basketweave help needed

I'm calling on those of you who've searched for tile or know of some resources. The subfloor of my tiny half-bath is cracked and the original 1929 porcelain tile can't be saved.

Men and little boys are frequent visitors to that room. I've had it with the near-constant cleaning of mostly white tile and refuse to worry about those little drops eating away at the finish of marble tiles. So I'm looking for porcelain tile where the gaps in the basketweave pattern are white, not black. Basically, the reverse of everything I've found so far.

I e-mailed American Restoration Tile; they offer what I want, but the price is insane: nearly $640 for 17 square feet (and that 17 sf doesn't include any overage for oops and breakage). That's not happening. Where else can I look?

We could produce stone mosaic tile but we would recommend you order from us if the quantity is 17sq.ft, because our factory is located in China and shipping cost would be very high for 17sq.ft, no matter they are shipped by DHL, UPS, air or ocean.

I don't know if this is what you have in mind and you have probably seen it already, but HD has 3 varieties of Merola porcelain basketweave. One of them is all white. Or are you looking for black with white dots (reverse of the usual)?

Best Tile carries porcelain basketweave, but I'm not certain about the different options. I saw the black & white version in their store last weekend (on sale, too!). They have an online store and brick and mortar locations around the country.

Hi, I think a wet saw is the only way to go. You need a continuous-rim blade (not a "turbo" blade). I used a very thin kerf blade. My saw is obsolete, and is a top-cutter, not a table saw style. The toilet flange cuts can be done with tile nippers, since they won't show. I mixed my own grout by adding some black to Delorean gray, achieving a charcoal color. I didn't feel like making the 100 mile round trip to the tile store to buy a darker gray, so I used off the shelf stuff from the Borg. Pure Delorean gray probably would have been all right, but I wanted a little more contrast, and to make it look more antiqued. Casey

It depends on how far along I was . If it was near the beginning I'd repeat the wrong row 3 or 4 times with regular pattern between them over the length of the afghan. That is if you like the look of it. Many afghans have a row of raised stitches every so often

sunshinestone: Thanks for the reply, but I'm really hoping to stay away from stone (though I know the marble basketweave is tres trendy). Also, I don't know how comfortable I am ordering from China. But thanks for the suggestion!

And northcarolina, thanks to you, too! That HD tile looks a lot like what I've got right now, but I am looking for the reverse of that (so, mostly black). The white is beautiful and very "sanitary" looking (that was the trend back in the day), but it can be a pain to keep clean. It tells too many tales.

I saw a picture on the Internet once of black pinwheel with white dots, but it was old tile in an old house. Not helpful, I know.

If you give up on the black basketweave, you could design your own mosaic at Daltile. (I haven't done it so I can't give a personal recommendation.) They don't have a basketweave blank on the website but there are a pinwheel and a few sizes of hex tile. Black hex with white rosettes might work well in your space... for that matter you might be able to find plain black hex somewhere, then make your own pattern with white hexes pulled from another sheet.

We put in Am Olean pinwheel dot and I find the glazed porcelain to be easy to clean, even in white. Your original tile might be unglazed, same as ours was. Glazed tile has a very different surface. With glazed porcelain, it's the grout that gets stained. We have light gray grout and if I were doing it again I'd get charcoal or black. Might one of the white-background basketweaves work for you if you use dark grout?
