No ethernet adapter?

My computer was recently fixed after getting a virus and now when I try to connect to the internet it says I do not have an ethernet adapter. I am using Verizon internet. The computer could not connect to the internet when I first got it, but my cousin fixed it and then the internet worked fine. It is a Dell and has Windows XP. Thank for any help.

Verizon Internet what? Wireless connection? How is the computer connected?

devmgmt.msc -----------> COPY AND PASTE that into the runbox. When the device manager opens click the + sign next to Network Adapters tell us the name of it. Or if any red errors are present. If you want you can right click the network adapter choose uninstall. Then reboot the computer.

it sounds like possibly your ethernet card is going bad, they are very cheap and easy to replace so you might want to try that. I have seen them die after a heavy load like you probably had with that ipod. in device manager do you have any yellow flags at all I had my nic card go bad right after they installed my fios, could have been a coinkydink or not so your ipod issue may or may not be related. I went to best buy and got a belkin one and installed it in just minutes. You may want to go to device manager and disable/remove the old one there just prior to install of the new one, it will recognize the new one upon install. This is an example of what you would be looking for, I would go ahead and spend a little more if needed and get the gigabit version nic card so you have it should you need it. Maybe the first thing I would do .. Go into the device manager(right click myComputer & select properties) and look for yellow exclamation or red stop errors. While there under Network Adapters you should see two adapters; One will be your wireless adapter and it probably says 802.11b/g/n and manufacturer name. The other network adapter should say something about 'Ethernet adapter and manufacturer name. Double click the Ethernet adapter and then look around for probably a check box that says something about Disable this device. I would disable that ethernet adapter because you aren't using it... that will stop that Network Cable Unplugged message,,, and might possibly be the conflict - if so you might get lucky and your wifi will connect after a reboot. Ummm, what else might you try. The Event logs in your computer management window might give you a hint what's wrong... thats accessable by right clicking myComputer and select Manage. You say you never have added hardware... hardware that would use an irq would be things like a portable hard drive, a flash memory card, anything usb, a pc-card slot device, a seperate monitor. Try unplugging things attached one by one to see if one of those might be causing the conflict. Hopefully its not your wifi card, but if after trying to eliminate the conflict and nothing else hardware wise stops the error message maybe you could disable the wifi adapter in Device Manager and then if the error message instantly goes away that would be a good indication its bumm or maybe rolling back or reinstalling the driver might fix it.

I am sure you did nothing wrong! Try unplugging the ethernet cable and see if it will start up. Maybe the reason that adapter had a question mark is because the device itself has a problem. If it starts up, you may get a blue screen error stating that Windows did not start properly. Just shut it down again (you'll have to press the power button)then press the button again to start it up. As soon as you see something on the monitor, tap the F8 key repeatedly to get to the advanced startup screen. Arrow down until you have Last Known Good Configuration selected and press the Enter button on the keyboard. This should allow you to start up the pc. Pam

either will work, any pci slot is good for almost the full 1000. you will have had a 10/100 ethernet port that fried if its 5 yrs old. for the 1000 to work at the max speed you need to connect it to nothing but 10/100/1000 network components; switches, routers, modem... all the ether ports need to be 1000.. any one component that its connected to that isnt 1000 slows down the whole LAN to 100,,, or 10 if its really really old stuff.

Under Device Manager I do now have Network Adapters listed. There is one that says Other Devices and when I click the plus sign next to it, it says Ethernet Controller and it has a yellow exclamation beside it.

Before right clicking on the device to uninstall it, click on properties and report back on what the error is. The error will be in a 'code: XX' format. An exclamation point usually always means corrupt driver, or that the device has caused an error (usually due to corrupt drivers).

After you uninstall the device via device manager, reboot the computer and it should re-initialize the device and reinstall the driver accordingly.

It says Device Status the drivers for this device are not installed code 28

What's the make and model of the pc? Looks like you may need to re-install the device.

Did you try to right click it choose un-install and reboot to see if windows will re-install the device.

Uninstalled it and then restarted computer. Found new hardware wizard came up. TRied to install it and it says The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software. The disc for the device drivers and utilites is in the computer.

After you download the file listed at top, put it on a flash drive and follow the directions for installation on the website link.
