept 98 on our old computer until its demise a few years ago. Our other computer was 2000 and I didn't upgrade until XP2. For a non-tech, my workday is spent on my computer. I don't have time, nor knowledge to spend getting my computer to work nice with my software and settings, nor the funds to hire a tech. It took many hours to get everything working the way I needed and wanted. When I sit down at the machine, I need it to do what I want as my day is busy. My computer is networked with my other computer they work well together. I use remote connections from home and can work from here. XP is agreeable and familiar. It is so much more than 98 was. I remember all the 'restarts' and love the stability of XP. I think if I had gone from 98 straight to Vista I probably would enjoy Vista, although what I have seen and read about Vista doesn't inspire me enough to change. I hate MS Office 07. It was forced on me when I purchased this machine a year ago. Why they made the changes they did make no sense. It is non-intuitive and confusing to use. I have decided to stop using it and do all my work on my machine at work which still has 03. I can't express how angry I get each time I need to type a letter on 07. Hate it! Depending on how often and how many files need be swapped you might consider Skype. That way you can talk to each other for free using mike and speakers or a headset and also send files back and forth as you discuss business

Definitely Google Docs ... put the lists in a spreadsheet and restrict access to just the two of you.

It also has a calendar, and with that and SKYPE you can schedule tasks, IM each other ans share documents.

Wow. Thanks for that great info. Google Docs is wonderful!!! It's fascinating that we can see changes being made in real time. By "restricting" do you mean requiring a log-in?
