problem with c:drive

microsoft win xp professional, local built DTop, processor x86 family 6 model 3 stepping 0 Authenic amd, 1 MB memory.

After shutting down normally last night, this morning while booting a message appeared which stated that I needed to boot from the CD drive and it gave me the choice to do so.

I used my Xp pro disc to boot from the CD and the menu that appeared listed repair which I did. I rebooted and got a desktop display. Tried to open My Computer but it would not open. Control panel would open but would not respond to any links. Nothing I did would find the C:Windows drive. I opened the computer and checked the ribbon and power connections and reseated them. Before I do anything else I wanted to check in with you guys and girls. Thanks in advance for your advice. BTW I am posting from my new computer running Win 7.
