Help! 1394 Net Adapter & cable modem?

I recently called my cable company in order to subscribe to high speed internet service through the cable modem. I have a 1394 Net Adapter and a NIVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (I guessed that this is the drivers for the 1394 Net Adapter). I was told by the cable co. that the 1394 Net Adapter is not used for high speed but instead is only used for dial up modem and told me that I need to download drivers or software for the ethernet port to be activated. My computer is a HP 1610n multimedia with windows xp. I do have an ethernet port in the back of my computer and I thought that the 1394 Net adapter and NIVIDIA nForce Networking Controller was for high speed DSL or high speed cable modem. Since I can only get the cable high speed modem service in my area, any info you can give would be highly appreciated. thanks, J.

You should have no problem getting a cable modem hooked up to your computer. First of all, go to device manager and see what it shows under ethernet adapters. If there is one showing and there are no exclamation or question marks, it should be good to go.

If there is none showing in device manager, it may be turned off in the bios because your computer has one built in.

A good cable installer will help get you on the right track.

Thanks Smitty for the response. When I looked into the device manager. the 1394 Net Adapter and the NIVIDIA nForce Networking Controller did show up and they both appear to be on. Also, I did find in the device manager the following: IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers and OHIC IEEE 1394 Host Controllers. But I didn't find anything that said Ethernet adapters under Hardware in the Device Manager. Do I look any place else? I do have the Ethernet port on the back but can you tell me where I would find the Ethernet in my computer system? Also forgive my stupidity but what did you mean by "it may be turned off in the bios". Where do I find the bios? Thanks again. J

Troy, Concrete can cure under water so I don't think it will be a problem... I don't think there is anything in the concrete or the concrete dye that will harm your water since we're talking about such a small quantity. I think I paid $5 or so for the black buckets at our local TruValue Hardware so that tells us that if a local store near you doesn't have them, they can order them... my experience is that it all comes from one or two warehouses anyway. And actually, my local pond store does the same thing using the medium-large size lilly containers. Just fill the whole container if doing it with the much smaller lily containers (versus 5 gal buckets). I guess it go to show you don't need a lot of concrete to make the base. I just used the buckets I used because: A, they were cheaper than the other BLACK containers in my neck of the woods; B, I like the idea of the handle on the buckets (although they are white and I didn't paint or cover'em) for lowering and pulling them about of the water. The other thing I haven't mentioned yet is the dual use of the grey PVC used for the pole. You can use the same setup as a nifty base for a wintertime-used pump or bubbler; because it is a threaded connection not only can you adjust the height of the rod/pole, you can change out the couplers for other fittings. MODIFICATION OF THE BASE FOR A PUMP BASE: Before placing your concrete in the bucket make a small hole in the lower side of the bucket for a barb fitting (this will later attach to a hose coming from a submersible pump). On the other end of the barb fitting inside the bucket (before concrete is added) connect the PVC up with a short straight piece and then an elbow to turn it upward. These can be the more common white PVC since it will eventually be covered with concrete. Then connect the white PVC with the grey PVC; I would suggest using a threaded coupler for this. Then add the wet, dyed concrete mixture. You now have a base with an adjustable PVC pipe to use as a bubbler when you are thru with your netting... but I just make an extra one and keep the pond covered all winter.

Sounds like you already have internet working but your mail settings are off a notch... Perhaps look here.. Open Outlook Express Click on the menu item Tools, then select Accounts Click on the Mail tab if not already selected. Highlight MSN which hopefully is marked default. Click on Properties button. Click on the tab for Connections Now you should see a drop down box, change it to say dial up modem or something similar as apparetnly its trying to use a Network Connection which the norm if you have a high speed connection like dsl or cable. Think you need that box to say use the dial up modem. Hopefully thats the simple fix.

Before you spend any money's - If you have a usb cord that you can borrow that will allow you to move that usb network adapter around a little, you might find it works fine when moved even just a foot or two away from where its at. Also you might install something like inSSIDer and check/watch your signal strength to make sure youre not on a same channel a neighbor is using which will be degrading yours. Yes you absolutely can still connect the pc by use of the ethernet cable from the router and use the laptop wirelessly, that is how most usually do it since the desktop stays put. Mine is that way I have my router and cable modem on the end of my desk so easy access from there to my desktop computers so they are all connected by wire, my netbook and laptop are wireless, but even they can be connected by the ethernet cable should you need to. Before I had my wireless router I had a 25ft ethernet cable that ran from my desk on the baseboard to my recliner where I use my netbook. I buy a lot of my electronics from newegg and they do offer good prices and quick shipping. I also use buy.com quite a bit. You may want to check some of those in comparison to your local store. Also if you have a walmart check there they usually carry these kinds of items and for less. I got my wireless linksys router there. On the usb cards some come with a cord on them so the usb device can be moved around some on the desk which will help with reception sometimes. feel free to ask all you need we will try to answer. I too prefer to buy the same brands when possible it just helps sometimes for compatibility issues.

If you are unfamiliar with the BIOS then do not go there. That is not intended to frighten you, far from it. I usually encourage people to grapple with these beasts but you have a tech visiting in the very near future, he will take care of business for you.

When the tech arrives to install the modem and cable I am sure he will hook you up and ensure the connection works before leaving. As I understand it that is a part of their job otherwise you would have to phone tech support and have them walk you through. That would be bad policy from their standpoint just by the cost factor alone.

As Smitty noted, if you have no yellow exclamation or question marks in your Device Manager you are good to go and can do no more till the tech arrives.

There is a tech scheduled to come isn't there?

The 1394 firewire items normally would have nothing to do with your ethernet adapter that's connected to your dsl or cable modem connection.

Would be an unusual dial up modem that would use a firewire connection too.

Thank you for all yours responses and no owbist I don't have the cable tech scheduled to come set up the cable modem high speed. The reason I don't is because when I called and gave them the info about the 1394 Net Adapter and a NIVIDIA nForce Networking Controller, I was told that this was for the dial up modem and not the ethernet. I expl to them that I did have an ethernet port. They told me that the software or drivers weren't loaded into my computer. However, Hewlet packard tech support said the 1394 Net Adapter and a NIVIDIA nForce Networking Controller WAS the drivers for the ethernet port. I didn't get this and I still would like to know where I could look into my computer and see the info on the ethernet port. The tech said I had to get this before they could set up the cable modem. I know some knowledge about computers, I just need to be guided on how to check my computer to see if I have the drivers etc in the system for the ethernet port that is in the back of the computer. I just need the directions on how to check this. Thanks again, J

OK, linked below are the specs for your confuser. It shows you have an integrated network card. In other words the network card is built into the motherboard. Therefore the drivers will be loaded when the machine was built and it is ready to go.

Go ahead and book the techie.
