Thanks, all, for clarifying the modem and helping me make up my mind. I just ordered a Motorola SB5101U. It's the same as what I have from Charter Cable. There's just something about owning than leasing, isn't there. RC, I had a modem problem in March/April. The first two guys did cable stuff although I kept saying it was the modem. It belonged to Charter. The third guy replaced the modem. Charter charged me for three service calls but wiped it out when they finally determined it was their modem. You're right on target. The newly ordered modem has a one year warranty. I plan to remain with Charter so maybe in time it'll work out. Maybe not. Anyway, thanks for everyones input. Gene

Thanks for your responses. I prefer to turn off the cable and computer at night, but DH would rather the modem be left on. In the past I had a problem with "China" and "Russia" attacking/trying to get into my computer on a daily basis as well as some other places. I was able to search the IP addresses and found where they were located. Now that I have Norton and have two IP addresses to get through I do not seem to have a problem. I was afraid if the modem and/or computer was left on that someone could hijack and use my computer. Someone did hijack and use my Yahoo Email address. They sent emails to many people as well as to my husband and my regular email addresses. I do not use my real email address or name when signing up on sites. I never used my husband's or my regular email addresses on the Yahoo Email. Changing the password corrected that. The Yahoo incident made me think someone had invaded my computer rather than just hijacking my Yahoo Email only.

Did you have a question? I've had intermittent bouts of my RR modem not able to connect too. I'd schedule appt. (we're with Time Warner, not Bright House) then cancel because it was back. Friday it went out and I picked up a new modem Sat. which only worked til Sun. It had to be something else. Technician came, checked everything and changed out some old cable connections in basement that could be causing the problem. So far, so good. Don't know what you mean by PC Activity light, but the one that lets me know when I've got connection is the "ready" light on far right. I can just walk by and see if I'll have a connection or just not to bother. Its solid green, no blinking. Blinking=no connection. Power light stayed on even when connection was out. Power doesn't mean connected on mine, just that its on. Kind of lights are on but nobody's home. You may have a different modem though. Sandy
