Question about cable modems

Have a question about modems and internet access.

I have a cable modem hooked to my main computer downstairs, provided by Comcast,

which also has a router connected for using a laptop wireless.

A computer upstairs has internet through the router. It is slow! This is a new router so it's not old technology. But the computer is about 5 years old and uses a usb wireless adaptor.

I haven't called Comcast but I wonder if I can buy another cable modem, connect it to the cable line upstairs and hook the computer directly to this new modem for direct internet access instead of connecting through the router.

Anyone know.

Would a new usb wireless adaptor help for this computer? Has the technology changed in 5 years for these things?

Comcast would, I'm sure, love to sell me one and raise my monthly fee! LOL
